The present contribution is aimed at offering evidence of the impact of antiCOVID government actions on trade. Using monthly Eurostat data, it investigates the relationship between the turnover of sales and the adoption of governmental measures. Explanatory variables encompass three indexes measuring the government response, namely, a stringency, a health containment and an economic support index. A consumer confidence index is used as control variable. It has been estimated through a generalised least squares model with heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation. The results outline that the percentage change of the index of deflated turnover of retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco is positively correlated with consumer confidence and negatively correlated with restrictive governmental measures. It is also determined that the percentage change of the index of deflated turnover of retail sale via internet is positively correlated with stringency governmental measures, this confirms the growing importance of internet as channel for trade.

The growth of an emerging capital market is necessary and requires all available resources and inputs from various sources to realize this objective. Several debates on government bonds’ contribution to Nigeria’s capital market developmental growth have ensued but have not triggered comprehensive studies in this area. The present research work seeks to close the breach by probing the impact of government bonds on developing the capital market in Nigeria from 2003–2019. We employ total market capitalization as the response variable to proxy the capital market, while various government bonds serve as the independent variables. The inflation rate moderates the predictor components. The research uses multiple regression technique to assess the explanatory variables’ impact on the total market capitalization. At the same time, diagnostic tests help guarantee the normality of the regression model’s data distribution and appropriateness. The findings reveal that the Federal Government of Nigeria’s (FGN) bond is statistically significant and positive in influencing Nigeria’s capital market growth. The other predictor variables are not found significant in this study. The study suggests that the Government should improve on the government bonds’ coupon, while still upholding the none default norm in paying interest and refunding principal to investors when due.

This study aims to examine the impact of human capital on economic growth in Nigeria. Despite all effort to improve education condition in Nigeria, there hasn’t been much encouraging improvement. This has caused a large number of the population to move abroad for studies. Most conducive tertiary institutions are owned by private individuals, the government owned universities have been overlooked and recklessly abandoned. In this study OLS multiple regression was adopted to analyze the time series data for the period of 1985-2018 to test if Average Year of Schooling (AVYS), Private Investment in Telecommunication (PIT), Capital Expenditure on Education (CEE), and Recurrent Expenditure on Education (REE) have an impact on growth in Nigeria or not. The data was derived from CBN statistical Bulletin (2018). Result showed that all the four explanatory variables have significant impact on Economic growth. However, it is therefore important for government to increase education budget annually.

AbstractThe mechanisms by which the world economic crisis has been transmitted from developed to developing economies are conditioned by domestic factors that may attenuate or accentuate external economic shocks and their adverse social effects. Cuba is a special case: it is an open economy and hence vulnerable to trade-growth transmission mechanisms, but at the same time, it is a socialist economy with universal social services. This article reviews the literature, summarises Cuba's domestic socio-economic strengths and weaknesses prior to the crisis, evaluates the effects of the crisis on the macro-economic and social services indicators, assesses the government response and suggests alternative socio-economic policies.

Purpose Among the digital age players, one of the fastest-growing digital channels is social media. In the past few years, developing nations’ government entities and political parties started using social media platforms to broadcast important information regarding decisions made at the state level. Pakistan is among those countries. Therefore, this study aims to empirically investigate the impact of the government agency’s provision of quality information on social media in establishing trust among citizens of Pakistan in a government agency with an underlying mechanism of citizens’ perception about agency’s transparency and responsiveness along with moderating role of perceived government response on COVID-19. Design/methodology/approach Data was collected from 542 social media followers of the Associated Press of Pakistan (a government news agency) and was analysed using measurement and structural models by using SmartPLS 3.3.0. Findings Results revealed that the interactive effect of government response on COVID-19 and government agency’s provision of quality information on social media strengthens the association of government presence on social media with citizens’ perception of the agency’s transparency and responsiveness and their trust in the agency. Practical implications Furthermore, the current study will contribute to the body of knowledge regarding the government agency’s use of information and communication technology and the government’s resultant response on COVID-19. Originality/value An extensive study of the literature revealed a gap available regarding the mediatory role of the citizens’ perception about agency’s transparency and responsiveness in between the association of government agency’s provision of quality information on social media and citizens’ trust in the government agency. Also, to the best of the author’s knowledge, no study to date has investigated the moderating role of government response on COVID-19 in between the relationship of government agency’s provision of quality on social media and citizens’ trust in the government agency and their perception about agency’s transparency and responsiveness. Thus, the current study aimed to address these existing gaps in the literature.

Purpose. The aim of this enquiry is to determine the impact of various geographical factors on the rating and popularity of hotels in selected social media. Method. Research was conducted for all 193 star-ranked hotels operating in July 2017, in central Poland. However, analysis covered only those establishments which used all considered online review sources (118 star-ranked hotels). The criteria for the selection of social media were their popularity and the ability to rate the hotel by the guests. The analysed social media channels include: Booking.com, GoogleMaps, Facebook, TripAdvisor and Trivago. To achieve the research objective, 15 semi-logarithmic models were estimated to explain the variability of: 1) number of hotel reviews posted on social media sites, 2) average hotel ratings in social media, and 3) multiplied effect of quantity and average value of online hotel ratings; separately for each type of analysed social media. The following geographical explanatory variables were considered: 1) type of location (urban or rural), 2) distance from closest transport modes (road, rail and air), 3) distance to the nearest tourist attractions, 4) distance from the closest administrative centre, 5) distance from the nearest competing hotels. The hotel star-rank was a control variable included in the study. Findings. Among the analysed explanatory variables, the most important geographical factor conditioning the number of hotel service quality assessments in central Poland on social media sties was communication accessibility, and then, the closeness of competing hotels. Regardless of the type of social media, no significant influence of practically any of the analysed geographical determinants on the average value of ratings in social media was identified. Research and conclusions limitations: The models explained the observed variability of variables, finding hotel ratings in social media to be at an insignificant level, between 8% and 33%. Practical implications. Social media management is currently one of the key areas of marketing communication run by hotel enterprises. This article should make those who are responsible for managing social media in business practice more focused on geographical context. Originality. The article is the first known attempt to the authors to assess geographical factors affecting the rating and popularity of hotels in social media. Type of paper. The article presents findings from empirical research.

China’s communication and cultural industry is an emerging industry at the primary stage of its development. Nowadays, the public’s increasing demand for cultural products, coupled with the strong support from the state and the government for the communication and cultural industry, have provided huge room for the development of this industry. However, some listed companies in the communication and cultural industry have not kept up with the constantly changing market and have not invested heavily in R&D and technological innovation, resulting in widespread product homogeneity and poor corporate performance. This paper empirically tests the impact of technological innovation on corporate performance of 56 listed companies from 2007 to 2016 in the communication and cultural industry. Along with variables that proxy technological innovation, variables that proxy solvency, profitability, operational capability, development capability, social responsibility, and shareholder indicators are included in the regression as explanatory variables. Empirical results show that technological innovation has a positive impact on the corporate performance of listed companies in the communication and cultural industry.
