Seaweed is a source of multipurpose bioresources, providing millions of dollars to the world’s economy and performing various ecosystem services that aid in maintaining marine balance, reducing eutrophication, providing nutrients and mitigating atmospheric CO2. In this context, this study aims to evaluate the potentialities of the cultivation of the Crassiphycus birdiae seaweed on the eastern coast of the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN), Brazil, considering the physical and environmental aspects. Estimates concerning suitable areas and their productive potential for the Biomass, Bioethanol, Biofertilizer and Agar bioproducts were carried out. These estimates were based on the Modular Ferry System (MFS) installed on the state coast. Suitable cultivation areas were determined by applying an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and change detection analysis based on physical and infrastructure factors, such as areas sheltered by winds, sea currents and waves, proximity to seaweed banks, road infrastructure and socioeconomic and environmental factors. Areas identified as suitable for seaweed cultivation totaled 2227.59 ha in area, with a productive potential of 195 thousand tons of fresh biomass/year, over two million liters of ethanol/year and about 43 tons of agar/year. These findings demonstrate that the northeastern coast of Brazil has the potential to generate employment and income through seaweed cultivation, stimulating the coastal region’s development in a sustainable manner.

Brazil has shown thousands of incidents every year, which the State of Rio Grande do Sul is part of a significant portion that suffers mainly, from disasters related to heavy rainfalls. Thus, this paper presents a diagnostic of the urban area's vulnerability as regards landslides in the medium city of Santa Maria, located in the central area of the State. To determine the degree of vulnerability it was applied remote sensing, GIS, geoprocessing, and multicriteria decision analysis. By means of thematic maps of hypsometry, slope, pedology, and soil use, it was applied to the algebra operation of maps and analytic hierarchy process. As a result, it was obtained the levels of potential environmental fragility (FAP) and emerging environmental fragility (FAE). It was concluded that although less than 15% of urban or no urbanized areas are in hazardous areas, the urban perimeter is mostly in transitional areas and preventive measures should be implemented to avoid possible disruption of stability.

Support for the development of new technology-based business is a major challenge in Brazil. One reason is the change of the paradigm of an economy based on supply of commodities to an economy of developing and offering technology. In this environment, business incubators are presented as a key player in this process. However, incubators lack of infrastructure available for the technological development of products, as entrepreneurs begin to demand something beyond basic infrastructure. This article aims to classify research and development infrastructure models, based on the degree of importance earned by entrepreneurs belonging to incubators of technology-based companies in the state of Parana. An extensive literature review identified seven research infrastructure development models and discrete manufacturing products. These models were then classified by their features and practices. Following, a hierarchy was built, using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Based on this hierarchy, an electronic questionnaire was designed and it was applied to 115 entrepreneurs belonging to 15 incubators of technology-based company, all located in the state of Parana. The responses were used for the construction of the weights of criteria based on the characteristics and analyzed practices. Finally, seven models were classified according to the AHP, providing incubator managers with the best options of laboratory models, according to the characteristics and needs.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose a new multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) technique to determine the priority of renewable power plants construction conceding technical, economic, social, political and environmental aspects. Design/methodology/approach First, a comprehensive set of 5 main criteria of technical, economic, social, political and environmental are considered for renewable power plants construction, each including 5 sub-criteria (a total of 25 sub-criteria). Then, the analytic hierarchy process method is used to determine the weight of the criteria. Finally, a new MCDM technique proposed to prioritize the construction of renewable power plants, named TOPKOR. To demonstrate the capability of the proposed method, a case study is conducted in which six types of renewable power plants are evaluated. Findings Comparison results of the main criteria weights show that the “economic” [0.403], “environmental” [0.296] and “technical” [0.17] aspects have the highest importance, respectively. The results also show that solar, hydroelectric and wave and tidal power plants have the highest priority for construction, respectively. Research limitations/implications The result of this research could be useful for related decision makers in construction of the renewable power plants to have a comprehensive set of criteria in technical, economic, social, political and environmental aspects in their decision process. Originality/value This research provides a comprehensive set of criteria and sub-criteria for prioritizing the renewable power plants. Moreover, a new hybrid MCDM technique is introduced for prioritizing the construction of power plants.

Using agricultural preservation priorities derived from an analytical hierarchy process by 23 conservation experts from 18 agencies in the state of Delaware, this research uses weighted benefit measures to evaluate the historical success of Delaware's agricultural protection fund, which spent nearly $100 million in its first decade. This research demonstrates how these operation research techniques can be used in concert to address relevant conservation questions. Results suggest that the state's sealed-bid-offer auction, which determines the yearly conservation selections, is superior to benefit-targeting approaches frequently employed by conservation organizations, but is inferior to the optimization technique of binary linear programming that could have provided additional benefits to the state, such as 12,000 additional acres worth an estimated $25 million.

The maintenance way of armored vehicle engine is hard time maintenance and breakdown maintenance in our army. So, the situation of lack or excess of maintenance is often existing in armored vehicle engine, and leading to potential safety hazard and wasting of resources. Condition based maintenance, which based on advanced detect and diagnosis technology, is a good way to solve the problems mentioned above. So, parameter tables which can completely reflect the state of armored vehicle engine is set up in this paper, and analytic hierarchy process and fuzzy synthetic evaluation method is used to scientific assess the state of vehicle engine. The computational process is demonstrated by analysis the experiment data of an armored vehicle engine. The work gives the foundation for condition based maintenance of armored vehicle engine.

In recent years, wind power in Brazil has emerged as an alternative to diversify the country′s energy mix and minimize the emission of pollutants derived from fossil fuels. The state of Rio Grande do Norte, in the Brazilian Northeast, has considerable potential for the generation of wind energy due to the occurrence of strong winds in many areas along the coast and in the interior of the state, in places with higher altitudes. However, wind energy, despite being considered clean and renewable, can cause environmental impacts in those places. Thus, the present study analyzed the perception of environmental impacts caused by the installation of wind farms in the agricultural areas of Northeast Brazil. The study was carried out in the municipality of Serra do Mel, in the western region of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, based on a survey of local farmers. The study concluded that farmers live without major problems and without apparent conflicts with wind farms but have little knowledge about the environmental impacts. In the perception of most farmers, there are few negative environmental impacts, and those that exist are barely noticed or still do not cause damage to most farmers in the region.

Transformers state comprehensive assessment to provide the basis for the repair and maintenance of power transformers .Based on the fault tree analysis (FTA) to find out the impact of the failure of the power transformer factors, and the establishment of the index system to assess the state of the power transformer, application 3 scale analytic hierarchy process assessment model for the establishment of the state of the transformer , and thus the transformer state is divided into five levels. Through the classification of the more conducive to the staff to understand the transformer condition, reasonable arrangements for the maintenance plan .Case analysis to prove, based on the comprehensive assessment of the fault tree and power transformer condition of the Analytic Hierarchy Process method is reasonable and effective.
