Measuring Cochlear Implant Satisfaction in Postlingually Deafened Adults With The SADL Inventory

Background: Cochlear implants (CI) have become widely used for the management of profound sensorineural hearing loss. However, data relative to satisfaction in CI users are not so readily available. No standard outcome inventory for CI users has been developed. The Satisfaction with Amplification in Daily Life (SADL) inventory was originally developed for hearing aid users by Cox and Alexander (1999). Because the SADL inventory has been shown to have good psychometric properties for use within hearing aid users, the present study adapted the SADL for CI use and assessed the validity and reliability of the adapted version. Purpose: (1) To explore the factor structure (i.e., subscales), validity, and reliability of the SADL inventory applied to CI users and compare the resulting factor structure to that reported by Cox and Alexander (1999) for hearing aid users; and (2) to evaluate the satisfaction level of CI users as measured by the SADL inventory and compare the satisfaction level of unilateral CI users (CI-only) to that of users of a CI and hearing aid in opposite ears (CIHA). Research Design: A cross-sectional survey. All CIHA users in this study voluntarily elected to wear their hearing aids in conjunction with their CIs. Study Sample: The satisfaction level of postlingually deafened adult CI users was assessed for 100 CI-only and 35 CIHA users using the SADL inventory. Data Collection And Analysis: The psychometric properties of the adapted SADL following administration to CI-only and CIHA users were examined through a factor analysis. Results: A similar factor structure was found for CI-only users compared to the original published SADL data. The differences were primarily related to one particular factor. CI users have a moderately high satisfaction level. No significant differences were found between the CI-only and CIHA groups except for hearing aid feedback. Conclusions: It is concluded that the SADL is appropriate for clinical use with CI users.

Abstract Background Low risk pregnancy ending in a vaginal birth is best served and guided by a midwife. Utilizing a midwife in such cases offers many emotional and economic advantages and does not increase the risks for mother or neonate. However, women’s experience and satisfaction of midwife-led maternity care is rarely reported in China. The primary objective of this study is to describe the experience of Chinese women receiving midwife-led maternity care, and to report their satisfaction level of the experience. Methods The study is a cross-sectional survey of 4192 women who had natural birth from March–June 2019 in a maternity care center, Shanghai, China. We used a self-administered questionnaire addressing items related to women’s experience during childbirth, as well as their satisfaction with midwife-led maternity care. We also included demographic and perinatal characteristics of each participant. Descriptive statistics and correlations analysis between groups of different experience and satisfaction were used. Results In this sample, 87.7% of women had a Doula and a family member present during childbirth. Epidural anesthesia was used in 75.6% and episiotomy was needed in 23.2%. Free positioning during the first stage of labor and free positioning during the second stage of labor and delivery were adopted in 84.3 and 67.9% of the cases, respectively. Moderate to severe perineal pain and moderate to severe perineal edema were reported in 43.1 and 12.2% of the participants, respectively. High satisfaction level was found when there was midwife-led prenatal counseling and presence of Doula and family member, Lamaze breathing techniques, warm perineal compresses, epidural anesthesia, free positioning during the first stage of labor, and midwifes’ postpartum guidance. Negative satisfaction was seen with perineal pain and edema. Conclusion Women in this survey generally had high satisfaction with midwife-led maternity care. This satisfaction is probably felt because of the prenatal counseling by the midwife and allowing a Doula and a family member in the room during childbirth. Other intangible factors to improve the satisfaction level were Lamaze breathing techniques, warm perineal compresses, epidural anesthesia, free positioning during first stage of labor, and early skin to skin contact.

BACKGROUND Despite the increasing prevalence of hearing loss, the cost and psychological barriers to use of hearing aids may prevent individuals with hearing loss from using these aids. Hearing loss patients can benefit from smartphone-based hearing aid applications (SHAAs), which are smartphone applications that use a mobile device as sound amplifier. OBJECTIVE The aims of this study were to determine how ear, nose and throat (ENT) outpatients perceived SHAAs, analyze factors that affected this, and estimate costs of annual subscription to an application through a self-administered questionnaire survey of smartphone users and hearing specialists. METHODS The study employed cross-sectional, multi-center survey of both ENT outpatients and hearing specialists. The questionnaire was designed to collect personal information about the respondents as well as responses to 18 questions concerning SHAAs in 5 domains: knowledge, needs, cost, expectations, and information. Questions about the expected cost of SHAAs were included in the questionnaire distributed to hearing experts. RESULTS Among 219 smartphone users and 42 hearing specialists, only eight respondents (3.7%) recognized SHAAs, while 47 of 261 respondents (21.5%) reported considering using an assistive device to improve their hearing capacities. Average perception score was 2.81 (95% CI 2.65-2.97), lower than the grade point average of 3. Among factors that shaped perceptions of SHAAs, the needs category received the lowest scores (2.02, 95% CI 1.83-2.20) whereas the cost category received the highest scores (3.29, 95% CI 3.14-3.44). Age was correlated with the information domain (P = .000) and an increased level of hearing impairment resulted in significantly higher points in the needs category (P = .000). Patients expected the cost of an annual application subscription to an SHAA to be about 86 USD, and predicted cost was associated with economic status (P = .200) and was noticeably higher than the prices expected by hearing specialists (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS Outpatients expected SHAAs to cost more than hearing specialists. However, SHAA perception was relatively low. In this regard, enhanced awareness of SHAAs is required to popularize SHAAs. Background: Hearing loss in young adulthood causes real stigma and a state of denial. The crucial clinical management to sustain the hearing loss is hearing aid fitting, but most adult people reject it or do not use it. Many factors, including social, personal, and device problems, lessen the usage of hearing aid. The objective of this study was to evaluate the causative factors which can lead to the rejection of hearing aids.  Patients and methods: This was a cross-sectional survey carried out in 9 cities of Punjab, Pakistan, using a convenient sampling technique during summer 2018. A total of 171 participants were included who were young adults ranging from 19-40 years. A questionnaire with 11 factors and a further 35 sub-reasons was given to the participants. Questions were close-ended in yes or no. Data were analyzed through frequency and percentages tabulation with SPSS software. Results: Results showed that hearing aid value/speech clarity was the most problematic reason for patients to reject hearing aid. The given factor had four sub-reasons ('noisy situation,' 'poor benefit,' 'poor sound quality, and 'not suitable for the type of hearing loss). A total number n=154 (90.05%) marked yes for facing poor sound quality followed by poor benefit n=141 (82.45%), not suitable for the type of hearing loss n=121 (70.76%) and noisy situation n=118 (69.00%), thus making hearing aid value the leading cause of rejection. The second leading cause was financial factors followed by situational factors, appearance, fit and comfort, device factors, psychosocial factors, ear infections, care and maintenance, attitude, and family pressure to use a hearing aid.  Conclusion: Most prevalent cause of not taking up a hearing aid is the hearing aid value followed by financial factors, situational factors, appearance, fit, and comfort.

The goal of this cross-sectional survey research was to find the validity and reliability of assessment instrument for fiqh mu'āmalāt learning with financial literacy oriented for secondary education. To reveal validity is assessed based on obtain judgement expert and reliability measured by internal consistency. It was gained that the validity is 7 items very feasible and 5 item quite feasible with reliability’s value is 0,763. This finding shows that assessment instrument can be used to analyze difficulties of students for designing lesson plan of fiqh mu'āmalāt learning with financial literacy oriented.

Depression constitutes a major public health problem due to its high prevalence and difficulty in diagnosis. The Hopkins Symptom Checklist-25 (HSCL-25) scale has been identified as valid, reproducible, effective, and easy to use in primary care (PC). The purpose of the study was to assess the psychometric properties of the HSCL-25 and validate its Spanish version. A multicenter cross-sectional study was carried out at six PC centers in Spain. Validity and reliability were assessed against the structured Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI). Out of the 790 patients, 769 completed the HSCL-25; 738 answered all the items. Global Cronbach’s alpha was 0.92 (0.88 as calculated for the depression dimension and 0.83 for the anxiety one). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) showed one global factor and two correlated factors with a correlation of 0.84. Area under the curve (AUC) was 0.89 (CI 95%, 0.86–0.93%). For a 1.75 cutoff point, sensibility was 88.1% (CI 95%, 77.1–95.1%) and specificity was 76.7% (CI 95%, 73.3–79.8%). The Spanish version of the HSCL-25 has a high response percentage, validity, and reliability and is well-accepted by PC patients.

BACKGROUND E-mental-health applications targeting at depression and anxiety have gained increased attention in mental health care. Daily self-assessment is an essential part of e-mental-health apps. The app SELFPASS (Self-administered-Psycho-TherApy-SystemS) is a self-management app to manage depressive and anxious symptoms. A self-developed item pool with 40 depression items and 12 anxiety items is included to provide symptom specific suggestions for interventions. However, the psychometric properties of the item pool have not yet been tested. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to investigate the validity and reliability of the SELFPASS item pool that has been developed for an internet-based daily self-assessment of depressive and anxious symptoms. METHODS An online link with the SELFPASS item pool and validated mood assessment scales were distributed to healthy subjects and patients who had received a diagnosis of a depressive disorder within the last year. Two scores were derived from the SELFPASS item pool: SELFPASS depression (SP-D) and SELFPASS anxiety (SP-A). The reliability was examined using Cronbach’s α. The construct validity was assessed via Pearson correlations with the Patients Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), the General Anxiety Disorder Scale-7 (GAD-7) and the WHO-5-Wellbeing-Scale (WHO-5). A logistic regression was performed as an indicator for concurrent criterion validity of SP-D and SP-A. A factor analysis provides information about the underlying factor structure of the item pool. Item-scale-correlations were calculated in order to determine item quality. RESULTS A total of n=284 participants were included, with n=192 (67.6%) healthy subjects and n=92 (32.4%) patients. Cronbach’s α was α=0.94 for SP-D and α=0.88 for SP-A. We found significant positive correlations of SP-D and PHQ-9 (r=0.87, P<.001), SP-A and GAD-7 (r=0.80, P<.001), and negative correlations of SP-D and WHO-5 (r=-0.80, P<.001) and SP A and WHO-5 (r=-.69, P<.001). Increasing scores of SP-D and SP-A led to increased odds of belonging to the patient group (SP-D: OR=1.03 (1.01 – 1.05), P<.001; SP-A: 1.05 (1.05 – 1.01), P=.01). The item pool showed two factors with one that consisted of mood-related items and another factor with somatic-related items. CONCLUSIONS The SELFPASS item pool showed good psychometric properties in terms of reliability, construct and criterion validity. However, the underlying factor structure could not be reduced to the two diagnostic categories depression and anxiety, but to a more mood related and a rather somatic factor. Few items should be replaced for future use.

<p>Introduction: The Transgression-Related Interpersonal Motivation (TRIM-18) Inventory is an instrument that assesses episodic forgiveness. This scale is composed of three subscales: <em>avoidance</em>, <em>revenge</em> and <em>benevolence</em>. The present study examined the dimensionality of the Spanish version of the TRIM-18 (TRIM-18-S) and provided evidence of validity and reliability. Method: A total of 943 participants completed the TRIM-18-S.  A subset of 277 participants completed additional measures of empathy, anger, and information regarding the relation with the offender. Results: The TRIM-18-S showed good psychometric properties, and confirmatory factor analyses revealed a three-factor structure. Conclusions: The scale presents adequate psychometric properties for its potential use in a Spanish population.</p><p> </p>

The aim of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Mini-Cog in Iranian older adults. It was a cross-sectional study; 50 older people with dementia and 50 without dementia who matched for age, gender, and education entered the study. The diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders criteria for dementia were used as gold standard. A battery of scales included the abbreviated mental test score (AMTS), the Geriatric Depression Scale, and the Mini-Cog was performed. Validity and reliability of the Mini-Cog determined using the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient (Pearson’s r), Cronbach’s alpha, and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. The Persian version of Mini-Cog showed a good inter-rater reliability ( K = 0.76, p < .01) and a positive concurrent validity ( r = 0.39, p < .01) with the AMTS. The sensitivity and specificity were 88% and 62.8%, respectively, using the original cutoff point of 2. The findings showed that the Persian version of Mini-Cog have an acceptable sensitivity, specificity, and substantial overall agreement with the AMTS.

BACKGROUND፡ Despite the huge numbers of the universally produced and employed protocols, the adherence with them is still low to moderate in the healthcare settings. This study was employed to assess the attitudes of Palestinian healthcare professionals in Gaza Strip to health education and counseling on healthy behaviours protocol (WHO-PEN Protocol 2), for patients with non-communicable diseases in the Ministry of Health primary healthcare centers.METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted with a census sample of all governmental family physicians and nurses (n=175). The study questionnaire was developed based on Cabana theoretical framework. The Arabic version questionnaire was developed based on the cross-cultural adaptation framework. The psychometric properties of the Arabic version questionnaire was finally evaluated.RESULTS: The psychometric properties of the Arabic version questionnaire showed good construct validity and internal consistency reliability. The overall adherence level to WHO-PEN Protocol 2 was 70.0, SD=6.9. The main perceived barriers were lack of incentive, patients’ factors, and lack of time. In general, most of healthcare professional respondents had a positive attitude toward the protocol, but this attitude was not predictor to protocol adherence.CONCLUSION: The good validity and reliability of the questionnaire can provide support for the accuracy of the study results. Varied implementation strategies targeting the major barriers derived from the study are extremely required for addressing the lack of incentives, patients’ factors and time constraints.

Background: The world is experiencing a global corona virus (COVID-19) pandemic. As of 9th June 2020, over 7 million confirmed cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and more than 400,000 deaths had been reported in more than 30 countries of the world according to World Health Organization. Aim: We aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and vulnerability perception of Enugu state residents during the coronavirus outbreak in order to facilitate better health care outcomes. Methodology: A prospective Web-based cross-sectional survey was designed for this study which was conducted in March 2020 among Enugu state residents. The obtained data were coded, validated, and analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences SPSS software, version 24. Descriptive analysis was applied to calculate the frequencies and proportions and Chi-Square Test was also used. A preliminary phase was conducted to assess the validity and reliability of the questionnaire before its use.  Results: The study showed that significant number (99.6%) of the respondents had heard about Covid-19 and the most stated source of knowledge was social media (57.6%), followed by Newspaper and television shows (50.2%) while the least was from General Practitioner (GP) (8.9%). There was over 75% agreement with, and practice, of all known covid precautionary measures and less than 35% responses for wrong claims and practices about covid -19. Conclusion: The overall knowledge, attitude, and perception are high in Enugu state population although few still has background combined superstitious believes. Social media and internet are the highest used facility for acquisition of knowledge and information in Enugu, Nigeria.
