Optical films have been prepared on K9 glass by electronic beam evaporation. Parameters of S-polarized Nd: YAG laser used for pretreatment and damage tests are: wavelength is 355nm, pulse width is 8ns, and incidence angle is 33.75 degree. The results reflect that: the influence of laser pretreatment on laser induced damage threshold of films is uncertain. Laser pretreatment not always improve the laser induced damage threshold of films, and sometimes it will cause negative influence. As for damage probability, for a certain testing energy density, there is an energy density scope, pretreatment pulse with energy density in which can reduce the laser induced damage probability of films. The energy density of laser pretreatment pulse should be selected according to the serving conditions of films.

2-Amino-4,6-dimethylpyrimidinium p-hydroxybenzoate (ADPHB), a novel organic material, was synthesized, and crystals were grown by slow evaporation solution growth method. The cell parameters and crystalline perfection of the grown crystal were studied by single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction analyses. The presence of various functional groups of the grown crystal was confirmed using Fourier Transform infrared spectral analysis. UV-Visible spectrum shows that ADPHB crystals have high transmittance in the range 305–900 nm. The refractive index and transient photoluminescence properties of the grown crystal were analyzed. The laser induced surface damage threshold, optical birefringence, and second harmonic generation efficiency of the grown crystal were studied.

Single crystal of organic material Methyl N- phenylsuccinamate (MPS) has been grown by the slow evaporation technique using methanol as a solvent. The crystal belongs to orthorhombic system with non centrosymmetric space group Pna21. Optical transmittance and second harmonic generation efficiency of the grown crystals have been studied by UV-vis-NIR spectrum and Kurtz powder technique respectively. The transmittance of MPS crystal has been used to calculate the refractive index (n), the extinction coefficient (k) and reflectance (R). The laser induced surface damage threshold for the grown crystal has been measured using Nd:YAG laser. The mechanical behaviour of the MPS crystal has also been analyzed.

The present measurements of the components' surface resistance to laser-induced damage has been completed to facilitate development and construction of the “Luch” laser system, a four-channel Nd-phosphate glass laser with a full output energy of E = 14–16 kJ. The study describes a method that, with a series of experimental data obtained from a single sample, allows us not only to estimate the threshold fluences, but to take into account the statistical nature of the surface damage. In a number of experimental situations this method makes it possible to estimate damaging fluences even from the result of a single exposure of the studied surface. Estimated threshold fluences for various optical elements are presented: K8 glass, experimental phosphate laser glass KGSS-0180, high-reflecting and antireflecting thin-film coating of elements. The 1.054-μm radiation pulse with half-height duration of 4 ns and the irradiation spot of ∼4 mm in diameter were used in the experiment.

An experimental investigation was carried out to study the effect of variation in Barkhausen noise (BN) analysis parameters (magnetizing voltage and excitation frequency) for assessment of microhardness profile upon surface grinding. A varying amount of surface damage was induced in the ground samples by changing the downfeed during grinding. It was observed that variation in microhardness inversely affects root mean square (rms) value of BN signal. The observed BN profile indicated no phase transformation or microstructural changes upon grinding. Metallographic study of ground samples has been undertaken to confirm the results obtained by BN analysis. Barkhausen noise parameter (rms value of BN signal), at elevated magnetizing voltage and excitation frequency, increased with reduction in microhardness along the depth indicating the applicability of BN analysis technique in assessing the microhardness profile of ground steel.
