This chapter provides an overview of the genesis and development of the digital preservation capability maturity model (DPCMM) which covers a range of governance, operational, and data management functions associated with the management of long-term (10+ years) and permanent digital assets. The model is organized into three domains: infrastructure, repository, and services. In addition to providing a useful framework for analysis and planning among archivists, content owners and records managers, using a capability maturity model (CMM) to convey the requirements associated with preservation and access to long-term digital assets provides a familiar construct for information technology (IT) architects and system administrators. Each of the 15 DPCMM components has five incremental stages of capability called digital preservation performance metrics.

This study describes a conceptual approach to greening and sustainability through Information Technology management. The authors reviewed existing research and publications on the topic of greening, and concluded that while much has been written about ways to go green, much less are available on guidelines to help gauge the degree of greening efforts. To help alleviate this shortcoming, the authors propose a model–called the Greening through Information Technology Model (GITM)–based on the framework of Capability Maturity Model. The authors are currently in the process of developing questions to be used for each aspect of the greening management to determine the GITM level that an organization is in.

Recently much has been written about sustainability and greening and the issue is likely to continue to resurface on the agendas of decision makers. This paper addresses one aspect of the topic: that of sustainability and greening through information technology management. The authors review existing research and publications on the topic and conclude that while much research is available on methods of enhancing sustainability and greening, less exists on guidelines to help gauge success or failure of these methods. To help alleviate this shortcoming, the authors propose a model – called the Greening through Information Technology Model (GITM) – based on the framework of Capability Maturity Model.
