In order to manufacture a workpiece fulfilling specified requirements with the lowest possible weight, it is crucial to be able to work with a variety of materials and to combine them accordingly. The production of profiles based on hybrid materials demonstrates such an approach. The continuous and selective reinforcement of aluminum profiles with metallic elements like steel wire and steel wire ropes by composite extrusion is being investigated within the scope of research of the Transregional Collaborative Research Center (SFB/TR10). A stable production process for composite profiles with embedded continuous reinforcing elements was developed during the research work. In this paper, the process principle is shown and an overview of the special tools is given. Furthermore, the temperature and the strand speed as influencing factors on the final state of the composite are analyzed, based on real size experiments using a 2.5MN and a 10 MN extrusion press.

Modulus of elasticity of steel wire rope (elastic modulus) is a characteristic value, which is important not only for users of the steel rope, but also for designers of machines and machinery that are equipped with the steel wire rope. Values of the elastic modulus depends predominately on the elastic modulus of the material, which the rope is manufactured from as well as it depends on the various other factors. The most important influencing factors are as follows: rope construction, type of core, angle and way of wire stranding, angle and way of rope lay as well as kind of lubricant. The real value of the elastic modulus has also impact on prolongation of the steel wire rope and on intensity of its dynamical loading. The rope elastic modulus value can be determined by means of the various methods. There are analysed in this article such methods for determination of the rope elastic modulus, which can be applied for a computer simulation.

Ropes, including steel wire ropes, are the essential component of the kinematic chains in many passenger and cargo transport systems. Their condition also determines the level of operational safety of those devices. The article is devoted to discussion of methods of assessing the condition of steel wire ropes. The paper discusses magnetic and visual methods. Both methods are used obligatorily to assess ropes employed in rope transport systems. The most significant advantages of the magnetic method and the capabilities of modern methods of analysis of signals obtained from such studies are described. An important part of this article is showing how to determine the geometrical parameters of ropes during a routine evaluation of the degree of wear. The second part of the article presents new methods of determining and recording the geometrical parameters of ropes based on vision systems. The original method of determination of those parameters described herein is complementary to the currently used methods of assessment of the wear of both steel wire ropes and the increasingly more common synthetic fibre ropes. The method is based on the analysis of vision signals. Images of rope surface are created using 3D technology. The article presents some results of research based on which it is possible to identify the geometric dimensions of ropes as well as defects on the surface of those ropes. Such identification is possible on a digital image of a projection of rope surface.

Abstract This four-part series of papers addresses the problem of systematic determination of the influence of several tire factors on tire treadwear. Both the main effect of each factor and some of their interactive effects are included. The program was also structured to evaluate the influence of some external-to-tire conditions on the relationship of tire factors to treadwear. Part I describes the experimental design used to evaluate the effects on treadwear of generic tire type, aspect ratio, tread pattern (groove or void level), type of pattern (straight rib or block), and tread compound. Construction procedures and precautions used to obtain a valid and functional test method are included. Two guiding principles to be used in the data analyses of Parts II and III are discussed. These are the fractional groove and void concept, to characterize tread pattern geometry, and a demonstration of the equivalence of wear rate for identical compounds on whole tread or multi-section tread tires.
