The concentration of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural (HMF) is an important quality-related index in milk and milk products. Fast, cost-effective and environmentally friendly determination of HMF is of great significance in milk products control. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) graphene-like surface (3DGrls) was successfully prepared within 5 min by an electrochemical amperometric pretreatment on a pencil graphite electrode (PGE). The fast-obtained 3D graphene-like surface increased the electrode surface area and enhanced the electron transfer capability without the addition of any harmful chemicals. The morphology and chemical composition of the obtained electrode were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results found that the electrochemical response to HMF at the prepared 3DGrls/PGE was 34 times higher than that at PGE. The modified electrode showed a good linear response to HMF in a concentration range of 0.35~116 μM with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.099 μM. The integrated electrode also exhibited excellent stability and wonderful antifouling property. Furthermore, the 3DGrls/PGE was successfully applied for the determination of HMF in three processed cheese samples with satisfactory results.

A pencil graphite electrode modified with poly (bromocresol green (BCG)) was prepared by electro-polymerization process for the determination of pantoprazole sodium. The surface morphology and structure of poly (BCG) film were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The determination of pantoprazole sodium in Britton–Robinson buffer (pH 7.0) was carried out by square wave adsorptive stripping voltammetric technique. Under optimum conditions, the linear response of the peak with concentration of the cited drug was in the range of 6.6–360 × 10 −8  M with limit of detection of 2.2 × 10 −8  M. Moreover, the poly (BCG)-modified electrode has been successfully applied to determine pantoprazole sodium in tablets, vials and during pharmacokinetic studies.

Contamination of waters with pharmaceuticals is an alarming problem as it may support the evolution of antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, fast and cost-effective analytical methods for potential on-site analysis are desired in order to control the water quality and assure the safety of its use as a source of drinking water. Antibody-based methods, such as the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), can be helpful in this regard but can also have certain pitfalls in store, depending on the analyte. As shown here for the class of β-lactam antibiotics, hydrolysis of the β‑lactam ring is a key factor in the immunochemical analysis as it influences antibody recognition. With the antibody used in this study, the limit of detection (LOD) in the immunoassay could be significantly reduced by hydrolysis for the five tested penicillins, with the lowest LOD for carbenicillin (0.2 nmol/L) and the greatest impact on penicillins G and V (reduction by 85%). In addition to enhanced quantification, our strategy also provides access to information about the degree of hydrolysis in water samples as shown for the most abundant penicillin amoxicillin.

An immobilization-free electrochemical sensor coupled with a graphene oxide (GO)-based aptasensor was developed for glycated human serum albumin (GHSA) detection. The concentration of GHSA was monitored by measuring the electrochemical response of free GO and aptamer-bound GO in the presence of glycated albumin; their currents served as the analytical signals. The electrochemical aptasensor exhibited good performance with a base-10 logarithmic scale. The calibration curve was achieved in the range of 0.01–50 µg/mL. The limit of detection (LOD) was 8.70 ng/mL. The developed method was considered a one-drop measurement process because a fabrication step and the probe-immobilization process were not required. This simple sensor offers a cost-effective, rapid, and sensitive detection method, and could be an alternative approach for determination of GHSA levels.

In the present study, an electrochemical sensor based on the electrode (SiMImCl/C) consisting of graphite and silica, grafted with 1-n-propyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride was used for ascorbic acid (AA) quantification in pharmaceuticals and food formulations. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were applied for electrochemical characterization of the SiMImCl/C electrode. The cyclic voltammetry study revealed that the oxidation of AA on this electrode is an irreversible process, realized by adsorption and diffusion limited step. The differential pulse voltammetry was applied to develop a procedure for the AA determination. The linear range was found to be 0.3–170 μmol L-1 and the limit of detection – 0.1 μmol L-1. The proposed SiMImCl/C electrode has long term stability and does not show electrochemical activity towards the analytes, which commonly coexist with AA. The sensor was successfully used for quantification of AA in food and pharmaceutical formulations.

This paper presents the application of zinc/aluminium-layered double hydroxide-quinclorac (Zn/Al-LDH-QC) as a modifier of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) paste electrode for the determination of bisphenol A (BPA). The Zn/Al-LDH-QC/MWCNT morphology was examined by a transmission electron microscope and a scanning electron microscope. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was utilized to investigate the electrode interfacial properties. The electrochemical responses of the modified electrode towards BPA were thoroughly evaluated by using square-wave voltammetry technique. The electrode demonstrated three linear plots of BPA concentrations from 3.0 × 10−8–7.0 × 10−7 M (R2 = 0.9876), 1.0 × 10−6–1.0 × 10−5 M (R2 = 0.9836) and 3.0 × 10−5–3.0 × 10−4 M (R2 = 0.9827) with a limit of detection of 4.4 × 10−9 M. The electrode also demonstrated good reproducibility and stability up to one month. The presence of several metal ions and organic did not affect the electrochemical response of BPA. The electrode is also applicable for BPA determination in baby bottle and mineral water samples with a range of recovery between 98.22% and 101.02%.

The development of a sensor based on molecularly imprinted polymer nanoparticles (nanoMIPs) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) for the detection of trace levels of cocaine is described in this paper. NanoMIPs for cocaine detection, synthesized using a solid phase, were applied as the sensing element. The nanoMIPs were first characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Dynamic Light Scattering and found to be ~148.35 ± 24.69 nm in size, using TEM. The nanoMIPs were then covalently attached to gold screen-printed electrodes and a cocaine direct binding assay was developed and optimized, using EIS as the sensing principle. EIS was recorded at a potential of 0.12 V over the frequency range from 0.1 Hz to 50 kHz, with a modulation voltage of 10 mV. The nanoMIPs sensor was able to detect cocaine in a linear range between 100 pg mL−1 and 50 ng mL−1 (R2 = 0.984; p-value = 0.00001) and with a limit of detection of 0.24 ng mL−1 (0.70 nM). The sensor showed no cross-reactivity toward morphine and a negligible response toward levamisole after optimizing the sensor surface blocking and assay conditions. The developed sensor has the potential to offer a highly sensitive, portable and cost-effective method for cocaine detection.

A new cloud point methodology was successfully used for the extraction of carcinogenic pesticides in milk samples as a prior step to their determination by spectrophotometry. In this work, non-ionic silicone surfactant, also known as 3-(3-hydroxypropyl-heptatrimethylxyloxane), was chosen as a green extraction solvent because of its structure and properties. The effect of different parameters, such as the type of surfactant, concentration and volume of surfactant, pH, salt, temperature, incubation time and water content on the cloud point extraction of carcinogenic pesticides such as atrazine and propazine, was studied in detail and a set of optimum conditions was established. A good correlation coefficient ( R 2 ) in the range of 0.991–0.997 for all calibration curves was obtained. The limit of detection was 1.06 µg l −1 (atrazine) and 1.22 µg l −1 (propazine), and the limit of quantitation was 3.54 µg l −1 (atrazine) and 4.07 µg l −1 (propazine). Satisfactory recoveries in the range of 81–108% were determined in milk samples at 5 and 1000 µg l −1 , respectively, with low relative standard deviation, n  = 3 of 0.301–7.45% in milk matrices. The proposed method is very convenient, rapid, cost-effective and environmentally friendly for food analysis.

A simple, efficient and reliable analytical method was developed and used for the determination of the fluvoxamine drug (FLV) in pharmaceutical preparations and biological fluids. The method is based on the cost-effective screen-printed platform for the potential transduction of the drug. Host-tailored molecular imprinting polymer (MIP) was integrated with the potentiometric platform as a recognition receptor, in which FLV, acrylamide (AAm), ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and acetonitrile were used as a template, functional monomer, cross-linker, and solvent, respectively. MIP particles were dispersed in plasticized poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) and the membrane was drop-casted on carbon screen-printed electrode. The MIP, in addition to non-imprinted polymers (NIP), was characterized and the binding experiment revealed high affinity and adsorption capacity of MIP towards FLV. The proposed sensor displayed near-Nernstian cationic slope of 55.0 ± 0.8 mV/decade (r2 = 0.999) with a low detection limit of 4.8 × 10−6 mol/L over a wide pH range (3.0–8.5). The electrochemical features of the proposed sensors including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and chronopotentiometry measurements (CP) in the presence of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as a solid contact transducer were also investigated. The applications of the proposed sensor for the determination of FLV in different dosage forms with recovery values (98.8%–101.9%) and (97.4%–101.1%), respectively compared with the reference HPLC method with acceptedFandt-student tests values at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract A small scale of environmentally hazardous 4-aminophenol can show significant impact on human health. Hence, in the present work, we have designed L-Valine film (Vf) modified carbon paste electrode (Vf/CPE) for the determination of 4-aminophenol. Herein, a facile in-situ L-Valine film was developed by electrochemical polymerization method onto the surface of bare carbon paste electrode (BCPE) with the help of cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique. A two-folds of electrochemical peak current enhancement was achieved at Vf/CPE in comparison with BCPE towards the determination of 4-aminophenol in optimum pH 7.0 of phosphate buffer solution (PBS). This was achieved due to the large surface area and conductive nature of Vf/CPE, which was concluded through the techniques of cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The effect of pH of buffer and scan rate studies were successfully studied. Morphological changes of BCPE and Vf/CPE was studied with the help of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The formation of Vf on CPE was also analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra. Under the optimized conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) values of 4-aminophenol were estimated with the aid of chronoamperometry (CA) technique and was found to be 9.8 μM and 32 μM, respectively. Finally the proposed method was found to have satisfactory repeatability, reproducibility and stability results with low relative standard deviation (RSD) values.

In this work, we used the mixed solution of manganese acetate and sodium sulfate to deposit manganese dioxide on the three-dimensional porous nickel foam that was previously soaked in alcohol, and then the effects of solution concentrations on their capacitance properties were investigated. The surface morphology, microstructure, elemental valence and other information of the material were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), etc. The electrochemical properties of the material were tested by Galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD), Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), Chronoamperometry (CA), Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), etc. The MnO2 electrode prepared at lower concentrations can respectively reach a specific capacitance of 529.5 F g−1 and 237.3 F g−1 at the current density of 1 A g−1 and 10 A g−1, and after 2000 cycles, the capacity retention rate was still 79.8% of the initial capacitance, and the energy density can even reach 59.4 Wh Kg−1, while at the same time, it also has a lower electrochemical impedance (Rs = 1.18 Ω, Rct = 0.84 Ω).
