A zeolite-catalyzed, simple, one-pot, solvent-free, cost effective, and environmentally benign process for the synthesis of dihydropyrimidones is described. This reaction is scaleable to multigram scale and the catalyst is recyclable. This methodology has resulted in an efficient synthesis of monastrol, a potent inhibitor of kinesin Eg5.

Solvent-free, one-pot synthesis of polyhdroquinoline and 1,8-dioxodecahydroacridine derivatives have been described via Hantzsch condensation of various aldehydes, ammonium acetate with (<em>i</em>) cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds and ethyl acetoacetate and (<em>ii</em>) cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds (2 mmoles) in a very simple, efficient, and environmentally benign method using 1,3-(dibromo or dichloro)-5,5-dimethylhydantoin as a cheap, non-toxic and neutral catalyst with up to excellent yields.

An efficient and environmentally benign protocol for the one-pot, three-component synthesis of 12-aryl-8,9,10,12-tetrahydro-benzo[a]xanthen-11-one derivatives by condensation of aryl aldehydes, 2-naphthol and dimedone using H4SiW12O40(SiWA) as a reusable catalyst with high catalytic activity was reported. The reaction was carried out at 100 ºC under solvent-free conditions within 15-40 min in 82-91% yield.

A simple, efficient, and cost-effective method for the synthesis of a series of sugar–thiazolidinone derivatives by a one-pot reaction of the corresponding thiosemicarbazone of d-galactose, d-glucose, and d-mannose compounds in the presence of dimethyl or diethyl acetylenedicarboxylate is described. Two different methods were used and high yields were obtained in both cases: (A) in EtOAC–H2O at an ambient temperature and (B) microwave irradiation under solvent-free conditions.

Lanthanum chloride was found to be an effective catalyst for the facile and one-pot synthesis of polysubstituted imidazoles under solvent free condition in excellent yields. This method elucidates urea/thiourea, as an environmentally benign source of ammonia for the synthesis of polysubstituted imidazoles. The work-up procedure is very simple and the products don’t require further purification.
