Rapid growth processing of KDP crystals was improved by employing continuous filtration to eliminate bulk defects. The performances of the KDP crystals, including scattering defects, laser damage resistance and transmittance, were measured and analyzed. Compared with rapid-grown KDP without continuous filtration, the transmittance in the near-infrared was increased by at least 2%, almost all of ‘micron size’ defects were eliminated and ‘sub-micron size’ defects were decreased by approximately 90%. Laser damage testing revealed that the laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDTs), as well as the consistency of the LIDTs from sample to sample, were improved greatly. Moreover, it identified that ‘micron size’ defects were the precursors which initiated laser damage at relative lower laser fluence (4–6 J cm−2), and there was a lower correlation between smaller size scattering defects and laser damage initiation. The improved consistency in the LIDTs, attributed to elimination of ‘micron size’ defects, and LIDT enhancement originated from the decreased absorption of the KDP crystals.

Although there is growing interest in Red cow’s milk in Poland, to date there are few reports investigating the characteristics of milk components in the studied population. Particular emphasis on milk proteins is advised, since β-casein is a source of bioactive peptides named β-casomorphins. β-casomorphin 7, which originates mostly from β-casein variants A1, may be a significant risk factor in human ischemic heart disease, arteriosclerosis, type I diabetes, sudden infant death syndrome, and autism. The aim of the present study was to identify CSN2 polymorphism gene in exon 7 using the genomic sequence from GenBank (M55158), g.8101C>A, (codon 67). Blood samples were collected from 201 Polish Red cattle (24 males and 177 females). The genotype of β-casein was determined using PCR-ACRS. The frequency of β-casein A2 in Polish Red population was 0.47. β-casein A2 frequency in Polish Red bulls and in cows was 0.58 and 0.37, respectively.

We grew a series of co-doped LiNbO3 crystals with fixed 1.5 mol % ZrO2 and various MgO concentrations (1.0, 3.0, 4.0, 6.0 mol %), and investigated their optical properties and defect structures. By 3.0 mol % MgO co-doping, the optical damage resistance at 532 nm reached 6.5 × 106 W/cm2, while the phase-matching temperature for doubling 1064 nm was only 29.3 °C—close to room temperature—which was conducive to realizing the 90° phase matching at room temperature by slightly modulating the incident angle of the fundamental beam. Notably, we found that the phase-matching temperature increased linearly with the increase of MgO doping, and this linear dependence helped us to grow the high-quality crystal for room temperature 90° phase matching. Moreover, the defect analysis indicated that the linear tuning of phase-matching temperature might be attributed to Mg Li + + Zr Nb − neutral pairs in crystals.

Keloid scarring is a fibroproliferative disorder due to the accumulation of collagen type I. Tolfenamic acid (TA), a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, has been found to potentially affect the synthesis of collagen in rats. In this preliminary study, we aimed to test the effects of TA on cell proliferation, cell apoptosis, and the deposition of intracellular collagen in keloid fibroblasts. Normal fibroblasts (NFs) and keloid fibroblasts (KFs) were obtained from human dermis tissue. Within the dose range 10−3–10−6 M and exposure times 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h, we found that 0.55 × 10−3 M TA at 48 h exposure exhibited significantly decreased cell proliferation in both NFs and KFs. Under these experimental conditions, we demonstrated that (1) TA treatment induced a remarkable apoptotic rate in KFs compared to NFs; (2) TA treatment reduced collagen production in KFs versus NFs; (3) TA treatment decreased collagen type I expression in KFs comparing to that of NFs. In summary, our data suggest that TA decreases cell proliferation, induces cell apoptosis, and inhibits collagen accumulation in KFs.

A series of LiNbO3: Mo, Hf crystals with 0.5 mol % fixed MoO3 and various HfO2 concentrations (0.0, 2.0, and 3.5 mol %) were grown by the Czochralski technique. The photorefractive properties of the LiNbO3: Mo, Hf crystals were investigated by two-wave coupling measurements and the beam distortion method was employed to obtain the optical damage resistance ability. The UV-visible and OH− absorption spectra were also studied. The experimental results imply that the photorefractive properties of LiNbO3: Mo crystals at laser wavelengths of 532, 488, and 442 nm can be greatly enhanced by doping HfO2 over the threshold concentration. At 442 nm especially, the response time of LN: Mo, Hf3.5 can be shortened to 0.9 s with a diffraction efficiency of 46.07% and a photorefractive sensitivity reaching 6.28 cm/J. Besides this, the optical damage resistance at 532 nm is 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of the mono-doped LiNbO3: Mo crystal, which is beneficial for applying it in the field of high-intensity lasers.

Background The aim of this preliminary study is to evaluate the results of T1-weighted dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in pediatric patients at 1.5T, with a low peripheral intravenous gadoteric acid injection rate of 1 ml/s. Materials and methods Children with neurological symptoms were examined prospectively with conventional MRI and T1-weighted DCE MRI. An magnetic resonance perfusion analysis method was used to obtain time–concentration curves (persistent pattern, type-I; plateau pattern, type-II; washout pattern, type-III) and to calculate pharmacokinetic parameters. A total of two radiologists manually defined regions of interest (ROIs) in the part of the lesion exhibiting the greatest contrast enhancement and in the surrounding normal or contralateral tissue. Lesion/surrounding tissue or contralateral tissue pharmacokinetic parameter ratios were calculated. Tumors were categorized by grade (I–IV) using the World Health Organization (WHO) Grade. Mann–Whitney testing and receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves were performed. Results A total of nine boys and nine girls (mean age 10.5 years) were included. Lesions consisted of 10 brain tumors, 3 inflammatory lesions, 3 arteriovenous malformations and 2 strokes. We obtained analyzable concentration–time curves for all patients (6 type-I, 9 type-II, 3 type-III). Ktrans between tumor tissue and surrounding or contralateral tissue was significantly different ( p = 0.034). Ktrans ratios were significantly different between grade I tumors and grade IV tumors ( p = 0.027) and a Ktrans ratio value superior to 0.63 appeared to be discriminant to determine a grade IV of malignancy. Conclusions Our results confirm the feasibility of pediatric T1-weighted DCE MRI at 1.5T with a low injection rate, which could be of great value in differentiating brain tumor grades.
