Taxpayer non-compliance can cause disruption to State finances. One of the ways of non-compliance is done by means of tax avoidance. The objectives of this study are as follows: 1) To find empirical evidence regarding the effect of independent boards of commissioners on tax avoidance; 2) Finding empirical evidence regarding the effect of the audit committee on tax avoidance; 3) Finding empirical evidence regarding the effect of audit quality on tax avoidance; 4) Finding empirical evidence regarding the effect of disclosure of corporate social responsibility on tax avoidance; 5) Finding empirical evidence regarding the extent to which firm size can moderate the relationship between independent boards of commissioners and tax avoidance; 6) Finding empirical evidence regarding the extent to which firm size can moderate the relationship between the audit committee and tax avoidance; 7) Finding empirical evidence regarding the extent to which firm size can moderate the relationship between audit quality and tax avoidance; and 8) Finding empirical evidence regarding the extent to which firm size can moderate the relationship between disclosure of corporate social responsibility and tax avoidance. This type of research used in this research is casual associative research (causal associative research). The population in this study were all manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange for the 2015-2019 period. The sample selection was done by using purposive sampling method. The analytical method used to test the hypothesis is Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA). The results showed that: 1) The independent board variable has no effect on tax avoidance in a positive direction; 2) The audit committee variable has no effect on tax avoidance in a negative direction; 3) The audit quality variable has no effect on tax avoidance in a negative direction; 4) The variable of corporate social responsibility disclosure has a negative effect on tax avoidance; 5) The size of the company is able to moderate the relationship between the independent board of commissioners and tax avoidance in a negative direction; 6) The size of the company is unable to moderate the relationship between the audit committee and tax avoidance in a negative direction; 7) The size of the company is not able to moderate the relationship between audit quality and tax avoidance in a positive direction; and 8) Company size is able to moderate the relationship between disclosure of corporate social responsibility and tax avoidance in a negative direction.

Purpose This paper aims to examine the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and tax avoidance as well as how CSR and country-level governance interplay in affecting tax avoidance in an international setting. Design/methodology/approach This paper is an empirical work using listed companies from 35 countries and relying on several proxies for corporate tax avoidance activities including the difference between the statutory tax rate and the annual effective tax rate, the book-tax difference and the residual book-tax difference. Findings This study finds strong evidence that CSR is positively related to tax avoidance. It also finds that in countries with weak country-level governance, firms with higher CSR scores engage in less tax avoidance, implying that CSR and country-level governance are substitutes. Originality/value This paper is the first study that examines the relationship between CSR and tax avoidance in an international setting with different legal and institutional environment.

Outside of direct ownership, the general public may feel it is an implicit stakeholder of a firm. As the public becomes more vested in a firm’s actions, the firm may be more likely to engage in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities. We proxy for the public’s stake in a firm with public visibility. Based on 3400 unique newspaper publications from 1994–2008, we measure visibility for the S&P 500 firms with the frequency of print articles per year concerning the firm. We find that visibility has a signficant, positive relationship with the CSR rating. Evidence also suggests this relationship may be causal and working in one direction, from visibility to CSR. While the existing literature provides other factors that influence CSR, visibility proves to have the most significant impact when tested alongside those other factors. Visibility also has a mediating effect on the relationship between CSR rating and firm size. CSR rating and firm size relate negatively for the lowest visibility firms and positively for the highest. This paper provides strong evidence that visibility is an important factor to consider for studies on corporate social performance.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of corporate governance in the relationship of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and firm size to earnings management of manufacturing firms in Indonesia. Main Findings: The finding showed that the effect of CSR on earnings management was significant and positive. The study also finds a statistically significant negative relationship between firm size and earnings management. The evidence also shows the role of corporate governance in the relationship of CSR and firm size to earnings management is significant and negative, it means that when the firm has good corporate governance, the firms that allocate CSR funds are relatively large, then it will tend not to practice earnings management, likewise large firms with good corporate governance will tend not to do earnings management. Research limitations/implications: The present study does not include all possible other variables that influence earnings management. Further research might increase the scope of research objects by extending the study period and need to pay attention to the firm's macro factors or economic risk factors outside of financial performance so as to provide a more comprehensive picture of the results of the study. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the effect of tax avoidance on corporate social responsibility performance. It also investigates whether audit quality affects tax avoidance practices by socially responsible performance. Design/methodology/approach Based on a sample of French non-financial companies over the period 2005 to 2016, this paper uses panel data regressions. The authors apply generalized least square panel regression to overcome autocorrelation and heteroscedasticity problems. For further robustness, this paper runs instrumental variable regressions using the three-stage instrument variable method (three-stage least square). Findings The results show that firms with high CSR scores are more likely to engage in aggressive tax avoidance. The findings also show that firms audited by high-quality auditors are more likely to get involved in CSR for hedging against the potential consequences of aggressive tax avoidance practices. Research limitations/implications The findings are consistent with risk management theory, which suggests that firm’s hedge against any reputational risks that might arise from avoiding taxes by engaging more in CSR. Practical implications Results have implications for policymakers in that CSR firms audited by high-quality auditors may engage in CSR to overcome any negative reactions that could be caused as a result of tax avoidance. Thus, they need to be cautious about managers’ opportunistic behavior and enhance monitoring to enforce social compliance and to be tax compliant. Originality/value This paper extends the existing literature by examining the effect of audit quality on the relationship between CSR performance and corporate tax avoidance. Audit quality is deemed to be an important governance feature that is likely to constraint managerial opportunistic behaviors. Audit quality, along with CSR performance, are associated with a higher level of tax avoidance.
