Industrialized construction (IC) as a promising construction mode has been increasingly adopted in China due to its advantages of enhancing productivity and reducing the labor intensiveness in the construction industry. An objective and systematic evaluation of the IC mode is essential by clarifying the current weak areas in application and improving project performance. The meager existing studies have considered evaluating the IC maturity of prefabricated construction projects from the perspective of project governance. This study proposed an industrialized construction maturity model (ICMM) involving organizational enablers by employing the framework of the well-established European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) excellence model. The evaluation indicator system consisting of two parts (i.e., “enablers” and “results”) were abstracted by a literature review and expert interviews. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) approach was used to weight the indicators. The maturity of IC projects was rated as four levels (i.e., initial, upgraded, integrated, and optimal levels). The proposed ICMM was validated by conducting a multi-case study, four typical building projects that adopted prefabricated construction techniques in Shanghai were selected and evaluated by the proposed ICMM. Results showed that the ICMM can objectively and comprehensively realize the status quo of IC projects and help managers to identify weak areas of the current IC projects and performance improvement paths from the perspective of project governance. The ICMM was also evaluated to demonstrate its applicability and reliability through expert interviews.

The supplier selection problem has been discussed in literature within the supply chain management subject and it is extremely important due to its impact on the entire supply chain configuration, strategy and performance. This work presents a decision model based on the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process method and its application in a real case of maintenance supplier selection in a large Brazilian railway operator. Eight criteria were adopted - technical capacity, financial status, relationship, operations management, security management, infrastructure, historic performance and costs - for evaluating five potential suppliers. In the case study, both first and second ranked suppliers by the method have been selected by the company for providing the services and the model was adopted as a standard procedure within the organization for contracts over US$ 300,000.

This chapter is concerned with the implementation of The Capability Maturity Model in the organization of study. In this application, we define measures of organization process improvement and we propose correlations between them and organizational cognition. Among these measures are included organization process maturity, capability, and performance. Therefore, we define correlations between organizational cognition and organization process maturity, and also between organizational cognition and organization process capability and performance. From such correlations, we also define an association between organizational cognition and organizational learning. Hence, we outline new directions to the development of approaches to assess, to evaluate and to measure the degree of organizational cognition from appraisal methods of The Capability Maturity Model and of other organization process improvement models. Moreover, Chapter IX is complemented by Appendix I which summarizes concepts and characteristics about the five maturity levels of The Capability Maturity Model.

In the field of engineering and construction, unqualified construction quality, time delays, cost more than expected phenomena to occur. Because of these characteristics such as its large-scale construction projects, long cycle, the production of single and complex, there is greater risk than the production of general products, the risk increases the difficulty of construction project management, operating costs and the possibility of potential losses, therefore, risk management emerged and become an increasingly important integral part of project management. In this paper, fuzzy analytic hierarchy be used to construction project risk assessment, and to order the sort of each risk in order to prevent significant risks. On an actual project - the new stadium construction in Weifang City risk management case study, the reduction of risk of project failure is expected, but also the project is hoped for other industries to provide some reference for risk management.

This paper, based on the strong sustainable principles, is derived from Jinan Citys statistics yearbook and statistical bulletin materials. The author constructed the environmental indicator system and socioeconomic indicator system respectively with the help of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and calculated Jinan Citys sustainability indices for 2003-2010. The results show that the environmental sustainable development level in Jinan city was average in 2003-2005 and 2007; however, in 2006, 2008-2010 it achieved a high level. The socioeconomic sustainable development level in Jinan City was high in 2003-2007, and was very high in 2008-2010. The results of the analyses suggest that Jinan City should improve its air quality and strengthen its environmental investment. It is also urgent that Jinan improve citizens livelihood, especially for housing and pension insurance projects.

The implementation of ethical responsibility of construction projects is impacted by many external factors. According to resource dependence theory, this paper constructs the indicator system of external factors influencing the ethical responsibility of construction projects, conducts quantitative analysis on it by means of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), defines the five indicators (namely the perfect degree of laws and regulations, information symmetry, equality in status of project stakeholders, governmental supervision degree, and justice degree of contracts) as key influencing factors, and sets forth corresponding measures from three aspects aiming at the impact of the abovementioned key factors on the ethical responsibility of projects, in order to form an external restriction system for the ethical responsibility of projects, to realize the unification of self-discipline and heteronomy of project organizations, and to promote the realization of ethical responsibility objective of projects.

Although some studies have used or developed different types of metrics to assess construction productivity in the existing literature, few of them investigated those metrics systematically and the differences between assessment results. This study examined the various types of metrics used in the assessment of the productivity of construction projects. First, a literature review was conducted first to identify prevailing productivity metrics at four levels, namely trade, project, company, and industry. Then, the questionnaire was developed and disseminated to 53 Singapore-based construction companies for data collection. Subsequently, non-parametric statistical tests were conducted to analyze the data collected by the questionnaire. Results showed that the top five metrics in terms of usage frequency and relative importance were “constructability score”, “buildable design score”, “square meter of built-up floor area per man-day”, “square meter per dollar”, and “output per worker.” In addition, results showed that differences existed in the assessment results when productivity metrics at different levels were used to conduct the same measurement. This is the first study to explore the most widely used metrics in productivity assessments of construction projects and investigate possible differences in assessment results. This study could help the authorities to review, evaluate, and modify the productivity metrics used in practice. Thus, this study is beneficial to the practice as well.

PurposeSelecting a suitable contract to outsource construction projects is an ongoing concern for project managers and organizational directors. This study aims to propose a comprehensive model to manage the risks of outsourced construction project contracts.Design/methodology/approachTo employ the proposed model, firstly, the types of contracts and risks in the organization should be identified, then, to prioritize the contracts, the identified risks are considered as criteria. After receiving the experts' opinions, the best–worst method (BWM) integrated with grey relation analysis (GRA) method was used to prioritize the contracts. BWM and GRA are multi-criteria decision-making methods with different approaches and applications. In the current study, BWM has been employed to calculate the weights of criteria because it has better performance than other methods such as the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). After calculating the weights of criteria, the GRA method has been utilized for ranking the alternatives.FindingsAccording to the results obtained from the case study, the cost plus award fee contract is the most suitable alternative for outsourcing construction projects. The proposed methodology can be practically applied through different types of the projects such as construction or “engineering, procurement and construction”.Originality/valueTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a conceptual model has been proposed to select an appropriate contract for construction projects. Also, for the first time, the BWM integrated with GRA method has been used to prioritize project contracts based on the potential risks. The proposed model can contribute to project managers for selecting a suitable contract with the least risk in construction projects.

The distribution of soil nutrients and soil productivity of farmland in Ledong Li Autonomous County (Ledong County) are studied. By forming an indicator system for assessing farmland productivity, which includes three sub-goals of site conditions, soil physicochemical properties and soil profile configuration, and applying Analytic Hierarchy Process to determine the weight sum, the farmland productivities are estimated. The results indicate that soil nutrients and farmland productivity are in moderate level but unevenly distributed in each Town of Ledong County. The distribution of farmland productivity is closely related with topography and river distribution, where irrigations and slopes are main determining factors of uneven distributions of soil nutrients and farmland productivity in study area. Soil acidification of surface layers in tropical areas was significant in last 30 years. Ways to fertilize should be altered in order to prevent soil acidifications and improve its farmland productivity.

Contractors need to assess their capability to implement corporate entrepreneurship (CE), in order to develop the proper corporate strategy based on CE. This study is aimed to assess the capability level of contractors to implement CE using corporate entrepreneurship capability model (CECM). CECM has been developed based on the concept of Capability Maturity Model (CMM). The capability level of contractors to implement CE is assessed using 21 indicators which are classified into five dimensions: autonomy, competitive aggressiveness, innovativeness, proactiveness and risk-taking. CECM divides the capability of contractors to implement CE into four levels: initial, repeatable, managed and optimized. This study carried out a case study of 2 big contractors in Indonesia. The data was collected using a questionnaire and then an arithmetic mean of each indicator was calculated to determine the capability level of contractors to implement CE. The case study found the highest level of capability to implement CE is reached in two different indicators: innovativeness and proactiveness, meanwhile the lowest level for both contractors is risk-taking. This study also found the capability level of both contractors are at a level between managed and optimized.
