A compressed air system (CAS) is one of the most common and energy-consuming systems in manufacturing. To practice more economically and environmentally sustainable manufacturing, manufacturers need ways to reduce the energy costs and carbon footprint, resulting from a CAS in their production systems. While preliminary energy studies on a CAS and on machining processes are available separately, existing research studies rarely analyze energy costs using a tool that considers both a CAS and production systems. Therefore, in this study, we propose an energy simulation tool that combines a CAS and a production system to evaluate the effects of a CAS and production parameters on energy consumption and costs at a factory level. In particular, we develop a time-discretized algorithm for simulating a CAS to accurately consider the dynamics of CAS parameters such as pressure and flow rate. From 48 simulation case studies, we show that changes in a CAS such as proper HP sizing, a reduction in compressed air leaks, and a decrease in the discharge pressure can increase productivity and reduce energy costs by up to 11%. The simulation analysis from this study suggests a way to help manufacturers and researchers find more sustainable ways to achieve energy-efficient configurations for production systems including a CAS.

This paper explores the modeling of incipient cutting by Abaqus, LS-Dyna, and Ansys Finite Element Methods (FEMs), by comparing also experimentally the results on different material classes, including common aluminum and steel alloys and an acetal polymer. The target application is the sustainable manufacturing of gecko adhesives by micromachining a durable mold for injection molding. The challenges posed by the mold shape include undercuts and sharp tips, which can be machined by a special diamond blade, which enters the material, forms a chip, and exits. An analytical model to predict the shape of the incipient chip and of the formed grove as a function of the material properties and of the cutting parameters is provided. The main scientific merit of the current work is to approach theoretically, numerically, and experimentally the very early phase of the cutting tool penetration for new sustainable machining and micro-machining processes.

Energy efficiency subject has been gaining importance in maritime sector. The compressed air is a valuable energy source in operational manner, by the reason of intrinsic lack of efficiency in pressurization process. Operational pressure and leakage rate are the major variables which affect operational efficiency of the system. This study aims to reveal potential energy saving for the compressed air system. To this end, several pressure ranges, 29-30 bars to 14-18 bars, and different leakage rates 2.4% to 45% are evaluated. After the data was obtained from ships, thermodynamic calculations had been carried out. Optimization of pressure saves 47.3% in daily power requirement, 58,2% in compressed air unit cost, 18.4 and 57.4 tons of reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in a year respectively. High leakage rates can cause 2.7 times more power and fuel consumption. Finally, operating load, as an important indicator of compressor, makes imperfections identifiable.

This paper deals with energy audit procedure implemented on only Serbian car manufacturer 'Zastava Automobili'. Based on the results of energy auditing and performed technological and economical feasibility studies several energy saving measures were proposed. The measures are related to different energy sources: steam, hot water, compressed air, electricity, and water. Such energy efficiency programs reduce energy costs and increase production profitability of the factory.

Existing literature perceived Economic, Social and Environmental (ESE) factors as three key drivers of Sustainable Manufacturing Practice (SMP). ICT is not considered as a driving factor, but only as a tool that supports the achievement of SMP. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of ICT in achieving SMP in South Africa. A systematic literature review was conducted. The Google Scholar search engine was used to retrieve 1,352 articles that were analysed in this study. Themes and constructs were analysed based on the scope of the study. The findings revealed that South African manufacturing stakeholders are leveraging the advancement of ICT such as Artificial Intelligence and smart production systems to drive SMP through reduced waste and optimisation of resources. Also, the findings revealed that ICT plays a significant role that warrant its consideration as a fourth factor that drives SMP. This study emphasised the role of ICT as a driver in achieving SMP and presents the ESET model (ESE with the addition of Technology) to support the argument that ICT is a major driving factor for SMP. Understanding the role of ICT can influence how the issues of SMP are addressed and stakeholders can rethink strategies for SMP. Further empirical studies with a broader scope are encouraged because the review process and the scope of this study limits its generalisability

Chongqing weather conditions as the representative, energy simulation software DesT-c Chongqing office building energy simulation analysis, simulated natural building under different ventilation conditions at room temperature, the energy consumption of building cooling load and air-conditioning system changes, with an emphasis on energy-saving effect of the night ventilation; The study showed that in Chongqing reasonable use of ventilation reduce building natural room temperature to a certain extent; Sensitive indicators of building air conditioning energy consumption than the heating energy consumption of ventilation was significantly; Night ventilation when the number of ventilators is less than 5 times / h, the energy saving effect is very significant.
