Achieving a more sustainable and environmentally friendly approach, following the concepts of sustainable development and searching solutions for improving the quality of life in the context of urban agriculture requires a determination of the environmental aspects of this type of practices in the context of sustainable development. Sustainable urban agriculture combines all the characteristics of urban agriculture, implemented in the concept of sustainability. The aim of the paper is based on the assessment of the ecological impact of urban agriculture to determine its possibilities for improving the life quality in Bulgaria. The paper has the following structure: 1) Literature review of the relevant author’s findings directed at sustainable urban agriculture; 2) Methodological framework of the study; 3) Analysis of the respondents’ opinion about the ecological aspects of urban agriculture for improving the life quality; 4) General conclusions related to the ecological aspects of urban agriculture for improving the life quality. Ecological aspects of urban agriculture to improve the quality of life are revealed on the basis of the respondents’ assessments in terms of the environmental benefits of urban agriculture, the profile of the customers of the products from urban agriculture, the profile of urban agricultural products, applied practices and production methods, pollution of natural resources etc. Some of the conclusions in the paper are related to the opportunities of urban agriculture to ensure food security and food resources in an environmentally friendly manner, optimize and save the use of natural resources, implement green practices, create local employment and encourage the development of the regions. The results are part of the scientific project DN 05/18 Urban agriculture as a strategy for improving the quality of life of urban communities, funded by the Bulgarian research fund.

The paper presents the definition of quality of life and its relationship with sustainable development. The paper analyses and compares the indicators of quality of life in Lithuania with other countries. A quality of life is an explicit or implicit policy goal. Various measurements and indicators to evaluate a quality of life were proposed during the recent years however there are no widely accepted objective indicators of quality of life able to compare countries. Sustainable development concept proposes new approach to measure quality of life. Therefore the aim of sustainable development is to increase quality of life. Quality of life can be addressed in terms of people health, the state of economy, employment, infrastructure development, crime and environment. All these indicators are interrelated as economic development creates preconditions to maintain public health, develop social and technical infrastructure, to increase employment, to ensure quality of environment, to tackle with crime etc. From the other point of view healthy and satisfied with the quality of life nation have positive impact on stable economic growth.

Human capital as a national economy defining basic factor is considered in the article. The research is focused on human capital study based on regional level. The correlation between human capital and quality of life is also revealed in the study. The quality of life correlates with the model of the society and the dominating model of a human. The major importance of the qualify of life is considered within the concept of sustainable development. The observation of a trend of a human life quality improvement and, therefore, human capital enrichment is presented on a scheme below. Analysis and evaluation of a human capital of a region is provided within historical and modern aspects.

Any technology that is developed and used will have certain components or constituting mechanisms such as materials used, procedure, or technological process involved. The quality of life on planet with respect to environment such as fresh air to breathe, clean water for drinking, and other purposes are essential for all forms of life on earth. Therefore, whatever developments are undertaken should not degrade our environment. It is essential to bear in mind that whatever development, be it construction, new power plants, transportation modes, etc., should be carefully weighed in terms of its contribution to the environment, especially if there are any negative aspects that emerge from use of machinery, equipment, technologies, etc. We should analyze any technology that we use in terms of its cost-benefit study. Here in this chapter, the authors have discussed environmentally friendly technologies for our sustainability to use the natural resources wisely with some case studies of natural as well as manmade disasters.

The purpose of the article is to substantiate the methodology for determining the European quality of life index. The theoretical and methodological basis of research is the ideas of the interdependence of life quality and sustainable development. To achieve the desired goal, the following research methods were used: analysis and synthesis (for determining theoretical and practical aspects of ensuring the life quality); statistical (for determining standardized indicators and a European Quality of Life Index for Sweden and Ukraine); abstract-logical (for theoretical summarization and conclusion). As a result, the authors created the European Quality of Life Index based on the comparison of the characteristics of international life quality assessment systems (calculation principle, number and composition of indicators, number of countries covered for calculation), as well as systematization of research by Ukrainian and foreign authors. Therefore, the authors selected twelve main indicators. The indicators are divided into two groups: stimulants (prosperity index, basic human needs index, welfare bases, availability of nutrition and basic health care, GDP per capita, population, global competitiveness index, personal security, access to basic knowledge, ecosystem status) and disincentive (government debt, unemployment). To determine the “European life quality index”, the authors used the formula for calculating the arithmetic mean, as all selected indicators can be considered equivalent as a result of standardization by the method of “minimum- maximum”. In addition, for in-depth analysis, the authors calculated the growth rates of indicators, as well as coefficients of variation. The authors made calculations based on data of 2013–2019 for two countries, namely Sweden and Ukraine. Sweden occupies a much better position in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, so studying the impact of life quality on sustainable development in this country will suggest ways to achieve the chosen strategic priorities for Ukraine.

The quality of life plays a crucial role in ensuring sustainable development and improving human interaction with the environment, solving environmental problems. On the other hand, there is a tendency for the outflow of both people and their capital from peripheral regions to the centers, worsening the quality of life throughout the country. The article assesses the quality of life in the Urals and Volga regions using the center-periphery framework. The data of the regional statistics of Rosstat and the data of the RA RIA rating were used. The article uses the methods of statistical analysis, generalization, and abstraction. The stable types of regions (Center, Periphery 1, Periphery 2) were identified, the type of each region was identified. The assessment of trends in the level of monetary incomes, meat consumption, the number of tourists traveling abroad, and other life quality indicators by groups of regions. It is concluded that the division of regions according to the quality of life is stable, and the differences only increase.

The current research aims to analyse the importance of family education in improving life quality of children with special needs. Nowadays our society aim for sustainable development which means equal rights and possibilities for all the citizens but reality shows a different situation, especially it concerns children with special needs. Family education could be one of possible ways how to improve the quality of life. In the current article the author looks on family education as a solution of some problems which have children with special needs through the prism of inclusive environment and sustainable development.

The presented article indicates the direction of implementation of the strategy for sustainable development of Polish industrial enterprises. This strategy should consist in implementing an environmental management system based on eco-innovations in various areas of business activity of enterprises. Accelerating the implementation of such systems in industrial enterprises will affect the protection of natural resources, reduce degradation of the natural environment, inhibit climate change, and improve the quality of life of Polish society.

In recent years, priority for public statistics is to improve the methods of measurement and analysis of various aspects of sustainable socio-economic development. The high rank in terms of monitoring sustainable development is the measurement of life quality. The article presents the CSO’s general concept of life quality survey. It includes the previously completed research and analysis as well as proposals for the development of this research issues for the coming years. Adopted by the CSO concept of measuring the life quality refers both to the Polish tradition of research in this area, as well as international recommendations. This concept takes into account the multifaceted nature of the category of life quality and increasing importance of subjective measures. It was considered that in the measurement of quality of life CSO will seek to take into account the widest possible range of information on all domains adopted by the European Statistical System, including the Polish specifics.

The article is devoted to assessment of quantitative and qualitative human capital reproduction in energy-efficient economy provided by research of correlation between dynamics of energy consumption and transformation of life quality. The purpose of the research is to assess the role of energy-efficient economy in shaping of the conditions for human capital reproduction as a way of investment into its qualitative development. To achieve this purpose transformation of traditional spheres of sustainable development together with the implementation of the energy-efficient economy approaches in terms of maintaining of quality of human capital are considered. We conduct a study comparing several dependencies: development of productive powers - increasing requirements for the quality of human capital; ensuring effective reproduction - improving the quality of life, improving the quality of life associated with the economic system; GDP – energy consumption; GDP - CO2 emissions. The object of the study is dynamics of indicators characterizing the above dependencies, a number of the countries – members of the OECD – having an expanded human capital reproduction. Examined countries demonstrate correlation between energy efficiency of economy and quality of human capital with rather a wide variability of chosen indicators. Results of the research may become a base for forecast of development of studied indicators and their factors.

Given the importance of sustainable urban development and quality of life, the problem of informal settlements is now entering a new phase of research and social capital, as an important aspect of the quality of life in such settlements, is being widely explored. Aiming at realizing sustainable development and recovering liveliness in these settlements, the present study seeks to compile social capital factors of the quality of life in informal settlements. The methodology is descriptive-analytical and the indicators are determined by means of logical argumentation. According to the findings, outstanding indicators of the quality of life in informal settlements turn out to be trust, norm-orientation, as well as network connections in direct evaluation and participation, attitude of voluntariness, social cohesion, sense of security, informal social relations, as well as adherence to values in indirect evaluation. If investigated and improved, these indicators will play a major role in sustainable development
