Hierarchical classes (HICLAS) models for multi-way multi-mode data constitute a unique family of classification models in that (a) they simultaneously induce a hierarchical classification (of the elements) of each mode and (b) they link the hierarchical classifications together by an association relation that yieldsa predicted (or reconstructed) value for each cell in the data array. For the case of three-way three-mode binary data, the most prominent HICLAS models include INDCLAS and Tucker3-HICLAS. In this paper, we compare the latter two models, introducing the underlying theory of both in substantive terms and showing how a Tucker3-HICLAS analysis may result in a simpler model than that yielded by INDCLAS, although the former is mathematically more complex than the latter (which it includes as a special case). We illustrate by two applications: astudy on anger responses in frustrating situations and a case-study on emotions in interpersonal relations.

A universal method to evaluate groundwater pollution risk with the site scale has not been established. The groundwater pollution risk is commonly evaluated by overlaying the results of groundwater vulnerability and pollution sources, but this method is inapplicable for contaminated sites. Considering the current supervision demands of groundwater pollution in China, this paper suggests a risk evaluation method for contaminated sites. The present and forecasted groundwater pollutant concentrations and the variation trend of groundwater quality were used to get the risk classes of groundwater pollution. Chromium is one of the most common groundwater contaminants found at industrially contaminated sites. A chromium residue disposal site in Baotou, China was selected as the study area. The groundwater flow model and solute transport model were constructed by MODFLOW and MT3DMS. Based on the simulation results of the numerical model, the groundwater pollution risk of the contaminated site was divided into four classes, and the regulation measures of groundwater pollution were suggested. This study could provide guidance for the environmental supervision and management of contaminated sites.

Abstract A river is a highly complex structure and the constituent of landscape and catchment basin from which it drains water. In the holistic concept, a river is defined in mutual interactions with its surroundings as a spatial system - the riverine landscape. As a product of fluvial processes, the riverine landscape has a regular spatial hierarchical structure, which is determined by the structure of its morphology, substrate, biota, land cover and socioeconomic structures. The aim of this paper is to verify the river landscape hierarchical classification and to identify the so-called higher taxa - zones and segments in the Smrečianka valley. The main data sources were hydrological maps at 1:50 000, topographic maps at 1:10 000 and 1:25 000, GIS database levels, geological maps at 1:50 000, and the boundaries were specified by a field survey

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the health/functioning of the older adult who consumes psychoactive substances through the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, considering the theory of complexity. Method: Qualitative case study, with 11 older adults, held between December 2015 and February 2016 in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, using interviews, documents and non-systematic observation. It was approved by the ethics committee. The analysis followed the propositions of the case study, using the complexity of Morin as theoretical basis. Results: We identified older adults who consider themselves healthy and show alterations - the alterations can be exacerbated by the use of psychoactive substances - of health/functioning expected according to the natural course of aging such as: systemic arterial hypertension; depressive symptoms; dizziness; tinnitus; harmed sleep/rest; and inadequate food and water consumption. Final consideration: The assessment of health/functioning of older adults who use psychoactive substances, guided by complex thinking, exceeds the accuracy limits to risk the understanding of the phenomena in its complexity.
