Conventional methods such as matched filtering, fractional lower order statistics cross ambiguity function, and recent methods such as compressed sensing and track-before-detect are used for target detection by passive radars. Target detection using these algorithms usually assumes that the background noise is Gaussian. However, non-Gaussian impulsive noise is inherent in real world radar problems. In this paper, a new optimization based algorithm that uses weighted l 1 and l 2 norms is proposed as an alternative to the existing algorithms whose performance degrades in the presence of impulsive noise. To determine the weights of these norms, the parameter that quantifies the impulsiveness level of the noise is estimated. In the proposed algorithm, the aim is to increase the target detection performance of a universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS) based passive radars by facilitating higher resolution with better suppression of the sidelobes in both range and Doppler. The results obtained from both simulated data with α stable distribution, and real data recorded by a UMTS based passive radar platform are presented to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm. The results show that the proposed algorithm provides more robust and accurate detection performance for noise models with different impulsiveness levels compared to the conventional methods.

The traditional method of constant false-alarm rate detection is based on the assumption of an echo statistical model. The target recognition accuracy rate and the high false-alarm rate under the background of sea clutter and other interferences are very low. Therefore, computer vision technology is widely discussed to improve the detection performance. However, the majority of studies have focused on the synthetic aperture radar because of its high resolution. For the defense radar, the detection performance is not satisfactory because of its low resolution. To this end, we herein propose a novel target detection method for the coastal defense radar based on faster region-based convolutional neural network (Faster R-CNN). The main processing steps are as follows: (1) the Faster R-CNN is selected as the sea-surface target detector because of its high target detection accuracy; (2) a modified Faster R-CNN based on the characteristics of sparsity and small target size in the data set is employed; and (3) soft non-maximum suppression is exploited to eliminate the possible overlapped detection boxes. Furthermore, detailed comparative experiments based on a real data set of coastal defense radar are performed. The mean average precision of the proposed method is improved by 10.86% compared with that of the original Faster R-CNN.

Abstract In this paper the goal is to explain predictions from complex machine learning models. One method that has become very popular during the last few years is Shapley values. The original development of Shapley values for prediction explanation relied on the assumption that the features being described were independent. If the features in reality are dependent this may lead to incorrect explanations. Hence, there have recently been attempts of appropriately modelling/estimating the dependence between the features. Although the previously proposed methods clearly outperform the traditional approach assuming independence, they have their weaknesses. In this paper we propose two new approaches for modelling the dependence between the features. Both approaches are based on vine copulas, which are flexible tools for modelling multivariate non-Gaussian distributions able to characterise a wide range of complex dependencies. The performance of the proposed methods is evaluated on simulated data sets and a real data set. The experiments demonstrate that the vine copula approaches give more accurate approximations to the true Shapley values than their competitors.

Extended target detection in the presence of K-distributed clutter has gained a special interest in recent years. High-resolution radars allow a target to be found in several resolution cells. Therefore, the detection rate and the false alarm rate of an extended target should be analyzed by these cells jointly rather than in one single resolution cell. A detector in which all the cells whose magnitude affected by one target are considered jointly is present. The performance and optimal parameters of the detector are analyzed in detail. Meanwhile, the large amount of calculation caused by enormous raw data is also considered. Then, an efficient method based on region growing algorithm and contour tracking algorithm is proposed. Only part of the resolution cells is scanned once with the proposed method, while all the cells are scanned at least one times in the existing methods. Therefore, considerable calculations are saved. Furthermore, the proposed method and several existing methods are performed with real data and simulated data, and the results show that the proposed model is practical and efficient to detect the extended targets in K-distributed clutters.

The BeiDou navigation satellite system shows its potential for passive radar vessel target detection owing to its global-scale coverage. However, the restrained power budget from BeiDou satellite hampers the detection performance. To solve this limitation, this paper proposes a long-time optimized integration method to obtain an adequate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). During the long observation time, the range migration, intricate Doppler migration, and noncoherence characteristic bring challenges to the integration processing. In this paper, first, the keystone transform is applied to correct the range walk. Then, considering the noncoherence of the entire echo, the hybrid integration strategy is adopted. To remove the Doppler migration and correct the residual range migration, the long-time integration is modeled as an optimization problem. Finally, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is applied to solve the optimization problem, after which the target echo over the long observation time is well concentrated, providing a reliable detection performance for the BeiDou-based passive radar. Its effectiveness is shown by the simulated and experimental results.

Noncausal autoregressive models with heavy-tailed errors generate locally explosive processes and, therefore, provide a convenient framework for modelling bubbles in economic and financial time series. We investigate the probability properties of mixed causal-noncausal autoregressive processes, assuming the errors follow a stable non-Gaussian distribution. Extending the study of the noncausal AR(1) model by Gouriéroux and Zakoian (2017), we show that the conditional distribution in direct time is lighter-tailed than the errors distribution, and we emphasize the presence of ARCH effects in a causal representation of the process. Under the assumption that the errors belong to the domain of attraction of a stable distribution, we show that a causal AR representation with non-i.i.d. errors can be consistently estimated by classical least-squares. We derive a portmanteau test to check the validity of the estimated AR representation and propose a method based on extreme residuals clustering to determine whether the AR generating process is causal, noncausal, or mixed. An empirical study on simulated and real data illustrates the potential usefulness of the results.

Peak overlapping is a common problem in chromatography, mainly in the case of complex biological mixtures, i.e., metabolites. Due to the existence of the phenomenon of co-elution of different compounds with similar chromatographic properties, peak separation becomes challenging. In this paper, two computational methods of separating peaks, applied, for the first time, to large chromatographic datasets, are described, compared, and experimentally validated. The methods lead from raw observations to data that can form inputs for statistical analysis. First, in both methods, data are normalized by the mass of sample, the baseline is removed, retention time alignment is conducted, and detection of peaks is performed. Then, in the first method, clustering is used to separate overlapping peaks, whereas in the second method, functional principal component analysis (FPCA) is applied for the same purpose. Simulated data and experimental results are used as examples to present both methods and to compare them. Real data were obtained in a study of metabolomic changes in barley (Hordeum vulgare) leaves under drought stress. The results suggest that both methods are suitable for separation of overlapping peaks, but the additional advantage of the FPCA is the possibility to assess the variability of individual compounds present within the same peaks of different chromatograms.

Since pairwise registration is a necessary step for the seamless fusion of point clouds from neighboring stations, a closed-form solution to planar feature-based registration of LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) point clouds is proposed in this paper. Based on the Plücker coordinate-based representation of linear features in three-dimensional space, a quad tuple-based representation of planar features is introduced, which makes it possible to directly determine the difference between any two planar features. Dual quaternions are employed to represent spatial transformation and operations between dual quaternions and the quad tuple-based representation of planar features are given, with which an error norm is constructed. Based on L2-norm-minimization, detailed derivations of the proposed solution are explained step by step. Two experiments were designed in which simulated data and real data were both used to verify the correctness and the feasibility of the proposed solution. With the simulated data, the calculated registration results were consistent with the pre-established parameters, which verifies the correctness of the presented solution. With the real data, the calculated registration results were consistent with the results calculated by iterative methods. Conclusions can be drawn from the two experiments: (1) The proposed solution does not require any initial estimates of the unknown parameters in advance, which assures the stability and robustness of the solution; (2) Using dual quaternions to represent spatial transformation greatly reduces the additional constraints in the estimation process.
