Purpose/Thesis: The recent decision to join three previously separate disciplines – library and information science, media studies, and cognition and social communication science, into a single discipline of social communication and media sciences prompted the author to investigate if joining of these disciplines according to the compulsory categorization published by the OECD, is supported by an overlap in their fields of research, or by a similarity in their methods of conducting it.Approach/Methods: An analysis of the review articles devoted to the research fields of all three disciplines, and of the information regarding the research interests of the journals affiliated with them, as published on the journals’ websites, allowed the author to establish their thematic scope. The results of this analysis were compared with bibliographic data and sets of keywords found in the affiliated journals. The comparison relied on an analysis of citations, and of coexistence of specialized terms.Results and conclusions: The analysis of the review articles suggested that the basic research fields of library and information science and of the media studies and cognition and social communication science are aligned and complement each other. This conclusion was further supported by the analysis of the guidelines for the potential contributors provided on the websites of the investigated journals. However, the analysis of the bibliographic data and of the keyword sets gave an entirely different idea of the relation between the studied disciplines, indicating that there is no significant thematic overlap between them. Nevertheless, this might be due to the quality of this particular data sample, and to the methods’ susceptibility to data disruption.Originality/Value: The article proves that there is an overlap between library and information science, and the social communication and media sciences. Furthermore, it shows the limits of the citation method and of the specialized terms coexistence method, resulting from the practices of the authors and the editorial teams of some of the journals discussed. The article shows that all quantitative studies of the state of scholarship in a given discipline in Poland must be conducted with great care, and their results should not be the only basis for conclusions.

This article offers an analysis of the development of three hearing and communication apps, drawing on interviews with people involved in their production. While a central figure in the media studies literature on apps is the self-managing individual health consumer, this article argues that physical and social environments and relationships within them are central to the way the hearing apps are produced, circulated and used. Often emerging from commercial start-ups, hearing apps become aligned with – or indeed stand in for – various kinds of governmental initiatives, not only in health but also in education and economic development. Partnerships between government, research and commercial organisations and the need to work through app intermediaries to find their end users shaped the way apps create recognisable ‘problems’ to address. This problematising function of apps and its impact on the uptake and use of apps are the key areas for future research.

The library and information science field attempts to legitimize its position in higher education, in a ‘culture of uncertainty’, where boundaries are fluid. The position of LIS in the hierarchical classification of academic subjects is influenced by the changes in both the field of higher education and in the information environment, creating expectations for the emergence of new fields of study, research and professional practices. The purpose of this paper is to examine how LIS students position themselves in their field of study and the resources they use in processes of meaning-making. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with students from the three LIS departments operating in Greece at the undergraduate level. The results showed that the academic knowledge content of the object, the assignment of scientific characteristics to it, the signifier of the book, the form of professional practice and, above all, technology are the most prominent resources among those that most young people utilized in their effort to negotiate the symbolic class (i.e. the dominant cultural categories which give meaning to the social world).

It is suggested that the knowledge organization (KO) field places greater emphasis on basic research that examines the sociology of KO systems (KOS) and the broader, environmental reasons for the development of both formal and informal KOS. This approach is contrasted with applied KO, which focuses on the practical construction or improvement of specific KOS. The preponderance of applied research in the field of KO is confirmed, at least within the document-centric strand more closely aligned with library and information science, through a survey of articles in the Knowledge Organization journal published between 2009 and 2018. The survey utilized the Frascati Manual definitions for basic and applied research, and referenced Tennis’s classification of KO research (2008). There is considerable potential for building on the critical tradition of KO, with various areas ripe for further sociological investigation. A sociology of KOS could also be accommodated in the popular KO approach of domain analysis.


The past decades have seen an explosion of research into the psychological, cognitive, neural, biological, and technical mechanisms of voice perception. These mechanisms refer to the general ability to extract information from voices expressed by other living beings or by technical systems. Voice perception research is now a lively area of research, which is studied from many different perspectives ranging from basic research on the acoustic analysis of vocalizations and the neural and cognitive mechanisms, to comparative research across ages, species, and cultures, up to applied research in the field of machine-based generation and decoding of voices, telecommunication, psychiatry, and neurology. This handbook provides a comprehensive and authoritative overview on all the major research fields related to voice perception, in an accessible form, for a broad readership of students, scholars, and researchers. The handbook is divided into seven major parts, each of which deals with a central perspective on voice perception, including what makes the voice special compared to other acoustic signals, the evolutionary and ontogenetic conditions of voice perception, the social cues extracted from voice signals, the machine-based recognition of voices, and the clinical disorders that affect voice perception.

Objective: This bibliometric study investigated literature pertaining to a quickly growing population worldwide: the oldest-old, individuals age eighty-five and older. The current state of research was surveyed, based on top authors, publishers, authorship networks, themes in publication titles and abstracts, and highly cited publications.Methods: Bibliographic data was abstracted from the Web of Science database. Microsoft Excel was used for data analyses related to top author, publishers, and terms. VosViewer bibliographic visualization software was used to identify authorship networks.Results: Publications pertaining to the oldest-old have increased dramatically over the past three decades. The majority of these publications are related to medical or genetics topics. Citations for these publications remain relatively low but may be expected to grow in coming years, based on the publication behavior about and increasing prominence of this population. Claudio Franceschi and the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society were found to be the author and journal with the most publications pertaining to the oldest-old, respectively.Conclusions: The oldest-old is a population of rapidly growing significance. Researchers in library and information science, gerontology, and beyond can benefit themselves and those they serve by participating in research and specialized services to marginalized populations like the oldest-old. This bibliometric study hopefully serves as a launch-point for further inquiry and research in the years to come.

Library and information science education is one major concerns of the higher education institution as support to the teaching learning process. The study seeks to determine the relationship between the social dimensions of librarians’ education and the role performance of librarians of academic libraries. The social dimensions of librarians’ education consist of intercultural communication, cultural changes, social institutions and globalization. The role performance of librarians includes librarians as instructional partners, information specialists, program administrators and teachers. Using descriptive-correlational method, validated questionnaires, mean and Pearson (r), it can be concluded that the level of social dimensions of education of librarians in Davao City is moderate; the level of the role performance of librarians in Davao City is high and there was a significant relationship between the social dimensions of education and the role performance of librarians. Recommendations include a proposal for the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to design a program to enrich librarians’ social dimensions and competencies that comply with the global educational standards and address current needs and their future library user aspirations, considering individual and cultural contexts and present-day technologies.Keywords: library and information science education, social dimensions of education,librarians, descriptive-correlational technique, Davao City, Philippines

Purpose Bibliometrics is one of the research fields in library and information science that deals with the analysis of academic entities. In this regard, to gauge the productivity and popularity of authors, publication counts and citation counts are common bibliometric measures. Similarly, the significance of a journal is measured using another bibliometric measure, impact factor. However, scarce attention has been paid to find the impact and productivity of conferences using these bibliometric measures. Moreover, the application of the existing techniques rarely finds the impact of conferences in a distinctive manner. The purpose of this paper is to propose and compare the DS-index with existing bibliometric indices, such as h-index, g-index and R-index, to study and rank conferences distinctively based on their significance. Design/methodology/approach The DS-index is applied to the self-developed large DBLP data set having publication data over 50 years covering more than 10,000 conferences. Findings The empirical results of the proposed index are compared with the existing indices using the standard performance evaluation measures. The results confirm that the DS-index performs better than other indices in ranking the conferences in a distinctive manner. Originality/value Scarce attention is paid to rank conferences in distinctive manner using bibliometric measures. In addition, exploiting the DS-index to assign unique ranks to the different conferences makes this research work novel.
