This paper presents and discusses the application of a novel energy balance scheme for assessing energy efficiency in wastewater systems. The energy balance is demonstrated with a Portuguese real-life case study, using mathematical modelling to estimate the different energy components and to compute two energy efficiency indices. The total inflow intrinsic energy can represent a significant amount (>95%) of the total energy used in systems mainly composed of gravity sewers. The total input energy is significantly (four-times) higher in the wet season than in the dry season, mostly due to undue inflows (e.g., direct rainfall and infiltration). The potential for energy recovery strongly depends on the available head and flow rate at the delivery point, being 0.01 kWh/m3 in the current case, with a project payback period of 4 years. The energy balance components and the respective energy efficiency indices strongly depend on the considered reference elevation. Thus, a unique regional reference elevation is recommended in the calculations.

A study of the energy efficiency of the fuel and energy complex of the regions has a great attention. For an integrated introduction of trends and patterns in the energy sector, approaches we use based on the analysis of the fuel and energy balance (FEB). The function of FEB is to show the availability and use of energy resources in a certain territory and determination of indices of energy efficiency. The article presents an approach to the formation of fuel and energy balances based on the available statistical information.

ABSTRACT: The aim of the present study is to evaluate the energy balance and energy efficiency of the silage maize crop in the Center for Research, Development and Technology Transfer of the Universidade Federal de Lavras (CDTT-UFLA). The crop was irrigated by center pivot and the stages of maize cultivation and energy inputs were monitored for the 1st and 2nd crops of the 2014/2015 harvest. Results from the energy analysis showed the crop had a total energy input of 45,643.85 MJ ha-1 and 47,303.60 MJ ha-1 for the 1st and 2nd crops and a significant predominance of direct energy type (about 92% of the matrix). Regarding direct energy inputs, the diesel oil was the most representative, contributing with approximately 38% of the total energy demand. Conversely, the irrigation system contribute with 3.92% e 5.97% in the 1st and 2nd crops, representing the largest indirect energy input. Nevertheless, irrigation and crop management allowed the system achieving high levels of productivity, resulting in an energy efficiency of 25.1 and 28.1 for the first and second crops respectively.

In this study, the idea of an energy self-sufficient public utility building was presented, as well as its energy balance components and the possibility of powering it with renewable sources. The annual energy consumption profile of the building was analyzed. Current data concerning the production of electricity from Renewable Energy Systems (RES) were presented. The applicable provisions of the Directive of the European Parliament and the EU Council on energy efficiency were discussed.

In this paper we deal with active control of shock in a collision problem between two objects. In order to make it clear how the deformation of the shock-receiving object can be maximized while minimizing the deformation of the shock-giving object and how energy can be transmitted unilaterally, the relationships among contact stiffness, deformation time, deformation ratio and energy balance are discussed. The final-state control is applied to obtain a feedforward input to deform the shock-receiving object by a desired amount in a predetermined time. Thus, the energy balance and the energy efficiency are verified. Furthermore we examine the conditions necessary to realize a ‘dynamical diode’ that can transmit energy unilaterally from the shock-giving object to the shock-receiving object. It is demonstrated experimentally that the appropriate feedforward input can be obtained by final-state control under specified conditions of contact stiffness and deformation time.
