A side-product present in the herbicide pyroxasulfone was synthesized. The construction of a bis(aryloxy)fluoromethane moiety was necessary, for which no existing method was available. We report a simple, new procedure which we applied to the synthesis of some of these unusual structures.

For each discriminant $D>1$, McMullen constructed the Prym–Teichmüller curves $W_{D}(4)$ and $W_{D}(6)$ in ${\mathcal{M}}_{3}$ and ${\mathcal{M}}_{4}$, which constitute one of the few known infinite families of geometrically primitive Teichmüller curves. In the present paper, we determine for each $D$ the number and type of orbifold points on $W_{D}(6)$. These results, together with a previous result of the two authors in the genus $3$ case and with results of Lanneau–Nguyen and Möller, complete the topological characterisation of all Prym–Teichmüller curves and determine their genus. The study of orbifold points relies on the analysis of intersections of $W_{D}(6)$ with certain families of genus $4$ curves with extra automorphisms. As a side product of this study, we give an explicit construction of such families and describe their Prym–Torelli images, which turn out to be isomorphic to certain products of elliptic curves. We also give a geometric description of the flat surfaces associated to these families and describe the asymptotics of the genus of $W_{D}(6)$ for large $D$.

The crystal structure of the title compound, C20H18N2O3, was determined in the course of our studies of the synthesis of 3-acylindole derivatives. We obtained it as an unexpected racemic side product. The crystal structure contains chains of dimers along the a axis.

The reactivity and synthesis of new analogues of pyrido[1,2-a]benzimidazoles have been explored. Twenty-three derivatives bearing phenoxy, thiophenoxy, aniline, and aryl groups at the 1-position were successfully synthesised in 25–91% yield, via nucleophilic substitution, Buchwald–Hartwig amination, and Suzuki coupling type processes. Solvent free synthetic protocols were employed to achieve the nucleophilic substitution of anilines with electron donating groups or moderately electron withdrawing groups on a sterically demanding intermediate (7a). An unusual polycyclic heterocycle was identified as a side-product during this work: a dimeric bis(pyrido[1,2-a]benzimidazole).

Building upon The Translator’s Invisibility by L. Venuti and related work by Susan Bassnett, Ovidi Carbonell, Anuradha Dingwaney, Samia Mehrez and Mahasweta Sengupta, among others, this paper argues for the visibility of the postcolonial literature translator and draws a carefull line between proper visibility – as we define it – and a counterproductive exotism that may arise as the side-product of a poorly understood visibility. Our discussion focuses on the particular case of postcolonial lusophone African literature. In particular, we analyze the translation strategy adopted by the author of this paper for the translation from portuguese to catalan of A Varanda do Frangipani, a novel by Mia Couto from Mozambique.
