Cement slurry segregation has a detrimental impact on the cement matrix efficiency in term of zonal isolation. In this study, synthetic modified phyllosilicate (SMP) dispersant, which is known as laponite RD is suggested to reduce the slurry segregation and enhance the vertical homogeneity of the cement matrix in term of density distribution. Seven cement slurries were prepared with different SMP concentrations using molds with different dimensions based on the targeted test, then cured for 24 h at 140 °C and 3000 psi using a high-pressure and high-temperature curing chamber. After that, the samples’ density distribution was evaluated using a direct density measurement and computer tomography (CT) scan imaging technique, and the effect of SMP on the cement rheological parameters, permeability, and compressive strength and were also evaluated. The performance of SMP was then compared with a commercial dispersant. As a result, 0.3% by weight of cement (BWOC) of SMP is found to considerably reduce the vertical density variation along the cement column to 0.46% compared with a density variation of 4.78% for the slurry with the commercial dispersant. The CT scan images confirmed the vertical homogeneity of the slurry with 0.3% BWOC of SMP. Addition of 0.3% BWOC of SMP increased the yield point of the cement slurry to 60.6 MPa compared with 20.5 MPa for the slurry with 0.25% of the commercial dispersant. Adding 0.3% BWOC of SMP into the cement formulation decreased the permeability by 37.1% compared with the commercial dispersant. The sample with 0.3% BWOC of SMP has a compressive strength of 43.9 MPa.

In deep hydrocarbon development wells, cement slurry with high density is required to effectively balance the high-pressure formations. The increase in the slurry density could be achieved by adding different heavy materials. In this study, the effect of the weighting materials (barite, hematite, and ilmenite) on the properties of Saudi Class G cement matrix of vertical homogeneity, compressive strength, porosity, and permeability was evaluated. Three cement slurries were weighted with barite, hematite, and ilmenite, and cured at 294 °F and 3000 psi for 24 h. All slurries have the same concentration of the different additives except the weighting material. The amount of weighting material used in every slurry was determined based on the targeted density of 18 lbm/gal. The results of this study revealed that the most vertically homogenous cement matrix was the ilmenite-weighted sample with a vertical variation of 17.6% compared to 20.2 and 24.8% for hematite- and barite-weighted cement, respectively. This is attributed to the small particle size of the ilmenite. The medical computerized tomography (CT) scan confirmed that the ilmenite-weighted sample is the most homogeneous, with a narrow range of density variation vertically along the sample. Hematite-weighted cement showed the highest compressive strength of 55.3 MPa, and the barite- and ilmenite-weighted cement compressive strengths are each 18.4 and 36.7% less than the compressive strength of the hematite-weighted cement, respectively. Barite-weighted cement has the lowest porosity and permeability of 6.1% and 18.9 mD, respectively. The maximum particle size of ilmenite used in this study is less than 42 μm to ensure no abrasion effect on the drilling system, and it minimized the solids segregation while maintaining a compressive strength that is higher than the minimum acceptable strength, which is the recommended weighting material for Saudi Class G cement.

The article presents the results of the influence of carbon nanotubes on the mechanical parameters of cement stones under high temperature and pressure conditions (150°C, 90 MPa). The tests used multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with an external diameter of 10–20 nm and a length of 10–30 μm. Cement slurries contained 0.1% of CNTs bwoc (by the weight of cement). Laboratory tests of cement slurries were carried out at the Oil and Gas Institute – National Research Institute. The tests were carried out under conditions of increased pressure and temperature at 150°C, 90 MPa. Cement slurries were prepared on the basis of class G drilling cement. Developing recipes were guided by the requirements to be met by cement slurry for the cementing of casing in the conditions of high temperature and reservoir pressures. The densities of tested slurries ranged from 1900 kg/m3 to 2250 kg/m3 (slurries with the addition of hematite). The cement slurries were tested for density, fluidity, rheological parameters, filtration and thickening time. Compressive strength tests and measuring adhesion were carried out after 2, 7, 14 and 28 days. Cement slurry recipes with very good technological parameters were developed and after curing (after 28 days of hydration) had very high values of compressive strength, reaching up to 45 MPa. Cements were characterized by high values of adhesion to pipes reaching up 7 MPa after 28 days. The research showed significant information about possible applications of carbon nanotubes to modify the cement slurry under conditions of high temperature and pressure. The conducted tests confirmed that the addition of even small amounts of CNTs improves the mechanical parameters of the cement stone compared to the base sample without such addition, and also reduces the thickening time of cement slurries and reduces filtration. It is investigated that CNTs addition increases the viscosity and yield point of cement slurry. As a result, slurries with the addition of MWCNTs will more effectively displace the mud from the borehole and significantly affect the quality of cementation.

Drilling ever deeper, and thus in increasingly difficult conditions, is associated with restrictive requirements that must be met by cement slurries. This implies the need to use advanced, innovative measures that will significantly improve the performance parameters of the cement slurry and cement stone. Due to its unique properties, an admixture of nanosilica improves the properties of the cement stone and allows for appropriate zone insulation. The article presents the results of strength tests of cement stone samples with the addition of silica nanoparticles deposited in an environment of increased temperature of 90 °C. In all three cases of modification with an admixture of nanosilica (type 1, 2 and 3, concentration 0.5%, 1% and 5%), the cement stone shows an improvement in mechanical properties, which is manifested by an increase in compressive strength. The most homogeneous results of strength measurements are for cement slurries with an admixture of type 3 nanosilica (the highest average strength: 132–149% in relation to the base sample). They show the smallest stretch marks and deviations from the average. The highest average increase in strength is for the sample with the addition of 1% nanosilica (on average 124% in relation to the base sample). This amount causes the greatest increase in strength with no significant deterioration of rheological parameters.

Bamboo fiber composite (BFC) is a unidirectional and continuous bamboo fiber composite manufactured by consolidation and gluing of flattened, partially separated bamboo culm strips into thick and dense panels. The composite mechanical properties are primarily influenced by panel density, its variation and uniformity. This paper characterized the horizontal density distribution (HDD) within BFC panels and its controlling factors. It revealed that HDD follows a normal distribution, with its standard deviation (SD) strongly affected by sampling specimen size, panel thickness and panel locations. SD was lowest in the thickest (40 mm) panel and largest-size (150 × 150-mm2) specimens. There was also a systematic variation along the length of the BFC due to the tapering effect of bamboo culm thickness. Density was higher along panel edges due to restraint from the mold edges during hot pressing. The manual BFC mat forming process is presented and found to effectively minimize the density variation compared to machine-formed wood composites. This study provides a basic understanding of and a quality control guide to the formation uniformity of BFC products.

Abstract The average porosity and permeability in the developed clastic rock reservoir in Tarim oilfield in China is 22.16% and 689.85×10-3 μm2. The isolation layer thickness between water layer and oil layer is less than 2 meters. The pressure of oil layer is 0.99 g/cm3, and the pressure of bottom water layer is 1.22 g/cm3, the pressure difference between them is as bigger as 12 to 23 MPa. It is difficult to achieve the layer isolation between the water layer and oil layer. To solve the zonal isolation difficulty and reduce permeable loss risk in clastic reservoir with high porosity and permeability, matrix anti-invasion additive, self-innovate plugging ability material of slurry, self-healing slurry, open-hole packer outside the casing, design and control technology of cement slurry performance, optimizing casing centralizer location technology and displacement with high pump rate has been developed and successfully applied. The results show that: First, the additive with physical and chemical crosslinking structure matrix anti-invasion is developed. The additive has the characteristics of anti-dilution, low thixotropy, low water loss and short transition, and can seal the water layer quickly. Second, the plugging material in the slurry has a better plugging performance and could reduce the permeability of artificial core by 70-80% in the testing evaluation. Third, the self-healing cement slurry system can quickly seal the fracture and prevent the fluid from flowing, and can ensuring the long-term effective sealing of the reservoir. Fourth, By strict control of the thickening time (operation time) and consistency (20-25 Bc), the cement slurry can realize zonal isolation quickly, which has achieved the purpose of quickly sealing off the water layer and reduced the risk of permeable loss. And the casing centralizers are used to ensure that the standoff ratio of oil and water layer is above 67%. The displacement with high pump rate (2 m3/min, to ensure the annular return velocity more than 1.2 m/s) can efficiently clean the wellbore by diluting the drilling fluid and washing the mud cake, and can improve the displacement efficiency. The cementing technology has been successfully applied in 100 wells in Tarim Oilfield. The qualification rate and high quality rate is 87.9% and 69% in 2019, and achieve zone isolation. No water has been produced after the oil testing and the water content has decreased to 7% after production. With the cementing technology, we have improved zonal isolation, increased the crude oil production and increased the benefit of oil.

the article proposes a rational method for processing 3D printing concrete scrap using vibration equipment, which allows obtaining a multicomponent building material with minimal electricity consumption. As a crite-rion for the degree of grinding of concrete scrap, it is proposed to use the specific surface area of the finely dispersed part of concrete scrap, which should correspond to 400-500 m2/kg. The possibility of reusing the resulting product instead of the traditional fine aggregate of quartz sand is shown. It was found that the con-crete scrap without the addition of Portland cement hardens, reaching up to 48% of the compressive strength of the control samples by 28 days. When 10% of the binder CEM I 42.5 N was added to the concrete scrap processing product, the compressive strength of fine-grained concrete increased by 106.6%, and 20% of Portland cement - by 112.2 %, compared to the strength of control samples of a similar composition on tra-ditional quartz sand after 28 days of hardening. It is noted that this is primarily due to the weak contact zone of quartz sand and the cement matrix of concrete. The use of the product of processing concrete scrap al-lows obtaining building composites based on it with the complete exclusion of natural raw materials

Carbon dioxide CO2could corrode the oil well cement paste matrix under agreeable moisture and pressure condition in deep oil wells, which could decrease the compressive strength and damage the annular seal reliability of cement paste matrix. The problem of oil well cement paste matrix corrosion by CO2was researched in the paper for obtain the feasible corrosion prevention technical measures. The microstructure and compressive strength of corroded cement paste matrix were examined by scanning electron microscopeSEMand strength test instrument etc. under different corrosion conditions. The mechanism and effect law of corrosion on oil well cement paste matrix by CO2were analyzed. And the suitable method to protect CO2corrosion in deep oil wells was explored. The results show that the corrosion mechanism of cement paste matrix by CO2was that the wetting phase CO2could generate chemical reaction with original hydration products produced from cement hydration, which CaCO3were developed and the original composition and microstructure of cement paste matrix were destroyed. The compressive strength of corrosion cement paste matrix always was lower than that of un-corrosion cement paste matrix. The compressive strength of corrosion cement paste matrix decreased with increase of curing temperature and differential pressure. The corroded degree of cement paste matrix was intimately related with the compositions of cement slurry. Developing and design anti-corrosive cement slurry should base on effectively improving the compact degree and original strength of cement paste matrix. The compounding additive R designed in the paper could effectively improve the anti-corrosive ability of cement slurry.

Chloride ingress into concrete from the surrounding environment can result in the corrosion of the embedded steel reinforcement and cause damage to the concrete. Superabsorbent polymer (SAP) with fine particle size was incorporated into the structure of concrete for controlling the chloride ingress and improving its compressive strength via promotion of internal curing. The SAP used in this study was evaluated for its absorbency property when exposed to cementitious environment such as aqueous solution of Ca (OH)2 and cement slurry. The results were compared to that in sodium chloride solution, the environment where absorbency of most of the SAP found in the market are well studied. Results showed that although SAP absorbency decreased with increasing concentration of Ca (OH)2 and cement, the results suggest that water containing cementitious materials are able to be absorbed by SAP. Chloride ingress into 28-day cured concrete specimens were determined using Rapid Chloride Penetration Test (RCPT) method employing 60V DC driving force. Concrete samples with size of 50 mm height x 100 mm diameter were prepared using a M25 mix design with 0.4 and 0.45 water to cement ratios and different percentages of SAP such as 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.15% with respect to cement mass. Results showed that concrete with 0.15% SAP gave the best result with 14% less chloride permeability than concrete with no SAP for a 0.4 water to cement ratio. Concrete samples for compressive strength tests with size of 200 mm height x 100 mm diameter were prepared using the same mix design and percentages of SAP and cured for 28 days. Results showed that the best results for compressive strength was found at 0.1% SAP at a 0.4 water to cement ratio which can be attributed to internal curing provided by SAP.

Abstract The Khazzan and Ghazeer gas fields in the Sultanate of Oman are projected to deliver production of gas and condensate for decades to come. Over the life of the project, around 300 wells will be drilled, with a target drilling and completion time of 42 days for a vertical well. The high intensity of the well construction requires a standardized and robust approach for well cementing to deliver high-quality well integrity and zonal isolation. The wells are designed with a surface casing, an intermediate casing, a production casing or production liner, and a cemented completion. Most sections are challenging in terms of zonal isolation. The surface casing is set across a shallow-water carbonate formation, prone to lost circulation and shallow water flow. The production casing or production liner is set across fractured limestones and gas-bearing zones that can cause A- and B-Annulus sustained casing pressure if not properly isolated. The cemented completion is set across a high-temperature sandstone reservoir with depletion and the cement sheath is subjected to very high pressure and temperature variations during the fracturing treatment. A standardized cement blend is implemented for the entire field from the top section down to the reservoir. This blend works over a wide slurry density and temperature range, has expanding properties, and can sustain the high temperature of the reservoir section. For all wells, the shallow-water flow zone on the surface casing is isolated by a conventional 11.9 ppg lightweight lead slurry, capped with a reactive sodium silicate gel, and a 15.8 ppg cement slurry pumped through a system of one-inch flexible pipes inserted in the casing/conductor annulus. The long intermediate casing is cemented in one stage using a conventional lightweight slurry containing a high-performance lost circulation material to seal the carbonate microfractures. The excess cement volume is based on loss volume calculated from a lift pressure analysis. The cemented completion uses a conventional 13.7 - 14.5 ppg cement slurry; the cement is pre-stressed in situ with an expanding agent to prevent cement failure when fracturing the tight sandstone reservoir with high-pressure treatment. Zonal isolation success in a high-intensity drilling environment is assessed through key performance zonal isolation indicators. Short-term zonal isolation indicators are systematically used to evaluate cement barrier placement before proceeding with installing the next casing string. Long-term zonal isolation indicators are used to evaluate well integrity over the life of the field. A-Annulus and B-Annulus well pressures are monitored through a network of sensors transmitting data in real time. Since the standardization of cementing practices in the Khazzan field short-term job objectives met have increased from 76% to 92 % and the wells with sustained casing pressure have decreased from 22 % to 0%.

Abstract Cementing in wellbores with low fracture gradients can be challenging due to the risk of formation breakdowns when exceeding maximum allowable equivalent circulation densities (ECDs). Consequences include severe losses and formation damage, and insufficient placement of the cement slurry that necessitates time-consuming and costly remedial cementing to ensure zonal isolation. In recent cementing operations in Spain, the formation integrity test (FIT) of the open hole section indicated that the formation would have been broken down and losses occurred based on calculated equivalent circulating densities (ECDs) if the cement slurry had been pumped in a single-stage to achieve the operator's top-of-cement goal. As a solution to this problem, cementing was performed in stages, using specialty tools. However, during these operations, the stage tool did not work properly, wasting rig time and resulting in unsuccessful cement placement. To overcome this issue, the operator decided to cement the section in a single stage, preceded by a novel aqueous spacer system that aids in strengthening weak formations and controlling circulation losses. Before the operation, laboratory testing was conducted to ensure the spacer system's performance in weak, porous formations and better understand its mechanism. This paper will outline the laboratory testing, modeling and engineering design that preceded this successful single stage cementing job in a horizontal wellbore, with a final ECD calculated to be 0.12 g/cm3 (1.00 lb/gal) higher than the FIT-estimated figure.
