Urban mining by recyclers represents a positive environmental impact as well as being part of the waste management chain. This paper analyzes the contribution of waste pickers in the city of Cuenca in Ecuador and the conditions of their activity. This research has a two-fold objective. First, it calculates the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the substitution of virgin raw material in the production process by using recycled urban waste. The second objective is to conduct a socioeconomic analysis of the workers involved in the urban waste sector. Cuenca (Ecuador) is the main city used for this case study, thanks to the accessibility of a rich database built from the survey conducted by the NGO Alliance for Development. The information contained in this survey facilitates the identification of potential consumers of the waste industry. This study uses Clean Development Mechanism methodology. Finally, this work proposes a theoretical model for solid waste management, applied to the city, following the principles of the circular economy.

Municipal solid waste management (MSWM) has emerged as one of the greatest challenges of improvement in Ethiopia. This study is conducted in Hawassa City, one of the fastest urbanizing cities in Ethiopia, to assess the existing solid waste management (SWM) practices and challenges observed in the city. The study relies on a case study research design. Sufficient data was gathered through rigorous interviews and field observations. It was also supported by quantitative data gathered from published and unpublished documents. The findings of the study revealed that the current SWM practices of Hawassa City are ineffective and inefficient. The major factors that contributed to the existing ineffective and inefficient SWM system in the City are insufficient collection coverage, improper storage, transportation and disposal, limited budget allocation, absence of standards for licensing private service providers, weak capacity of the municipality to enforce by-laws and create awareness to the community.

Environmental Management Measure (EMM) model will be a well-designed approach for sustainable and effective solid waste management in Dhaka city. Environmental Management Measure (EMM) model has three instruments such as economic, regulatory and suasive which proposed in this paper. This paper discusses the situation of solid waste in Dhaka city as well as it offers environmental policy recommendations to concerned authorities including effective instruments to minimize the polluting behavior of individuals and industries and to recover the cost of pollution in the city. To improve solid waste management in Dhaka city, a combination of economic, regulatory and suasive instrument are recommended. The findings of the study will be helpful for policy maker, planner, implementer and other stakeholders towards adopting more effective strategy for management of solid waste in Dhaka city. This study analyzes various regulations on urban waste management, with emphasis in recycling activities. How regulatory frameworks from the national level translates to the city level, and the extent of its implementation are examined through field observations in the city of Semarang as a case study. Based on the study of regulations and policy documents, this study suggests that recycling is found in various policy domains, not only those concerning waste management but also in the environment, industry, company’s limited liability and infrastructure domains. This study highlights two main problems in recycling namely: policy idealism and approach dualism. From these two basic problems, this study recommends a strategy for strengthening the capacity and collaboration of related parties as one of keys to increasing the capacity of waste recycling, especially in urban areas in Indonesia.

Prioritizing waste prevention, reuse, recycling and recovery of materials and energy over disposal through landfilling, offers the waste hierarchy approach (WHA) a sustainable pathway to the management of municipal solid wastes (MSW) and realization of a circular economy. The concept is now part of the legal framework in some developing countries and its implementation has been credited for addressing waste problems linked to high rates of economic growth and urbanization. Even though Africa Vision 2063 prioritizes improvements in urban waste recycling in the continent, much of the MSW generated on the continent is disposed through landfilling evidencing weak adoption of the WHA. This article contends that because WHA is not adequately incorporated in the current legal framework at national and sub-national levels of government, Kenya is unlikely to achieve a circular economy approach necessary for realizing sustainable waste management. Operationalization of the WHA is impeded by inadequate financing, weak institutional coordination, gaps in private sector and informal actors’ engagement and risks associated with investments in large-scale waste recovery initiatives. It is therefore necessary for Kenya to elaborate the WHA in its legal framework at both national and county level, while ensuring adequate financing, involvement of informal actors, incentivization of private sector and adoption of waste planning procedures.
