Teachers are well aware of the fact that the pupil who can repeat the definition of a word may not really understand what that word means. Since understanding of technical terms in a subject like mathematics is essential, it is important for the teacher to determine whether the pupil has really mastered basic words. In one of a series of studies, the writer sought to construct a test which would determine how well pupils understand the word function, a term generally considered basic in work in advanced high school algebra and college mathematics. While attempting to build the test, it was found that teachers often did not agree as to whether a given expression should be called a function; this suggested that it might be important to determine just what is being taught as the meaning of function, since agreement as to what is being tested is necessary before a test can be constructed. The present article reports an attempt to determine what typical teachers of algebra mean when they speak of a function.

Eleven scenes are examined for information concerning the techniques and terminology of making rope. The definition of certain technical terms is refined from the earlier work of Junker and Vandier, and several scenes are added to Vandier's corpus of rope-making scenes.

The objective of this paper is to review the history of terminology supporting the scientific disciplines of underwater/submarine, maritime and nautical archaeology within the framework of Croatian archaeology, and provide recommendations for future classifications. Underwater archaeology and submarine archaeology are generally accepted technical terms denoting archaeological research conducted under special conditions, and requiring appropriate equipment and tools. Proper definition of terms nautical and maritime archaeology makes it possible to differentiate between the tasks and objectives of the two disciplines and clarify their scientific contributions to archaeology in general, providing a much clearer perception of their content and meaning.

This chapter discusses the characteristics of technical prose in some modern languages as well as in Latin. It specifically aims to question the assertion that Latin technical languages are nothing more than sets of technical terms, and to touch on one or two aspects of Latin technical prose in antiquity and the early Middle Ages. Throughout, the focus is mainly on linguistic features other than the terminology, although part of the argument is that vocabulary is inseparably intertwined with syntax and style. The chapter starts with the question of the definition of technical languages and the scope of their study, and then provides a contention that Latin technical languages are not simply sets of lexical items.

With the success of CSP technology in the last years more players are active in the market, inducing the need for harmonization of technical terms and methodologies. The mission of the SolarPACES “guiSmo” project which was started in 2010 is to develop a guideline for CSP yield analysis [1]. Activities carried out so far have shown that people have different understandings of many terms used in daily CSP practice. Especially for the development of guidelines, the essential terms need to be clearly defined in order to avoid inconsistencies within the same project. A first version of a nomenclature has been compiled by the “guiSmo” team and will undergo final discussion. The aim is to come to a harmonized version by Summer 2013 which will then be presented at the ASME Energy Sustainability conference. The compilation so far includes essential definitions of terms like direct normal irradiance, incident angles, heat flows, and efficiencies on a system level. The definitions presented will be discussed together with existing standards like the ISO 80000 (physical quantities and units of measurement), the ISO 9488 (Solar energy-vocabulary) and other relevant sources. Although the list of terms is primarily put together for the work in the “guiSmo” project, it might serve as a basis for standardization in the official councils. An international group of solar experts is involved in the preparation of the document in order to ensure high quality and international support for the results.

This paper describes some motivations and outlines some limits regarding the possibility and necessity of interreligious, interconfessional, and interideological dialogue, in an attempt to improve our understanding of Orthodox Christianity’s role in these important aspects of domestic and foreign politics. This study aims to resolve the divergent opinions that exist in the Orthodox Church regarding the possibility of remaining in this kind of dialogue. The ancient philosophical mode of dialogue and the modern one are analyzed: dialogue as debate and negotiation. The study begins from the analysis of some technical terms describing the social and spiritual dimensions of dialogue; from the perspective of these spiritual and social dimensions, the possibilities, the potential positive results, and the risks of remaining in dialogue with someone of another confession, belief, or ideology are analyzed. It reveals the evolution of the dialogue’s content, its enrichment with the spiritual dimensions of martyria and exomologesis, and the efficient centrality of the Logos in it, as suggested by the etymological definition of dialogue. It also emphasizes the necessity of a deep understanding of all these spiritual dimensions of dialogue for achieving efficient and fruitful communication with representatives of other social or religious groups. This communication can be seen as a guarantee of peace and social stability.
