Understanding the crop growth and yield response to variable irrigation and the relationship between crop eco-physiological and morphological parameters is critical for identifying a balanced irrigation management strategy and developing decision support systems for early detection and information for on-ground decisions. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of variable irrigation treatments on dry bean [Phaseolus vulgaris L.] growth traits (plant height, leaf area index, normalized difference vegetation index), seed yield (SY), and yield components (pods plant−1, seeds pod−1, 100-seed weight (SW), and pod harvest index (PHI)) and to develop empirical models between dry bean growth and environmental conditions, SY, and yield components. Five irrigation treatments i.e., FIT (full irrigation treatment), 125% FIT, 75% FIT, 50% FIT, and 25% FIT were investigated. Water deficit at the beginning of the crop growth [vegetative growth (V1-V2) stage], dramatically reduced dry bean growth and development and resulted in a significant reduction in SY. However, the degree to which vegetative growth and SY was reduced depends on the weather conditions. Reducing irrigation by 25% below FIT resulted in an average reduction of 30% in SY. This reduction in SY was significantly correlated with a decline in pods plant−1 and SW. Moreover, the empirical models between growth traits and growing degree days (GDD) have a strong correlation, while growth traits and SY and yield components are moderately correlated. The data and empirical models presented in this research provide valuable information in predicting and estimating dry bean SY in-season and allow for corrective management decisions.

A field study was conducted during 3 yr to determine the growth and yield response of Pinto, Pink Red and Great Northern dry beans to various doses of imazethapyr. Imazethapyr was applied postemergence at 0, 25, 50 75 100, 150, and 200 g ha−1 to each class of dry bean. Results indicated that these four classes of dry beans responded similarly to imazethapyr. Dry bean injury increased and yields were reduced as dose of imazethapyr increased. At the proposed use dose of 50 g ha−1, imazethapyr reduced yield by 5 to 6%. Imazethapyr at 100 g ha−1 reduced dry bean yield by 10 to 12% and delayed maturity by 3 to 4 d. Benefits of superior weed control attained with imazethapyr should be weighed against potential crop injury when growers consider using imazethapyr in their dry bean weed management programs. Penurunan kualitas tanah karena akumulasi penggunaan pupuk kimia berdampak pada penurunan hasil tanaman buncis tegak. Teknik budidaya organik dengan menggunakan media tanam campuran tanah, arang sekam, dan cocopeat serta penggunaan pupuk guano dilakukan sebagai upaya alternatif peningkatan produksi buncis. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji pengaruh dosis pupuk guano dan berbagai jenis media tanam terhadap pertumbuhan dan hasil tanaman buncis tegak (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Penelitian dilaksanakan dari April hingga Mei 2020 di Desa Cileunyi Kulon, Kecamatan Cileunyi, Kabupaten Bandung. Rancangan percobaan berupa Rancangan Acak Kelompok (RAK) faktorial dua faktor. Faktor pertama yaitu dosis pupuk guano terdiri atas 4 taraf: kontrol, 5 t ha-1, 10 t ha-1, dan 15 t ha-1. Faktor kedua yaitu media tanam dengan 5 taraf: tanah (kontrol), arang sekam padi, cocopeat, tanah + arang sekam padi, dan tanah + cocopeat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan interaksi antara dosis pupuk guano dengan media tanam pada tinggi tanaman 28 HST. Dosis pupuk guano berkorelasi positif dengan variabel pertumbuhan tanaman dengan dosis terbaik yaitu 15 t ha-1. Media tanam campuran tanah dan arang sekam menghasilkan tanaman dengan tinggi tanaman, bobot polong segar, dan bobot polong kering tertinggi di antara semua perlakuan. Pupuk guano dapat di aplikasikan pada berbagai media tanam untuk menghasilkan pertumbuhan tanaman buncis yang optimal.AbstractThe decline in soil quality cause by chemical fertilizer affected to the growth and yield of bush bean. Organic farming using guano fertilizer and combination of soil, husk charcoal, and cocopeat as the planting media can be used as an alternative technology to increase bush bean production. This study aimed to determine the effect of guano fertilizer dosage and various type of growing media on growth and yield of bush bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). This study was conducted from April to May 2020 at Cikandang village, Cileunyi Kulon, Cileunyi, Bandung. The experimental design used was factorial randomized block design with two factors. The first factor was dosage of guano fertilizer consisted of 4 levels i.e. control, 5 t ha-1, 10 t ha-1, and 15 t ha-1. The second factor was growing media with 5 levels i.e. soil (control), husk charcoal, cocopeat, soil + husk charcoal, and soil + cocopeat. The results showed the interaction between dosage of guano fertilizer and growing media on plant height in 28 days after planting. The dosage of guano fertilizer had a positive correlation with plant growth traits, and 15 t ha-1 as the best dosage for bush bean growth and yield. The media soil + husk charcoal produced plants with the highest plant height, fresh pod weight, and dry pod weight among all treatments. Guano fertilizer can be applied to various growing media to produce the optimal bush bean growth.

Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cv. Etna, a dry bean variety, and cv. Hystyle, a snap bean variety, were grown at 400 and 1200 μmol·m-2·s-1 CO2 to determine the effects of CO2 enrichment on plant growth and stomatal conductance. Plants were grown in controlled environment chambers for 70 days at each CO2 level using nutrient film technique hydroponics. An 18-h light/6-h dark photoperiod was maintained for each test, with a corresponding thermoperiod of 28 °C/24 °C and constant 65% RH. Diurnal stomatal conductance measurements were made with a steady-state porometer at 28 days after planting (DAP) and 49 DAP. As expected, plant growth and yield was consistently increased for each cultivar when plants were grown at 1200 μmol·m-2·s-1 CO2 compared to 400 μmol·m-2·s-1 CO2. Stomatal conductance measured during the light period showed an expected decrease for each cultivar when grown at 1200 μmol·m-2·s-1 CO2 compared to 400 μmol·m-2·s-1 CO2. However, during the dark period, stomatal conductance was higher for each cultivar grown at 1200 μmol·m-2·s-1 CO2. These results suggest a stomatal opening effect in the dark when plants are exposed to enriched levels of CO2. Tests are underway to investigate the effects of CO2 levels greater than 1200 μmol·m-2·s-1 on the growth and stomatal conductance of bean.

This study was conducted to determine cultivars which grown at Van Gurpinar ecological conditions and their some important agricultural and plant properties in 2013 year in center of Gurpinar. In the study was used 13 cultivars which officially registered such as Bulduk, Akın, Göynük, Karacaşehir 90, Arslan, Özdemir, Önceler, Battal, Zülbiye, Göksun, Akman 98, Akdağ and Güngör and 2 genotypes (Gevaş 1 and Gevaş 2). The trial was conducted by using randomized complete blocks design with the three replications. In the study were investigated sowing times on plant height, first pod height, numbers of branches, numbers of pod per plant and numbers of seed per plant, numbers of seed per pod, seed yield per unit area, harvest index, biological yield and 1000 seed weight. While the highest seed yield per area was obtained from Bulduk varieties with 360.4 kg da-1, the lowest seed yield per area was obtained from Önceler with 201.6 kg da-1.
