Iron deficiency (ID) is the most prevalent and severe nutritional disorder globally and is the leading cause of iron deficiency anemia (IDA). IDA often progresses subtly symptomatic in children, whereas prolonged deficiency may permanently impair development. Early detection and frequent screening are, therefore, essential to avoid the consequences of IDA. In order to reduce the production cost and complexities involved in building advanced ID sensors, the devices were fabricated using a home-built patterning procedure that was developed and used for this work instead of lithography, which allows for fast prototyping of dimensions. In this article, we report the development of graphene-based field-effect transistors (GFETs) functionalized with anti-ferritin antibodies through a linker molecule (1-pyrenebutanoic acid, succinimidyl ester), to facilitate specific conjugation with ferritin antigen. The resulting biosensors feature an unprecedented ferritin detection limit of 10 fM, indicating a tremendous potential for non-invasive (e.g., saliva) ferritin detection.

The main cause of anemia in pregnancy is iron deficiency followed by folate deficiency. WHO estimates that the incidence of anemia is around 42% in pregnant women with middle to lower economic conditions. The purpose of this service is to increase the knowledge of pregnant women. regarding iron deficiency anemia and hemoglobin level examination as an independent early detection in Matang Seulimeng Village, the working area of Langsa Barat Health Center, Langsa City. The form of community service activities is the extension method with lectures and questions and answers. Meanwhile, early detection of high risk is carried out by examining hemoglobin levels and after 2 weeks of intervention, pregnant women with anemia are evaluated by examining hemoglobin levels. There was an increase in knowledge of both 85% and the results of hemoglobin examination from 18 anemic pregnant women after the evaluation became 67.8% not anemic. An assessment of the understanding of pregnant women about iron deficiency anemia education and hemoglobin examination as early detection of risk in pregnant women is 3 (three) stages (pretest stage, counseling stage, and posttest stage and evaluation of anemic pregnant women). There is an increase in knowledge after being given education on deficiency anemia in pregnant women, and being able to independently detect early signs of anemia so that they get treatment as soon as possible. Keywords: iron deficiency anemia, hemoglobin levels, early detection, pregnant women

Background: Beta-Thalassaemia Trait (β-TT) is common in this subcontinent as well as Bangladesh. 3% of our total population is documented to have β-TT. Iron deficiency anemia (IDA), remains one of the most severe and important nutritional disorder in the world especially in Bangladesh. Microcytic hypochromic blood picture is common manifestation of both disorders. Purpose of the present study was to see whether both can co-exist.Methods: This was a cross sectional study carried out in Department of Internal Medicine, Bangabandu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka from January-2014 to August-2015. Total 54 participants were selected from Haematology outpatient department (OPD), BSMMU. All of them had β-TT confirmed by Capillary Haemoglobin Electrophoresis. Proper counseling was done and informed consent was taken. Relevant history was taken and examination was done. Five ml of venous blood was collected and sent to Biochemistry department to measure serum iron, ferritin and tissue iron binding capacity (TIBC). Transferrin saturation (T.Sat) was calculated by formula (iron/TIBC) X100.Results: Total 54 patients who fulfilled the recruitment criteria were finally analyzed. Among them 85% (46) patients were females and 15% (8) were males. Median age was 30 years (range11-80 yrs). Most of the patients 78 % (42) belong to the age group between 15 to 44 years. Mean (±SD) HbA2 (%) was 5.35 (±1.39), Hb (%) 9.04± (1.39), MCV (fl)- 67.02 (±10.39), MCH (pg)- 21.06 (±3.99), RDW (%)- 17.77 (±3.85). Among them 44.4% (24) had low iron (<40μg/dl), 29.6 % (16) had low ferritin (15μgm/L), 33.3% (18) had high TIBC (>407μg/dl), and 50% (27) had low transferrin saturation (<16%). 13% (7) patients were found to be iron deficiency considering all parameters and 63% (34) patients were iron deficient in at least one parameter. Conclusions: The present study shows the frequent occurrence of iron deficiency (29.6%) in subjects with β-TT which is a potentially correctable clinical condition. Proper assessment of iron level among the β-TT should be done and those who are iron deficient, should be treated promptly which may improve their general wellbeing.J MEDICINE Jan 2018; 19 (1) : 44-48

INTRODUCTION Iron deficiency is the world most prevalent nutritional disorder which is associated with impaired neurocognitive function in infants. The prevalence of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in Portuguese infants remains unknown. The last study was performed by one of us (HA) in 1994 in a sample of 188 infants revealing a prevalence of IDA of 19%. The main objective of this study is to determine the current prevalence of IDA in a sample of infants nine months of age in Braga, Portugal. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study on a random sample of infants born from September 2016 to February 2017 at Braga Hospital. They were evaluated for anthropometry, socio-economic factors, feeding regime and a blood sample was taken for blood cell counts, serum ferritin and C reactive protein. RESULTS Forty-two infants were included. The prevalence of IDA was 7.1%.  Nine infants were anemic (21%); moderate anemia was observed in 2/9 of infants and mild anemia in 7/9 infants. Of the 3 infants with IDA, 2 had been exclusively breastfed until 6 months. CONCLUSIONS Compared to a study from 1994, there may have been a reduction in the prevalence of IDA in this area in Portugal.

Iron deficiency anemia is the most common nutritional disorder in the world, the most widespread form of anemia and the most frequent in children. In the presence of microcytic anemia, evidence of an iron deficiency (transferrin saturation index <10% and ferritin <12 mg/l) allows the diagnosis. An increase in requests and a reduced income are the most common causes in early childhood and adolescence. It is essential to ensure that the disorder is corrected at the end of therapy, in order to exclude rarer causes of iron deficiency. A correct diagnosisi and therapy are also essential to guarantee patients so to spare additional costs and stress for the whole family.

Background The prevalence of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) remains high in Indonesian children. When anemia is detected in a patient, the physician’s task is to identify the cause, address it, provide iron therapy, and prevent recurrence. However, prevention is best done by early detection. The reticulocyte hemoglobin equivalent (Ret-He) is a direct measurement of iron level in reticulocytes recently produced in the bone marrow. The Ret-He measurement may be an early indicator of iron deficiency, as it is sensitive at the initial stage of the condition. Objective To assess for a relationship between Ret-He and IDA as well as to evaluate the usefulness of Ret-He for diagnosing IDA in children. Methods This analytic, observational study with cross-sectional approach included 50 children aged 6-12 years and was performed from November 2013 to March 2014. The subjects were divided into IDA or non-IDA groups, based on ferritin levels. A correlation analysis using logistic regression was performed and the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and odds ratio (OR) were calculated. Results were considered to be statistically significant for P values <0.05.Results A low Ret-He level was significantly associated with IDA in children (P=0.005). The Ret-He cut-off point of 27.8 pg/L had sensitivity of 43.8%, specificity 85.3%, PPV 58.3%, and NPV 76.3%, with OR 4.5 (95%CI 1.1 to 17.7).Conclusion We find a significant positive relationship between Haemoglobin (Hb) and Ret-He in children, A low level of Ret-He is associated with greater risk of IDA in children. The Ret-He has a high specificity. As such, Ret-He may be useful as a screening tool for early detection of IDA in children.

The article presents a clinical case of a 38-year-old patient with revealed polyps of the stomach body and iron deficiency anemia on the background of chronic atrophic gastritis. On the example of this observation, variants of the course were demonstrated, including endoscopic and histological manifestations of autoimmune (atrophic corpus) gastritis (AIG). In parallel, the issues of diagnosis and management of patients with the most common polyps in the stomach are discussed. The problem of timely diagnosis of AIG and the advantages of non-invasive methods for assessing the functional state of the stomach is also being actualized.
