It is difficult for curriculum reform to achieve sustainable success without support from teachers in the front line. The authors of this paper investigated teacher factors behind the successful implementation of a reformed instructional model, the Dao Jiang Ping (DJP) model, in China. This study is part of a longitudinal project (2012–2017) that reported the level of DJP implementation and explored factors that influence teachers’ implementation. This paper mainly focuses on the latter. Six teachers were examined to look for reasons behind their different levels of DJP implementation. The theory of planned behavior (TPB), which has been widely used to explain and predict people’s behavior or intention to perform a behavior, is used as the theoretical framework for the study. Referring to the TPB framework, this study summarized factors into individual factors, perceived social factors and perceived contextual factors. Furthermore, the authors suggest extending the TPB framework by including teachers’ understanding of the reform ideas to facilitate its application in order to explore factors in reform contexts. Lastly, this study discusses several important factors that help teachers to implement new teaching methodologies continually, thus promoting the sustainable implementation of reforms.

Abstract: This study aims to understand how circus teaching happens in the educational context as an extracurricular activity, through the investigation of schools experiences. Methodologically, the research is characterized as a multiple case study, qualitative in nature that included the observation of classes in two private schools with a record in a field diary; interview with five subjects, teachers and coordinators/ directors of the two schools; documentary analysis of educational planning. The results show how circus teaching in the extracurricular context is a field in full development. It is present as a practice with high participation among the students, meanwhile, focused on some circus modalities, aerial and manipulation, due to a non-systematic qualification of the responsible teachers. Teaching is carried out with male and female teachers and was shown as a playful practice, mainly in the initial years, including artistic presentations in both schools, recognizing the expressive dimension of said practice. We note in both cases that the circus has a high educational potential as a possibility in extracurricular teaching, even so, we think that it is still necessary to pay attention to the demand for specific teacher training and in the search for teaching methodologies appropriate to each educational situation.

Purpose – The purpose of this research is to identify key interrelated components of successful, sustained lean transformation. When implemented successfully, lean not only allows for cost reduction while improving quality but it can also position a company to achieve tremendous growth. However, although many companies are attempting to implement lean, only an estimated 2-3 per cent are achieving the desired level of success. Design/methodology/approach – A thorough literature review was conducted and the findings indicated six key constructs that can act as enablers or inhibitors to implementing and sustaining lean. A theoretical framework was developed that integrates these constructs and develops research propositions for each. A multiple-case study analysis was used to test the framework on four companies that have achieved successful lean transformations to validate the model. Findings – Sixteen propositions were supported in all four of the case studies and one proposition was supported in three of the four case studies. Originality/value – This research proposed and tested a model lean transformation on cases drawn from the very small number of companies in the USA that have achieved successful, sustained lean improvement. The case studies represented a broad variety of manufacturing industries, increasing the likelihood of the research being able to be broadly generalized and applied. The model provides a set of related tangible actions that organizations planning to undertake a lean transformation can focus on to help insure successful implementation and sustainment.

In a theory-driven, qualitative, multiple-case study, we examined the implementation of national dementia plans (NDPs) in Denmark, Germany, and Italy to determine how stakeholders involved in implementing the NDPs evaluate contextual factors in light of the World Health Organization’s seven action areas of dementia-focused policy. To analyse the NDPs, we used a driver diagram of large-scale change and conducted both document analysis and semi-structured interviews, after which we performed three-way open coding to analyse the methods. The results show that the implementation of NDPs has increased awareness of dementia in all three countries by positioning the disease as a national public health concern. The study also reveals that resources, the use of change theory, and the monitoring of implementation and fragmentation are crucial factors to consider for countries when implementing NDPs. Although stakeholders find the NDPs useful, many challenges remain for their successful implementation due to the highly limited means for implementation and evaluation. Moreover, present NDPs all lack a communication plan that encompasses all layers of society to address ways of achieving change. Patients with dementia, and their informal caregivers, should be included more in the design, implementation, and evaluation of NDPs in order to improve their usefulness and effectiveness.

Abstract Background There is a growing need to establish new knowledge on healthcare policy implementation that is relevant for both research and practice. Many attempts fail to deliver implemented policy initiates effectively because of the lack of coordination between system levels and different actors own agendas. The aim of this paper is to propose and illustrate an analytical framework providing a multilevel and multi-actor perspective in order to uncover combined difficulties of policy implementation within the context of a public healthcare system. Methods A multiple case study approach for the implementation of disease prevention in four Swedish healthcare regions was used. The selection of cases – regions within Sweden – was made in order to reflect a broad variety of contextual factors that may influence the policy implementation effectiveness. Interviewees consisted of a strategic sample of respondents representing different system levels and logics from each region. The qualitative analysis was based on empirically identified translation strategies by building a logical chain of evidence of the whole implementation process. Results The translation of policy guidelines was theorized and empirically investigated as chains of steps from the evidence-based policy formulated in the national guidelines for disease prevention methods via regional administrative systems into clinical practices. The following thematic areas were investigated: the successive translation of the policy object, consequences of policy reprioritizations, the role of technology in translation and the embedding of policy in clinical practice. Conclusions In successful implementation chains, guidelines are translated by being received and transferred to healthcare administrative systems through various political administrative activities and are then realised in everyday clinical practice. Policy is translated into different parts of the systems successively within the context of a multi-actor, multi-logic framework. Each actor/logic may take on the policy idea, change the route, delay it or even cancel out efforts. Earlier steps in the policy translation chain thus have consequences for later activities.
