Abutment scour is a complex three-dimensional phenomenon, which is one of the leading causes of marine structure damage. Structural integrity is potentially attainable through the precise estimation of local scour depth. Due to the high complexity of scouring hydrodynamics, existing regression-based relations cannot make accurate predictions. Therefore, this study presented a novel expansion of extreme learning machines (ELM) to predict abutment scour depth (ds) in clear water conditions. The model was built using the relative flow depth (h/L), excess abutment Froude number (Fe), abutment shape factor (Ks), and relative sediment size (d50/L). A wide range of experimental samples was collected from the literature, and data was utilized to develop the ELM model. The ELM model reliability was evaluated based on the estimation results and several statistical indices. According to the results, the sigmoid activation function (correlation coefficient, R = 0.97; root mean square error, RMSE = 0.162; mean absolute percentage error, MAPE = 7.69; and scatter index, SI = 0.088) performed the best compared with the hard limit, triangular bias, radial basis, and sine activation functions. Eleven input combinations were considered to investigate the impact of each dimensionless variable on the abutment scour depth. It was found that ds/L = f (Fe, h/L, d50/L, Ks) was the best ELM model, indicating that the dimensional analysis of the original data properly reflected the underlying physics of the problem. Also, the absence of one variable from this input combination resulted in a significant accuracy reduction. The results also demonstrated that the proposed ELM model significantly outperformed the regression-based equations derived from the literature. The ELM model presented a fundamental equation for abutment scours depth prediction. Based on the simulation results, it appeared the ELM model could be used effectively in practical engineering applications of predicting abutment scour depth. The estimated uncertainty of the developed ELM model was calculated and compared with the conventional and artificial intelligence-based models. The lowest uncertainty with a value of ±0.026 was found in the proposed model in comparison with ±0.50 as the best uncertainty of the other models.

In the present study, the Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) network has been utilized to predict abutments scour depth for both clear-water and live-bed conditions. The GMDH network was developed using a Back Propagation algorithm (BP). Input parameters that were considered as effective variables on abutment scour depth included properties of sediment size, geometry of bridge abutments, and properties of approaching flow. Training and testing performances of the GMDH network were carried out using dimensionless parameters that were collected from the literature. The testing results were compared with those obtained using the Support Vector Machines (SVM) model and the traditional equations. The GMDH network predicted the abutment scour depth with lower error (RMSE (root mean square error) = 0.29 and MAPE (mean absolute percentage of error) = 0.99) and higher (R = 0.98) accuracy than those performed using the SVM model and the traditional equations.

Laboratory data for local scour depth regarding the size of wide piers are presented. Clear water scour tests were performed for various pier widths (0.06, 0.076, 0.102, 0.14 and 0.165 m), two types of pier shapes (circular and rectangular) and two types of uniform cohesionless bed sediment (d50 = 0.23 and d50 = 0.80 mm). New data are presented and used to demonstrate the effects of pier width, pier shape and sediment size on scour depth. The influence of equilibrium time (te) on scouring processes is also discussed. Equilibrium scour depths were found to decrease with increasing values of b/d50. The temporal development of equilibrium local scour depth with new laboratory data is demonstrated for flow intensity V/Vc = 0.95. On the other hand, the results of scour mechanism have shown a significant relationship between normalized volume of scoured and deposited with pier width, b. The experimental data obtained in this study and data available from the literature for wide piers are used to evaluate predictions of existing methods.

An experimental investigation on scour at circular and square piers in uniform and non-uniform gravels (fine and medium sizes) under clear-water scour at limiting stability of gravels is presented. From the experimental results, it is observed that the equilibrium scour depth increases with decrease in gravel size. The variation of equilibrium scour depth with gravel sizes departures considerably from that with sand sizes. Consequently, the resulting sediment size factors for gravels, obtained from envelope curve fitting, are significantly different from the existing sediment size factor for sands. The influence of gravel gradation on scour depth is also prominent in non-uniform gravels. The time scales to represent the time variation of scour depth in uniform and non-uniform gravels are determined. For uniform gravels, the non-dimensional time scale increases with increase in pier Froude number and gravel size, whereas for non-uniform gravels, it decreases with increase in geometric standard deviation of particle size distribution of gravels.Key words: bridge pier, gravel beds, scour, erosion, sediment transport, open channel flow, hydraulic engineering.

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a novel near net shape manufacturing technology that joins metallic powders layer upon layer in conjunction with 3D model data and as such offers tremendous potential to a wide range of industrial sectors given its ability to produce highly intricate components with very little material wastage. Subsequently, the aerospace industry has become particularly interested in utilising AM as a means of manufacturing nickel-based superalloys for high-temperature applications, such as non-rotating components within gas turbine engines, which are traditionally fabricated through traditional cast and wrought methodologies. As a result of this, a detailed understanding of the influence of key process variables on the structural integrity of the different experimental builds is required. A semi-empirical quantitative approach for melt track analysis has been conducted and the impact on melt track sizing and defect forming mechanisms in the as-built and heat-treated condition is investigated.

The linear matching method (LMM) subroutines and plug-in tools for structural integrity assessment are now in extensive use in industries for the design and routine assessment of power plant components. This paper presents a detailed review and case study of the current state-of-the art LMM direct methods applied to the structural integrity assessment. The focus is on the development and use of the linear matching method framework (LMMF) on a wide range of crucial aspects for the power industry. The LMMF is reviewed to show a wide range of capabilities of the direct methods under this framework, and the basic theory background is also presented. Different structural integrity aspects are covered including the calculation of shakedown, ratchet, and creep rupture limits. Furthermore, the crack initiation assessments of an un-cracked body by the LMM are shown for cases both with and without the presence of a creep dwell during the cyclic loading history. Finally, an overview of the in house developed LMM plug-in is given, presenting the intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) developed. The efficiency and robustness of these direct methods in calculating the aforementioned quantities are confirmed through a numerical case study, which is a semicircular notched (Bridgman notch) bar. A two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element model is adopted, and the notched bar is subjected to both cyclic and constant axial mechanical loads. For the crack initiation assessment, different cyclic loading conditions are evaluated to demonstrate the impact of the different load types on the structural response. The impact of creep dwell is also investigated to show how this parameter is capable of causing in some cases a dangerous phenomenon known as creep ratcheting. All the results in the case study demonstrate the level of simplicity of the LMMs but at the same time accuracy, efficiency, and robustness over the more complicated and inefficient incremental finite element analyses.

An experimental study was conducted of the depth of clear-water scour around the end of a square-edged bridge abutment terminating in the floodplain of a compound channel. The study's purpose was to improve current techniques of abutment scour prediction, which are based primarily on laboratory studies in rectangular channels. It is indicated that a discharge contraction ratio arising from a theoretical contraction scour analysis for equilibrium conditions can be used for explaining the effect of flow distribution on the local abutment scour depth in the case where significant backwater occurs from bridge contraction. The use of reference values of approach flow depth and velocity in the floodplain for undisturbed conditions without the bridge is shown to collapse experimental results for scour depth in both the case of a contraction with negligible backwater, and the case of a contraction with significant backwater in the bridge approach section.

Abstract Scour around bridge piers is a complex phenomenon and it is essential to assess or predict the scour hazard around bridge piers in tandem with completely understanding its mechanism. To date, there is no exact method for the estimation of scour depth. Nowadays, machine learning techniques are being recognized as effective tools for the prediction of scour depth using experimental data. In the present study, gradient tree boosting (GTB) technique was used for the prediction of scour depth around various pier shapes under different streambed conditions. Sediment size, sediment quantity, velocity, and flow time were used as input parameters to predict the scour depth under clear-water and live-bed scour conditions. The scour depth was predicted for different pier shapes such as, circular, rectangular, round-nosed and sharp-nosed shaped. The GTB model predicted scour depth values were compared with that of the group method of data handling (GMDH) technique. The performance of GTB and GMDH models were then evaluated based on statistical indices such as RRMSE, NNSE, WI, MNE, SI, and KGE. The study concludes that the GTB model performance was relatively superior to that of GMDH in the prediction of scour depth around different pier shapes.

The structural integrity of wood is closely related to its brittleness and thus to its suitability for numerous applications where dynamic loads, wear and abrasion occur. The structural integrity of wood is only vaguely correlated with its density, but affected by different chemical, physico-structural and anatomical characteristics, which are difficult to encompass as a whole. This study aimed to analyze the results from High-Energy Multiple Impact (HEMI) tests of a wide range of softwood and hardwood species with an average oven-dry wood density in a range between 0.25 and 0.99 g/cm³ and multifaceted anatomical features. Therefore, small clear specimens from a total of 40 different soft- and hardwood species were crushed in a heavy vibratory ball mill. The obtained particles were fractionated and used to calculate the ‘Resistance to Impact Milling (RIM)’ as a measure of the wood structural integrity. The differences in structural integrity and thus in brittleness were predominantly affected by anatomical characteristics. The size, density and distribution of vessels as well as the ray density of wood were found to have a significant impact on the structural integrity of hardwoods. The structural integrity of softwood was rather affected by the number of growth ring borders and the occurrence of resin canals. The density affected the Resistance to Impact Milling (RIM) of neither the softwoods nor the hardwoods.

Abstract This study presents the effect of different parameters on scouring process around spur dikes. Our research group's stated objective was to evaluate the effects of sediment gradation, flow depth, spur angle and spur length on scouring process. Since most existing studies generally employed uniform sediment; in this study uniform and non-uniform sediment were selected. Experiments were made in a rectangular open channel in uniform flow conditions. Results showed that the effect of the spur dike length and the orientation angle on sediment scour varies with the type of sediment used. Scour volumes were 40% greater in uniform sediments than in non-uniform sediments. Measured scour depth was maximum at spurs perpendicular to the flow, whereas the scour volume was maximum at spurs directed upstream. The scour depth increased with an increase in the spur length; however, effect of spur length on scouring varied at a contraction rate of 0.29 for uniform sediments and 0.36 for non-uniform sediments. A multiple regression analysis was also performed, and four equations were suggested to predict the scour depth and scour volume. Comparisons were made with the literature equations applicable for clear-water scouring to check the suggested equation. Because of a wide range of contraction ratios considered in this study, the equations which considered the contraction effect yielded better estimates.

It is just as important for top executives as it is to middle management, supervisors and shop floor workers. Poor teamwork at any level or between levels can seriously damage organizational effectiveness. The focus of this paper was therefore to examine whether leadership practices consist of team leader behavior, conflict resolution style and openness in communication significantly influenced the team member’s satisfaction in hotel industry. Result indicates that team leader behavior and the conflict resolution style significantly influenced team member satisfaction. It was surprising that openness in communication did not affect significantly to the team members’ satisfaction.
