Premixed flame acceleration in channels or pipes has various practical applications, starting with fire safety problems and ending with advanced technologies such as pulse-detonation engines. In particular, a flame accelerates extremely fast when propagating through a comb-shaped array of narrow, tightly-spaced obstacles in a so-called "Bychkov tube". In the present thesis, the role of boundary conditions in such geometry is studied by means of the comprehensive computational simulations of combustion equations, with a fully-compressible hydrodynamics and an Arrhenius chemical kinetics. Specifically, the mechanistic (slip/nonslip) and thermal (adiabatic/isothermal) conditions at the walls/obstacles' surfaces, as well as the boundaries at the conduits' extremes (open/closed) are considered. The parametric study includes: the thermal expansion ratio in the range 5≤theta≤10; the wall temperature Tw being 298K≤Tw≤1000K; the pipe radius R exceeding the thermal flame thickness Lƒ by a factor of 12~48; the obstacles blockage ratio in the range 1/3≤alpha≤2/3; and the spacing between the obstacles Deltaz being 0.25R≤Deltaz≤2R.;It is shown that the impacts of both mechanistic and thermal surface conditions on flame propagation are minor and can be omitted. This is because the flame dynamics if mainly driven by flame spreading in an unobstructed portion of an obstructed pipe, i.e. far from the walls. With a fact that real walls are neither slip nor nonslip; neither adiabatic nor isothermal, but in between these categories, the minor role of surface conditions, identified here, validates the Bychkov model, which employs a number of simplifying assumptions, including slip and adiabatic surfaces.;In contrast, the role of the conditions at a pipe extreme is shown to be substantial. While in a semi-open pipe (one end is closed; a flame is ignited at this end and propagates towards the open end), the entire flame-generated jet-flow is pushed towards a single exit, in a pipe with two ends open, this flow is distributed between the upstream and downstream flows, thereby moderating flame propagation. As a result, in this geometry, a flame either accelerates much weaker (in a relatively wide pipe), with a possibility of blowout, or oscillates (in a narrow pipe). The oscillations appear nonlinear in all the situations when they are observed, and the present thesis quantifies the oscillation period and amplitude as well as the average flame velocity in the theta- Tw-alpha-Deltaz-R space.;Since these flame oscillations can be treated as fluctuations around a quasi-steady solution, the present thesis qualitatively supports the recent experiments, modeling and theory of flames in obstructed pipes with both ends open, which all yielded steady or quasi-steady flame propagation prior to an onset of spontaneous flame acceleration and deflagration-to-detonation transition.

Flame dynamics in micro-pipes have been observed to be strongly affected by the wall boundary conditions. In this respect, two mechanisms of flame acceleration are related to the momentum transferred in these regions: 1) that associated with flame stretching produced by wall friction forces; and 2) when obstacles are placed at the walls, as a result of the delayed burning occurring between them, a jet-flow is formed, intensively promoting the flame spreading. Wall thermal conditions have usually been neglected, thus restricting the cases to adiabatic wall conditions. In contrast, in the present work, the effect of the boundary conditions on the flame propagation dynamics is investigated, computationally, with the effect of wall heat losses included in the consideration. In addition, the powerful flame acceleration attained in obstructed pipes is studied in relation to the obstacle size, which determines how different this mechanism is from the wall friction. A parametric study of two-dimensional (2D) channels and cylindrical tubes, of various radiuses, with one end open is performed. The walls are subjected to slip and non-slip, adiabatic and constant temperature conditions, with different fuel mixtures described by varying the thermal expansion coefficients. Results demonstrate that higher wall temperatures promote slower propagation as they reduce the thermal expansion rate, as a result of the post-cooling of the burn matter. In turn, smaller obstacle sizes generate weaker flame acceleration, although the mechanism is noticed to be stronger than the wall friction-driven, even for the smaller sizes considered.

This paper discusses flame acceleration due to flame instability mechanisms. In particular, the diffusive-thermal instability and hydrodynamic instability mechanisms are considered. The Sivashinsky equation is used to compute two-dimensional flame propagation behaviors, and the influence of each instability mechanism is separately considered. The effect of flame size on flame speed (accelerated due to the instability mechanisms) is particularly investigated. It is found that the flame propagation velocity (Vf) is independent of flame size under the influence of diffusive-thermal instability, whereas Vf increases with flame size under the influence of hydrodynamic instability. The fractal nature of the flame under the influence of hydrodynamic instability is confirmed based on the dependence of Vf on flame size. Fractal dimension is then calculated as a function of volume expansion ratio, the parameter that controls the hydrodynamic instability mechanism. An FFT analysis is conducted to further understand the flame’s fractal structure.

In serial memory for spatial information, some studies showed that recall performance suffers when the distance between successive locations increases relatively to the size of the display in which they are presented (the path length effect; e.g., Parmentier et al., 2005) but not when distance is increased by enlarging the size of the display (e.g., Smyth & Scholey, 1994). In the present study, we examined the effect of varying the absolute and relative distance between to-be-remembered items on memory for spatial information. We manipulated path length using small (15″) and large (64″) screens within the same design. In two experiments, we showed that distance was disruptive mainly when it is varied relatively to a fixed reference frame, though increasing the size of the display also had a small deleterious effect on recall. The insertion of a retention interval did not influence these effects, suggesting that rehearsal plays a minor role in mediating the effects of distance on serial spatial memory. We discuss the potential role of perceptual organization in light of the pattern of results.

Background: Cadmium (Cd) impairs gametogenesis and damages the blood-testis barrier. Objective: As the primary mechanism of Cd-induced damage is oxidative stress, the effects of two natural antioxidants, myo-inositol (MI) and seleno-L-methionine (Se), were evaluated in mice testes. Methods: Eighty-four male C57 BL/6J mice were divided into twelve groups: 0.9% NaCl (vehicle; 1 ml/kg/day i.p.); Se (0.2 mg/kg/day per os); Se (0.4 mg/kg/day per os); MI (360 mg/kg/day per os); MI plus Se (0.2 mg/kg/day); MI plus Se (0.4 mg/kg/day); CdCl2 (2 mg/kg/day i.p.) plus vehicle; CdCl2 plus MI; CdCl2 plus Se (0.2 mg/kg/day); CdCl2 plus Se (0.4 mg/kg/day); CdCl2 plus MI plus Se (0.2 mg/kg/day); and CdCl2 plus MI plus Se (0.4 mg/kg/day). After 14 days, testes were processed for biochemical, structural and immunohistochemical analyses. Results: CdCl2 increased iNOS and TNF-α expression and Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, lowered glutathione (GSH) and testosterone, induced testicular lesions, and almost eliminated claudin-11 immunoreactivity. Se administration at 0.2 or 0.4 mg/kg significantly reduced iNOS and TNF-α expression, maintained GSH, MDA and testosterone levels, structural changes and low claudin-11 immunoreactivity. MI alone or associated with Se at 0.2 or 0.4 mg/kg significantly reduced iNOS and TNF-α expression and MDA levels, increased GSH and testosterone levels, ameliorated structural organization and increased claudin-11 patches number. Conclusion: We demonstrated a protective effect of MI, a minor role of Se and an evident positive role of the association between MI and Se on Cd-induced damages of the testis. MI alone or associated with Se might protect testes in subjects exposed to toxicants, at least to those with behavior similar to Cd.

Although previous researchers have demonstrated that people often prefer potential rather than achievement when evaluating other people or products, few have focused on the boundary conditions on this effect. We proposed that the preference for potential would emerge when individuals’ perception of economic mobility was high, but the preference for achievement would emerge among individuals with low perceptions of economic mobility. Our results showed that people paid more attention to the future (vs. the present) when their perception of economic mobility was high; this, in turn, promoted more favorable reactions toward potential (vs. achievement). Thus, we suggested circumstances under which highlighting a person’s potential for future success is effective and those when it is not effective. Moreover, we revealed the important role of individual perceptions regarding economic mobility in driving this effect.

Abstract The gravitational charge algebra of generic asymptotically locally (A)dS spacetimes is derived in n dimensions. The analysis is performed in the Starobinsky/Fefferman-Graham gauge, without assuming any further boundary condition than the minimal falloffs for conformal compactification. In particular, the boundary structure is allowed to fluctuate and plays the role of source yielding some symplectic flux at the boundary. Using the holographic renormalization procedure, the divergences are removed from the symplectic structure, which leads to finite expressions. The charges associated with boundary diffeomorphisms are generically non-vanishing, non-integrable and not conserved, while those associated with boundary Weyl rescalings are non-vanishing only in odd dimensions due to the presence of Weyl anomalies in the dual theory. The charge algebra exhibits a field-dependent 2-cocycle in odd dimensions. When the general framework is restricted to three-dimensional asymptotically AdS spacetimes with Dirichlet boundary conditions, the 2-cocycle reduces to the Brown-Henneaux central extension. The analysis is also specified to leaky boundary conditions in asymptotically locally (A)dS spacetimes that lead to the Λ-BMS asymptotic symmetry group. In the flat limit, the latter contracts into the BMS group in n dimensions.

During development, mesodiencephalic dopaminergic (mdDA) neurons form into different molecular subsets. Knowledge of which factors contribute to the specification of these subsets is currently insufficient. In this study, we examined the role of Tcf4, a member of the E-box protein family, in mdDA neuronal development and subset specification. We show that Tcf4 is expressed throughout development, but is no longer detected in adult midbrain. Deletion of Tcf4 results in an initial increase in TH-expressing neurons at E11.5, but this normalizes at later embryonic stages. However, the caudal subset marker Nxph3 and rostral subset marker Ahd2 are affected at E14.5, indicating that Tcf4 is involved in correct differentiation of mdDA neuronal subsets. At P0, expression of these markers partially recovers, whereas expression of Th transcript and TH protein appears to be affected in lateral parts of the mdDA neuronal population. The initial increase in TH-expressing cells and delay in subset specification could be due to the increase in expression of the bHLH factor Ascl1, known for its role in mdDA neuronal differentiation, upon loss of Tcf4. Taken together, our data identified a minor role for Tcf4 in mdDA neuronal development and subset specification.

Abstract Nature and technology often adopt structures that can be described as tubular helical assemblies. However, the role and mechanisms of these structures remain elusive. In this paper, we study the mechanical response under compression and extension of a tubular assembly composed of 8 helical Kirchhoff rods, arranged in pairs with opposite chirality and connected by pin joints, both analytically and numerically. We first focus on compression and find that, whereas a single helical rod would buckle, the rods of the assembly deform coherently as stable helical shapes wound around a common axis. Moreover, we investigate the response of the assembly under different boundary conditions, highlighting the emergence of a central region where rods remain circular helices. Secondly, we study the effects of different hypotheses on the elastic properties of rods, i.e., stress-free rods when straight versus when circular helices, Kirchhoff’s rod model versus Sadowsky’s ribbon model. Summing up, our findings highlight the key role of mutual interactions in generating a stable ensemble response that preserves the helical shape of the individual rods, as well as some interesting features, and they shed some light on the reasons why helical shapes in tubular assemblies are so common and persistent in nature and technology. AbstractOne of the main problems of practical applications of degressively proportional allocations of goods and burdens is lack of uniqueness of this principle. Even under given boundary conditions of allocation, i.e. determined minimal and maximal amounts of a good that can be assigned in a given allocation, there are usually many feasible solutions. The lack of formal rules of allocation is the reason why the allocation is typically a result of negotiations among its agents. A number of allocations favor some of agents or their groups, therefore other agents cannot accept them. The aim of this paper is to indicate a way of reducing the set of all feasible solutions exclusively to those that are neutral to all agents. As a result of the term of lexicographic preference of allocation agents defined on the basis of the relation theory followed by a numerical analysis of sets of all feasible solutions, it is possible to determine a core of this set in the form of a subset of all feasible solutions that are acceptable by all agents. In addition, this subset can be further divided into smaller subsets with regard to the degree of acceptance of their elements. Theoretical analysis is complemented by case studies, one of which is application of this idea to the allocation of seats in the European Parliament among the member states of the European Union.
