The human visual system can reliably identify trends in datasets using various channels of visualization. The success story of visualization in accomplishing core analytical tasks has made it a mainstay in various domains, including the Geographic Information Science (GIS). The core analytical tasks are data exploration, decision making, and predictive analysis. Geospatio-temporal data is ubiquitous, and as the data grows in complexity and size; analytical tasks become more complex too. In the times of geospatial big data, geovisual analytics has begun to gain traction. In this paper, we give a brief overview of geovisualizations, discuss geovisual analytics through a case study, and list out some of the persistent challenges in geovisual representation and analysis.

Reading as a habit is very addictive and we have seen our fathers and grandfathers read newspapers from our childhood. It has been a part and parcel of a morning ritual and is believed in the Indian culture that whatever news is published in the Indian print media is 100% true. That was the belief until recent times and is slowly fading away. The trust and the faith which was prevalent in newspapers in the good old days is losing its shine and glitter. The Times of India as an organization has transformed itself from being a traditional newspaper to an Infotainment paper that is a combination of Information and Entertainment. Advertising revenues are the key focus of the entire sales team in the organization, and sales teams are striving to come up with innovative and customized solutions for the advertisers. Times Ascent is one of the few examples of innovation and customized solutions for its recruitment set of advertisers and the story of its gala launch until its decline is at the core of this case study. Has Times Ascent reached its final stage of the product life cycle? Can anything be done to revive it? Time shall tell how the story of Times Ascent unfolds.

This presentation combines and applies principles from both political science and geographic information science in order to gain unique insights into electoral politics and voter turnout in the United States. Missouri is used as a case-study because it has a longstanding history as a political bellwether due to its unique position straddling the historic North/South and the contemporary East/West divide; in addition its socioeconomic background closely mirrors national averages. Since the United States leaves the method of voting a responsibility of the counties, there is a discrepancy in the types of technologies used. This can result in some electorates being more prone to faulty machinery, which in turn leads to errors at the ballot box. In order to effectively answer the question- what was the effect that varying voting methods had on the turnout in Missouri during the 2004 Presidential election? - a multi-disciplinary approach must be taken which applies both a qualitative background to provide context and a strong quantitative element to provide hard empirical results. In order to address the quantitative element, due to the spatial nature of the data being used, regular statistical analysis is not possible without inviting inherent errors. Instead a variety of spatial statistics will be used to help address the hypothesis that counties which have lower voter turnouts will have less reliable methods of voting.

Abstract In this chapter, we review and summarize the current state of the art in geovisualization and extended reality (i.e., virtual, augmented and mixed reality), covering a wide range of approaches to these subjects in domains that are related to geographic information science. We introduce the relationship between geovisualization, extended reality and Digital Earth, provide some fundamental definitions of related terms, and discuss the introduced topics from a human-centric perspective. We describe related research areas including geovisual analytics and movement visualization, both of which have attracted wide interest from multidisciplinary communities in recent years. The last few sections describe the current progress in the use of immersive technologies and introduce the spectrum of terminology on virtual, augmented and mixed reality, as well as proposed research concepts in geographic information science and beyond. We finish with an overview of “dashboards”, which are used in visual analytics as well as in various immersive technologies. We believe the chapter covers important aspects of visualizing and interacting with current and future Digital Earth applications.

By considering public safety as a relevant component of a smart city framework, the development and use of city dashboards that explore the spatio-temporal monitoring of crime incidence to help local governments base their decision-making process on evidence is becoming more relevant. This research deals with the case study of the state of Aguascalientes, Mexico, whose capital hosts the annual San Marcos Fair, considered the most important fair in the country. By developing an online dynamic platform consisting of several different modules that rely on the use of geovisual analytics for dynamic and interactive data display and exploration, authorities can gain insights about the times and locations of the impact of criminal incidence, detect patterns over space and time, and look into what actions could be put in place. This becomes useful in advancing a circular model of the smart city in which urban processes are observed, data is collected and analyzed, management and decision actions occur, and more data is collected to measure their effectiveness. By comparing statistics for the three year period of 2016–2018, it is found that the second year of the study had a significant decrease in pedestrian crime incidence during the Fair, supporting the use of city dashboards with geovisual analytics to help monitor urban processes and aid authorities in making decisions. Further research is needed to uncover more efficient practices to achieve inter-institutional collaboration and data sharing schemes that adhere to and boost the principles of the smart city.

I propose that the notion of possession adds an important ideological nuance to the analyses of iconic books set forth by Martin Marty (1980) and, more recently, by James Watts (2006). Using the early second century BCE book of Sirach as a case study, I tease out some of the symbolic dynamics through which the Bible achieved iconic status in the first place, that is, the conditions in which significance was attached to its material, finite shape. For Ben Sira, this symbolism was deeply tied to his honor-shame ethos in which women posed a threat to the honor of his eternal name, a threat resolved through his possession of Torah figured as the Woman Wisdom. What my analysis suggests is that the conflicted perceptions of gender in Ben Sira’s text is fundamental to his appropriation of, and attempt to produce, authoritative religious literature, and thus essential for understanding his relationship to this emerging canon. Torah, conceived as female, was the core of this canon, but Ben Sira adds his own literary production to this female “body” (or feminized corpus, if you will), becoming the voice of both through the experience of perfect possession.
