Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii Valenciennes, 1847) is a commercially important species that inhabits the coastal waters of the North Pacific from Korea to California, USA. This study analyzed the target strength (TS; dB re 1 m2) of Pacific herring individuals (n = 14, total length (LT) = 21.3–32.3 cm) at 38 and 120 kHz using ex-situ measurements and the Kirchhoff-ray mode (KRM) model. The least-squares regressions of the TS–LT relationship for the ex-situ measurements were TS38kHz = 20 log10(LT) − 70.10 (r = 0.17) and TS120kHz = 20 log10(LT) − 70.59 (r = 0.10). The least-squares regressions for the KRM model were TS38kHz = 20 log10(LT) − 68.39 (r = 0.40) and TS120kHz = 20 log10(LT) − 69.74 (r = 0.49). The b20 value of the KRM model was 1.71 dB higher than that of the ex-situ measurement at 38 kHz but similar at 120 kHz. These results provide basic data to evaluate the distribution and abundance of Pacific herring using fisheries’ acoustic technology.

The Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii) is one of the most important species in the commercial fisheries distributed in the North Pacific Ocean and the northeastern European seas. This teleost has marine and lake ecological forms a long its distribution in the Holarctic. However, the level of genetic differentiation between these two forms is not well known. In the present study, we used ddRAD-sequencing to genotype 54 specimens from twelve wild Pacific herring populations from the Kara Sea and the Russian part of the northwestern Pacific Ocean for unveiling the genetic structure of Pacific herring. We found that the Kara Sea population is significantly distinct from Pacific Ocean populations. It was demonstrated that lake populations of Pacific herring differ from one another as well as from marine specimens. Our results show that fresh and brackish water Pacific herring, which inhabit lakes, can be distinguished as a separate lake ecological form. Moreover, we demonstrate that each observed lake Pacific herring population has its own and unique genetic legacy.

Based on observed correlations, marine fisheries are often hypothesized to depend on environmental factors. Since correlations are unreliable as a predictive tool, it is desirable to seek mechanistic explanations for observed correlations. This paper considers methods available for testing such mechanistic explanations. As a specific example, we consider the optimal stability window, proposed as a mechanistic explanation of observed correlations between the survival of North Pacific salmon stocks and the state of the atmosphere over the North Pacific in winter, as applied to the coastal waters and fisheries of southern British Columbia, Canada.

To elucidate the global distribution and toxicological impacts of persistent organochlorines (OCs) on cetaceans, the present study determined the concentrations of organochlorine pesticides such as DDT and its metabolites (DDTs), hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (HCHs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), chlordane compounds (CHLs) and PCBs including toxic coplanar congeners in the blubber of 10 species of adult male odontoceti cetaceans collected from several locations in the North Pacific Ocean and coastal waters of Japan, Hong Kong, Philippines and India during 1985–1997. Concentrations of tris(4-chlorophenyl)methane (TCPMe) and tris(4-chlorophenyl)methanol (TCPMOH), which are among the newly identified contaminants, were also determined. Residue pattern was in the order of DDTs≥PCBs>CHLs>HCHs>HCB>TCPMOH>TCPMe. Greater DDT concentrations were found in cetaceans from the Japan Sea, coastal waters of Hong Kong and India, indicating serious marine pollution in industrialized Asian nations and current usage of DDTs in tropical regions. In general, cetaceans inhabiting cold and temperate waters contained relatively higher concentrations of PCBs, HCHs, CHLs and HCB as compared with those from tropical regions, reflecting atmospheric transport from the tropical sources to the northern sinks. Latitudinal distribution of TCPMe and TCPMOH in cetaceans from the North Pacific Ocean and Asian coastal waters was similar to that of DDTs, suggesting the less transportable nature of TCPMe and TCPMOH in the marine environment. Penta- and hexa-chlorobiphenyls were the predominant PCB congeners, accounting for about 70% of the total PCBs. 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin equivalents (TEQs) of non- and mono-ortho coplanar PCBs in the blubber of cetaceans ranged from 36 (in spinner dolphin from Philippines) to 510 pg/g wet wt (in hump-backed dolphin from Hong Kong). Toxic evaluation of coplanar PCBs using TEQ concept indicates an increasing impact on cetaceans from mid-latitudes. Mono-ortho congener IUPAC 118 or non-ortho congener IUPAC 126 was estimated to have the greatest toxicity contribution. The estimated TEQ concentrations in the blubber of some cetacean species exceeded the level associated with immunosuppresion in harbour seals.

In situ measurements of capelin (Mallotus villosus) target strength (TS) were collected during summer 2001–2003 near Kodiak Island in the Gulf of Alaska, using a calibrated EK500 echosounder with 38 and 120 kHz split-beam transducers. Targets were detected over dispersed, night-time aggregations using standard acoustic methods, then filtered using a quality-control algorithm to reject invalid targets. The 38 kHz-based, fitted model estimate was TS = 20 log10L− 70.3 (r2 = 0.30), where L is total length of fish. Compared with other studies, the TS-fitted model at 38 kHz was similar to that calculated from swimbladder morphology measurements from St Lawrence estuary capelin (TS = 20 log10L− 69.3), but resulted in greater estimates than models based on in situ measurements of capelin TS in the Barents Sea (TS = 19.1 log10L−74.0) and northern Atlantic Ocean (TS = 20 log10L − 73.1). The large intraspecific variability exhibited in the fitted TS – L models for this species suggests the use of TS measurements from the geographic region where the data were collected.

Ex situ target-strength measurements of Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) in the coastal Northwest Pacific. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 66: 1219–1224. The Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) is an important species in regard to the fisheries and ecology of the coastal Northwest Pacific. Measurements of ex situ target strength (TS; dB re 1 m2) were made on live anchovy using 38, 120, and 200 kHz split-beam echosounders. The fish were tethered using small hooks attached to their mouths. During the acoustic measurements, an underwater video camera was used to continuously monitor fish behaviour and tilt-angle (θ). Data for 35 individual anchovy ranging from immature to adult sizes (total lengths LT = 4.8–12.2 cm) were analysed. Least-squares regression fits of TS vs. log(LT) were: TS38 kHz = 20 log(LT) − 65.8 (r2 = 0.82), TS120 kHz = 20 log(LT) − 68.4 (r2 = 0.84), and TS200 kHz = 20 log(LT) − 69.1 (r2 = 0.71). The LT vs. wet weight (W; g) relationship for these fish was W = 0.0036 LT3.204. The mean θ for anchovy swimming freely in a large seawater tank was 9.1° (s.d. = 13.1°). These ex situ measurements of TS, LT, W, and θ can be applied to improve acoustic estimates of Japanese anchovy biomass.

The prevalence and intensity of polyopisthocotylean monogeneans on the gills of three commercially important species of sparid caught in Omani coastal waters close to the city port of Muscat were determined and compared. Throughout May 2012 to April 2013, infections on bi-weekly samples of the soldier seabream, Argyrops filamentosus (Valenciennes, 1830), the king soldier seabream, Argyrops spinifer (Forsskål, 1775), and, the silver seabream, Rhabdosargus sabra were evaluated. From a total of 200 specimens (standard length of 26–52 cm), caught by line angling or by traps, at least three species of gill monogenean, namely Omanicotyle [Bivagina] heterospina, Heteromicrocotyla sp. and Microcotyle sp., were commonly encountered. Silver bream, which was infected by all three monogeneans, bore the highest infections (100% prevalence; mean intensity of 20.14 ± 0.92 parasites fish-1), whilst the soldier bream, which was infected only by O. heterospina had the lowest levels of infection (of the three sparids with 63.8% prevalence; mean intensity 5.8 ± 0.17 parasites fish-1). Comments on the distribution of monogeneans on each host are provided but to what extent this is influenced by water current speeds passing through the buccal and opercular cavities, gill morphology, parasite size, and / or the morphology and efficiency of the parasite’s attachment apparatus requires establishing and forms the basis of ongoing investigations.

Population parameters for two commercially important fishes of Sciaenidae from the coastal waters of Ghana were assessed using length-frequency data obtained from August 2017 to June 2019. Samples of the assessed fish species were obtained through experimental fish trawl along the coast of Greater Accra, Ghana. Trawling was performed every quarter for an average of one hour at an average speed of 3.0 km/hr. In all, a total of 399 samples were measured and the obtained data were analyzed with FiSAT II. The assessed fish species included Pteroscion peli (165 samples) and Pseudotolithus senegalensis (234 samples). The asymptotic length (L∞) was 19.4 cm and 41.5 cm forPteroscion peli and Pseudotolithus senegalensis. Pteroscion peli and Pseudotolithus senegalensis recorded growth rate (K) of 0.48 and 0.50 per year respectively. Both assessed fish species exhibited continuous recruitment pattern with minor and major recruitment peaks. The total mortality rate (Z) was 1.86 and 1.63 per year for Pteroscion peli and Pseudotolithus senegalensis. The fishing mortality rate (F) was estimated at 0.66 and 0.63 per year for Pteroscion peli and Pseudotolithus senegalensis. The natural mortality rate (M) estimated for Pteroscion peli and Pseudotolithus senegalensis was 1.20 and 1.00 per year respectively. The exploitation rate (E) of Pseudotolithus senegalensis (0.39) and Pteroscion peli (0.36) respectively was far below the maximum exploitation rate (Emax), indicating under-exploitation of its fishery in the coastal waters of Ghana, hence the need to enhance the exploitation of these species.

The maritime fur trade caused the extirpation of sea otters from southeast Alaska. In the 1960s, sea otters were reintroduced, and their numbers have increased. Now, sea otters are competing with people for what have become commercially important invertebrates. After having been absent for more than a century, the reentry of this keystone species has unsettled people. Although some communities perceive sea otters as a threat to their livelihoods, others view their return as restoration of the marine ecosystem. The federal Marine Mammal Protection Act authorizes any Alaska Native to harvest sea otters for subsistence provided that the harvest is not wasteful. Some people are seeking to define “traditional” Tlingit use of sea otters as not only using their pelts but consuming them as food, but some Tlingit maintain they never ate sea otters. This project analyzes the largest precontact archaeological assemblage of sea otter bones in southeast Alaska, with the benefit of insights gained from observing a Tlingit hunter skin a sea otter to infer that Tlingit ancestors hunted sea otters primarily for pelts. The extent to which other Indigenous peoples of the North Pacific consumed sea otters as food deserves investigation, especially as sea otters recolonize their historic range.
