Research on personality variables and consumption of health services in actively employed people or retirees has been extensive, but the group of pre-retirees has hardly been studied. This work attempts to determine the mental health and use of health resources of the three groups, hypothesizing that, as the group of pre-retirees does not receive the social stigma of work exclusion, it will present better mental health. A sample of 1332 Spanish participants aged between 51 and 69 years was randomly chosen, and various personality tests were applied, and consumption of healthcare resources was determined. Pairwise analysis of the three work situations using binary logistic regressions showed that pre-retirees present better mental health, although there were no differences in the consumption of healthcare resources. The implications of this study for the creation of health promotion policies targeting older people, depending specifically on their employment status, are discussed.

Abstract Background Reddit is a highly visited social news and discussion website where individuals anonymously ask questions, post opinions and share experiences, which provide a valuable pool of publicly available data. Our objective was to systematically search and analyze threads on the social news website, Reddit, to understand experiences of individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) regarding their mental health. Methods We conducted a patient-oriented descriptive qualitative study. We identified threads from two subreddits, “r/Thritis” and “r/Rheumatoid”, using keywords such as “mood”, “mental health”, “stressed”, “depressed”, “anxious” over a 1-year period between June 2018 and June 2019. For included threads, we extracted the title, original post, and corresponding comments and responses. We applied thematic analysis using an inductive approach. Results Of 81 threads identified, we included 27. We identified four themes: 1) Navigating the management of RA explores how the physical impacts of the disease, lack of health resources/support and the complexity of medications affect mental health; 2) Experiencing impact on relationships and social isolation includes experiencing misconceptions of RA, feeling misunderstood and feeling guilt; 3) Experiencing loss, touches on the helplessness brought by challenges with performing self-defining activities such as self-care, work, and childbearing/parenting; and finally, 4) Experiencing emotional struggles captures how tension between fighting through and despair has led some to suicide ideation and thoughts of death. Conclusions Online forums and communities such as Reddit have created opportunities for individuals with RA to share experiences on mental health matters, which they may not necessarily be able to share with others.

Misconceptions regarding the cause(s) of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has led to a number of prejudices against those with such diagnoses. A fear of being the object of prejudicial attitudes and behaviors leaves many individuals concerned about the social stigma of a STI diagnosis. This, in turn, may leave people unwilling to get tested or hesitant to disclose their diagnosis to others, which may fuel the spread of such infections. In addition to the numerous medical concerns associated with STIs, the psychological consequences of STIs are notable as well. Understanding the stigma related to STIs is an important step towards improving the mental health of people with such diagnoses. This chapter provides the reader with an overview of STI diagnoses, and an explanation of their physical and mental health consequences. The chapter continues by examining the three types of stigma as well as their components. Finally, the chapter offers a number of suggestions regarding how to combat STI stigma, which may be extrapolated to combat other forms of stigma affecting mental health.

Abstract Study question The aim was to assess the prevalence of self-reported symptoms of depression and anxiety and the moderating factors influencing mental symptoms during the COVID–19 pandemic. Summary answer Endometriosis patients were at risk of developing mental disorders during the pandemic. Associated risk factors were: reduction of the social network and the employment status. What is known already Endometriosis is a disease affecting up to 10% of women of fertile age. The leading symptoms are sub- or infertility and chronic pain. Additionally, the psychological impact on womeńs life is enormous. Women with endometriosis show higher rates of depression, anxiety and emotional distress, and these alterations in mental health were associated with the presence of pain rather than with the diagnosis of endometriosis. Additionally, a higher level of depression was observed in women with endometriosis. Study design, size, duration To assess the impact of the government-imposed social distancing or quarantine on mental health, an online questionnaire was placed on internet platforms of endometriosis patients support groups between 6th and 27th April 2020. Data collection and analysis were performed anonymously. Recruitment was conducted via a direct link to the survey and an invitation to participate was distributed via the internet platforms of patients support groups. Participants/materials, setting, methods 274 participants answered the Patient Health Questionnaire for Depression and Anxiety (PHQ–4), which screens for depression (PHQ–2), anxiety (GAD–2) and the level of psychological distress (PHQ–4). PHQ–2 and GAD–2 scores ≥ 3 are cut-off points between normal range and probable cases of mental disorders. A PHQ–4 score above 6 is indicative for severe symptoms. We used descriptive statistics to describe the study population. Correlates of depression and anxiety were identified using multivariate logistic regressions. Main results and the role of chance We showed that depression and anxiety were highly prevalent in endometriosis patients during the pandemic: 46.7% and 48.2% of participants showed scale scores of ≥ 3 on the PHQ–2 and GAD–2 scales, respectively. The mean PHQ–4 score was 5.72 (SD = 3.21), thus endometriosis patients were achieving significantly higher PHQ–4 sores (p < 0.001) than participants of a previously published study of the representative German population. Risk factors for higher probability of depressive disorders were the employment status (being employed, OR 2.890, p < 0.001), an important or severe reduction of the social network (OR 2.02, p < 0.05), having continuous pain (OR 1.83, p < 0.05) and high level of dysmenorrhea prior to the pandemic (OR 2.106, p < 0.05). Risk factors for higher probability of anxiety were the employment status (being employed, OR 2.697, p < 0.001), an important or severe reduction of the social network (OR 3.038, p < 0.01), and high level of dysmenorrhea prior to the pandemic (OR 1.750, p < 0.05). Endometriosis patients were at higher risk for developing mental health problems. The effective use of brief screening measures, such as PHQ–4, can be widely implemented even in the busy outpatient care of general practitioners and gynecologists and may help to reduce morbidity. Limitations, reasons for caution We used self-reports for assessment of anxiety and depression and those are susceptible to response bias, such as giving socially desirable responses. Moreover, as PHQ–4 is only a screening tool, the diagnosis must be confirmed in accordance to the appropriate DSM–V criteria. Wider implications of the findings: A better understanding of potential mental problems in endometriosis patients during stressful events, such as the COVID–19 pandemic or other comparable difficult environmental or social circumstances, is crucial for providing an optimal patient centered care in cases of upcoming stressful events. This paper seeks to highlight some of the key issues of the social stigma associated with mental health-related issues, to present examples of some existing anti-stigma concepts found within mental health literature and, in turn, to begin to suggest ways in which the personal and social experience of participation within community music activities may provide a means of challenging and resisting such stigma. The research involved a literature review of existing theoretical concepts surrounding mental health stigma interventions and sought to link such concepts with examples from community music and music sociology, examining concepts such as identity construction, removal and refurbishment activities and tachytopian experiences. The work of the Me2/Orchestra (Vermont, USA) is presented as a case study, with use of some supporting preliminary interview data. While hypothetical in nature at present, the article discusses the potential of community music for addressing and erasing mental health stigma.

Using primary data from the Assessing the Social Consequences of COVID-19 study (N=1,647), we examined how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the stress levels (i.e., pre-pandemic vs. during-pandemic stress) of women with and without coresiding minor children, paying special attention to the moderating role of women’s employment status. Results from OLS regression models show that following the pandemic outbreak, among women who worked full-time, mothers reported smaller stress increases than non-mothers. Among part-time and non-employed women, mothers and non-mothers experienced similar levels of stress increase. Changes in women’s work hours and employment status, following the pandemic onset, had limited impacts on the patterns of stress level changes. This study contributes to research on parenting and health by showing that during times of crisis, full-time employment may play a protective role for mother’s mental health, but may not buffer the mental health deterioration of women not raising children.

Psychiatric services in Japan have been dominantly hospital-based, and the largest task for psychiatry in Japan today remains the deinstitutionalization of patients, rather than early intervention. Individuals with mental health problems and their families are often reluctant to seek help for various reasons, including a lack of knowledge regarding the features and treatability of mental disorders. These obstacles may explain the long duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) and the social stigma of mental disorders in Japan. The concept of an at-risk mental state (ARMS)/prodromal state might not yet be widely recognized among Japanese psychiatrists. Competency in treating and diagnosing mild and moderate disorders should be integrated into training for the primary care specialty, and building the community-based network for early detection is the key strategy in Japan.
