Orthognathic surgical planning compromises three clinical needs: occlusal balancing, symmetry, and harmony, which may result in multiple outcomes. Facial symmetry is the ultimate goal for patients and practitioners. Pure virtual planning and mixed reality planning were two innovative technologies in clinical practices compared to conventional model surgery used for decades. We proposed quantitative asymmetry assessment methods in both mandibular contour (in 2D) and a midface and mandible relationship in 3D. A computerized optimal symmetry plane, being the median plane, was applied in both planning methods. In the 3D asymmetry assessment between two planning methods, the deviation angle and deviation distance between midface and mandible were within 2° and 1.5 mm, respectively. There was no significant difference, except the symmetry index of the anterior deviation angle between the virtual and mixed reality planning in the 3D asymmetry assessment. In the mandible contour assessment, there was no significant difference between the virtual and mixed reality planning in asymmetry assessment in the frontal and frontal downward inclined views. Quantitative outcomes in 3D asymmetry indices showed that mixed reality planning was slightly more symmetric than virtual planning, with the opposite in 2D contouring.

Abstract Background Today virtual surgical planning (VSP) is a standard method in maxillofacial corrective surgery and is the key to reach satisfactory esthetic outcomes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate usability of three established virtual surgical planning software applications by comparing feasibility, time consumption, and costs in a standardized workflow for a modified intraoral quadrangular Le Fort II osteotomy (IQLFIIO). Results A cross-sectional study was performed based on retrospective and re-planned data of patients with midfacial deficiency treated by modified IQLFIIO, using three software applications: IPS Case Designer ®, Dolphin Imaging ®, and ProPlan CMF ®. Feasibility: All evaluated steps of the VSP procedure could be successfully performed in all three evaluated applications. In all software packages, it was possible to design the surgical splints with CAD/CAM technology. Working time: The mean value of time needed was IPS Case Designer ®, 36.5 min; Dolphin Imaging ®, 33.6 min; ProPlan CMF ®, 45.5 min. We found statistical significant difference between ProPlan CMF ® and Dolphin Imaging ® (p value, 0.02). Costs: Asset costs for acquiring the software, license fee, license possibilities, paying for support services, and service contracts were evaluated and are found in similar ranges. Conclusion All three tested software applications are usable for virtual planning of an IQLFIIO and splint production by CAD/CAM technology. Successful movement of bone segments and overlaying soft tissues proved feasibility. Time consumption and costs were found in similar ranges.

Introduction: The T1 slope is important for cervical surgical planning, and it may be invisible on radiographic images. The prevalence of T1 invisible cases and the differences in demographic and radiographic characteristics between patients whose T1 slopes are visible or invisible remains unexplored. Methods: This pilot study aimed to evaluate the differences in these characteristics between outpatients whose T1 slopes were visible or invisible on radiographic images. Patients (n = 60) who underwent cervical radiography, whose T1 slope was confirmed clearly, were divided into the visible (V) group and invisible (I) group. The following radiographic parameters were measured: (1) C2-7 sagittal vertical axis (SVA), (2) C2-7 angle in neutral, flexion, and extension positions. Results: Based on the T1 slope visibility, 46.7% of patients were included in group I. The I group had significantly larger C2-7 SVA than the V group for males (p < 0.05). The C2-7 SVA tended to be larger in the I group, without significant difference for females (p = 0.362). Discussion: The mean C2-7 angle in neutral and flexion positions was not significantly different between the V and I groups for either sex. The mean C2-7 angle in the extension position was greater in the V group. The T1 slope was invisible in males with high C2-7 SVA.

Today the world is facing a high prevalence of dyslipidemia among type II diabetes, and in matter of fact clinical practices against hyperglycemic and hyperlipidemia were quiet intrusive. Our aim was to determine the therapeutic compliance against the clinical practices of dyslipidemia with type II diabetes in a multiracial society. A three year retrospective cohort study was planned to achieve the above mentioned objectives of the study. Study was carried out in out-patient department of General Hospital Penang over a period of ten months (Jan–Oct 2008). Study data collection duration was from Jan 2005–Dec 2007. All the concerned approvals were obtained from Clinical Research Committee (CRC). Data was analyzed by using SPSS 15®. A total of all only 501 diabetes type 2 patients with dyslipidemia were included in this study. The demographic data showed that 55.9% (n = 280) were female patients and 44.1% (n = 221) were male patients. According to racial distribution, Chinese constituted 41.7% of the study population, Malay 34.3% and Indians 24%. The mean age was 62.2 ± 9.2 years. About 56.1% of patients were more and equal than 60 years old range, while 43.9% were in the less or equal range of 59 years. Lifestyle and social habits data demonstrated 86.2% non-smokers, 74.1% with uncontrolled diet and 78.4% on bad exercise. Patients on combination therapy of metformin with other antidiabetic agent were 79%, while 21% were on monotherapy. The test analysis revealed that there was a significant difference between Malay and Chinese in FPG levels, in which the Malay had higher mean FPG than Chinese (mean difference Malay/Chinese 0.75991, P = 0.007). This study showed that both metformin and lovastatin were effective in reducing elevated glucose and lipid values. However, for glucose levels, the values were still above the normal limit used by the hospital. Among the multiracial study population, Chinese had the most controlled HDL levels and Malay had the highest uncontrolled FPG levels. Recommendations were associated with more frequent follow- up and therapeutic monitoring for the patient's condition by the health practitioners to determine the appropriate compliance with therapy and to control diabetes and dyslipidemia as per needed with therapeutic goals.

Abstract Patients undergoing radiotherapy treatment present more susceptibility to dental caries and the use of an orthodontic device increases this risk factor due to biofilm accumulation around the brackets. The objective of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength to irradiated permanent teeth of orthodontic brackets bonded with conventional glass ionomer cement and resin-modified glass ionomer cement due to the fluoride release capacity of these materials. Ninety prepared human premolars were divided into 6 groups (n=15), according to the bonding material and use or not of radiation: CR: Transbond XT composite resin; RMGIC: Fuji Ortho LC conventional glass ionomer cement; GIC: Ketac Cem Easymix resin-modified glass ionomer cement. The groups were irradiated (I) or non-irradiated (NI) prior to bracket bonding. The specimens were subjected to a fractioned radiation dose of 2 Gy over 5 consecutive days for 6 weeks. After the radiotherapy, the brackets were bonded on the specimens with Transbond XT, Fuji Ortho LC and Ketac Cem Easymix. After 24 h, the specimens were subjected to shear bond strength test. The image of enamel surface (classified by Adhesive Remnant Index - ARI) was also evaluated and its frequency was checked among groups/subgroups. The shear bond strength variable was evaluated with ANOVA and Tukey’s post-hoc test. GIC group showed the lowest adhesion values among the groups (p<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference among non-irradiated and irradiated groups (p>0.05). As for the ARI, the CR-I group showed the highest material retention on enamel surface among the irradiated groups. RMGIC group showed the highest values for shear bond strength and presented ARI acceptable for clinical practices.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the reporting and performance of colonoscopy in a large urban centre.METHODS: Colonoscopies performed between January and April 2008 in community hospitals and academic centres in the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (Manitoba) were identified from hospital discharge databases and retrospective review of a random sample of identified charts. Information regarding reporting of colonoscopies (including bowel preparation, photodocumentation of cecum/ileum, size, site, characteristics and method of polyp removal), colonoscopy completion rates and follow-up recommendations was extracted. Colonoscopy completion rates were compared among different groups of physicians.RESULTS: A total of 797 colonoscopies were evaluated. Several deficiencies in reporting were identified. For example, bowel preparation quality was reported in only 20%, the agent used for bowel preparation was recorded in 50%, photodocumentation of colonoscopy completion in 6% and polyp appearance (ie, pedunculated or not) in 34%, and polyp size in 66%. Although the overall colonoscopy completion rate was 92%, there was a significant difference among physicians with varying medical specialty training and volume of procedures performed. Recommendations for follow-up procedures (barium enema, computed tomography colonography or repeat colonoscopy) were recorded for a minority of individuals with reported poor bowel preparation or incomplete colonoscopy.CONCLUSIONS: The present study found many deficiencies in reporting of colonoscopy in typical, city-wide clinical practices. Colonoscopy completion rates varied among different physician specialties. There is an urgent need to adopt standardized colonoscopy reporting systems in everyday practice and to provide feedback to physicians regarding deficiencies so they can be rectified.

This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the perceived stress levels of nursing students regarding the clinical practice during the Covid-19 pandemic. The study was conducted between May 20 and June 20, 2020, with 252 students studying in all classes in the Nursing Departments of Necmettin Erbakan University. The data were collected using the Information Form and the Perceived Stress Scale for Nursing Students (PSSNS). 52.0% of the students felt uncomfortable thinking about Covid-19, and 62.2% stated that their anxiety increased when they thought they were infected with Covid-19. The study further revealed that 57.9% of the nursing students were afraid to provide care to the individuals diagnosed with Covid-19 and 82.1% stated that they did not have enough knowledge to provide care to those individuals. Our study revealed that there is a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of the Perceived Stress Scale for Nursing Students and the students’ gender (p<0.01), the status of willingly choosing the nursing profession (p<0.01), the interest in the nursing profession during the Covid-19 pandemic (p<0.01), having enough knowledge to provide care to individuals diagnosed with Covid-19 (p<0.01), being uncomfortable thinking about Covid-19 (p<0.01), being afraid to provide care to individuals diagnosed with Covid-19 (p<0.01), and the increased anxiety level thinking that they were infected with Covid-19 (p<0.01). In this study, female nurses and nurses who did not choose the nursing profession willingly, whose interests in the nursing profession were negatively affected during the pandemic period, who believe that they do not have the knowledge or who do not want to provide care to individuals diagnosed with Covid-19, who are afraid to provide care, and who are uncomfortable thinking about Covid-19 were found to have higher perceived stress levels. It is recommended to offer training and counseling to the nursing students with high perceived stress levels

The purpose of this study was to analyze students in understanding ”faith in angels”. Also, the researchers tried to provide handouts with the example and non-example learning model and conventional model. This study employed the mixed-method approach, where the researchers used quantitative and qualitative data in formulating the results. The sample consisted of 68 junior high school students. The sample was determined by a total sampling of students studying Islamic Education at the Bengkulu school. The results showed that the concept of students' understanding of faith in angels was categorized as good. Furthermore, there is no significant difference between the use of the example and non-example model or the conversion model with handouts. The handouts made can make it easier to understand the concept of faith in angels even though they are used using the example and non-example and conventional model. The research with the handout of ”faith in angels” makes it easier for students to learn Islamic Education because it includes the picture and example real-life existence of angels.

Thorough technical knowledge and anatomical understanding are critical for optimal surgical results. The difficulty of complete maxillary surgery can vary significantly depending on the complexity of the anatomy or bone defect. In this work, we analyze and compare two methods of software-guided planning for the manipulation of dental implants, associated with the All on Four (ALL) and Four on pillars (FOUR) techniques used in patients with atrophic maxillae. Forty-two images of totally edentulous patients were analyzed, and surgical planning was performed using both methods. The average area of the Four on pillars technique is 4.9x (p<0.0001) greater than the average area of the All on four technique, this represents a difference of 489%. This means that, for the same force applied by the jaw, we will have a 4.9x smaller pressure, that is, a better distribution of forces on the jaws. It was not possible to notice a statistical difference between the success proportions (p=0.2542), this means that both techniques have a non-different (similar) success proportion. We conclude that the area of the polygon formed in the Four on pillars surgical plan is larger than in the All on four plan and this results in significantly less pressure on the implants. We also concluded that it was not possible to notice a statistical difference between the proportions of success, which shows that there is no technique with successful performance advantages over the other.
