The dynamic vibration of the gear coupling-rotor system (GCRS) caused by misalignment is an important factor of low frequency vibration and noise radiation of the naval marine. The axial misalignment of gear coupling is inevitable owing to mass eccentricity, and is unconstrained in axial direction at high-speed operation. Therefore, the dynamic model of GCRS is proposed, considering gear-coupling misalignment and contact force in this paper. The whole motion differential equation of GCRS is established based on the finite element method. Moreover, the numerical calculation method of meshing force, considering the uniform distribution load on contact surface, is presented, and the mathematical predictive time–frequency characteristics are analyzed by the Newmark stepwise integral approach. Finally, a reduced-scale application of the propulsion shaft system is utilized to validate the effectiveness of the proposed dynamic model. For the sensibility to low-frequency vibration, the natural frequencies and vibration modes of GCRS are analyzed through the processing and analysis of acceleration signal. The experimental dynamic response and main components of vibration are respectively consistent with mathematical results, which demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed dynamic model of GCRS with misalignment. Furthermore, it also shows that the proposed finite element analysis and calculation method are suitable for complex shafting, providing a novel thought for dynamic analysis of the propeller–shaft–hull coupled system of marine.

Abstract In order to realize a small-sized energy harvester with high output, this study prototypes a small motor-driven gyroscopic power generator. Supplying energy to sensors and devices is the biggest problem for Internet of Things (IoT) systems. One solution is gyroscopic power generators, which are a type of vibrational generator that amplify the inertia force of weights by rotating them at high speed, and in doing so can obtain greater output than conventional generators that use simple vibration for the same mass weight. This paper reports on a motor-driven type gyroscopic generator in which the flywheel is spun with an embedded motor, and which is superior in applicability to random vibration generators. The generators of this type that have been studied thus far are very large and have been primarily used for wave power generation in the ocean. However, when the shape of this gyroscopic power generator type is miniaturized proportionally, the output per volume decreases in proportion to the fifth power of the dimension. This makes it difficult to maintain the power output while miniaturizing the generator size. In this research, the structure of the gyroscopic power generator is thoroughly refined and miniaturization is realized by making full use of the available space. By using a motor with high design freedom, the spindle motor and flywheel are unified. From this accomplishment, not only is the required space reduced, the number of mechanical parts and the friction loss are decreased as well. The prototype generator has a size of about 150 mm on its long side. When a swinging vibration of 50 degrees in amplitude and 2 Hz in frequency is applied, a net output of 0.104 W is obtained. This output power is sufficient to drive sensors and low power wide area (LPWA) radio circuits.

Abstract This paper describes a friction-driven gyro generator that works under arbitrary vibrations and generates more than 1 W of power. Vibrational generators are energy harvesters that convert environmental vibrations into electrical power via the inertial force of pendulums. In conventional generators that use simple vibration, the power is less than 10 mW for a wearable size because vibrations in the natural environment are as low as 1 Hz. Gyroscopic generators increase the inertial force by rotating a pendulum at high speed and creating a gyro effect. In this generator, a palm-size product that generates 0.1 W and weighs 280 g has already been commercialized, but this device operates only under a particular vibration that synchronizes rotor precession and stalls under random vibration. To solve this problem, in this research, two gimbals and a precession spring are introduced to support the rotor. We developed a prototype generator with straight tracks measuring 16 cm × 11 cm × 12 cm with a mass of 980 g. Under a vibration of 4 Hz and ±20 degrees, power generation of 1.6 W was confirmed. Next, a prototype circular track was made. Power generation of 0.2 W with a vibration of 1 Hz and ±90 degrees was confirmed. Finally, a simple formula to estimate the upper limit of the generation power is derived. It is suggested that the circular-type generator is suitable for low-frequency vibration and can generate twice the power of a straight-type generator.

The paper investigates experimentally the effect of low-frequency vibration on nonlinear vibro-acoustic wave modulations applied to the detection of Barely Visible Impact Damage (BVID) in a composite plate. Finite Element (FE) modeling was used in a pretest stage to identify different motion scenarios of delaminated surfaces and relate them to natural frequencies of the damaged plate. In particular the opening-closing and frictional sliding actions of the defected interfaces have been considered. Subsequently, the identified frequencies have been used for low frequency excitation in nonlinear acoustic experiments on a composite plate with impact damage.

The cause of the low-frequency vibration (subsynchronous vibration) of a high pressure turbine was investigated by the analytical study and vibration exciting test for the actual machine in operation. From the results, it is found that the low-frequency vibration is caused by the decrease of the rotor system damping at high-loading operating conditions. As a countermeasure, a squeeze-film damper is designed in order to increase the damping of the rotor system. After the verification test of the squeeze-film damper’s capability in the workshop, it was installed on the actual turbine. Vibration exciting tests for the high pressure turbine under the actual operating conditions were carried out. These field tests confirmed that the damping of the rotor system was increased as expected in the design and consequently the low-frequency vibrations disappeared completely under all operating conditions.

This paper focuses on the fault characteristics of the bending and torsional motions of a rub-impact dual-rotor system caused by aircraft flight maneuvers. The equations of the bending-torsional coupling motion of a dual-rotor system are established considering a low-pressure rotor rub-impact fault and the transient barrel roll flight of an aircraft. The 4th Runge-Kutta method with varied steps is used to obtain the bending and torsional responses. Then, the influences of the system parameters, including the rub-impact stiffness, friction coefficient, and rotating speed, on the bending and torsional motions of the dual-rotor system are investigated in detail. At last, a rotor rubbing experiment is carried out, verifying the validity of the simulation results. The results show that the rub-impact stiffness affects bending vibration significantly and the torsional motion is sensitive to the friction coefficient. Correspondingly, the torsional responses show apparent fractional fault frequencies and rotating fault frequencies within the whole region of the rub-impact stiffness. The bending responses can only display fault frequencies at certain rub-impact stiffness. As for the rotating speed, the torsional responses are also more effective than the bending responses for the rub-impact fault detection at the low- and high-speed regions. The results will contribute to a comprehensive basis for the rub-impact fault detection.

The vibro-acoustic modulation (VAM) technique is probably the most widely used nonlinear method for crack detection. The VAM method is based on the effect of modulation of high-frequency acoustic waves by a low-frequency vibration. The intensity of the modulation is related to the severity of the damage and has been used so far as a damage index. The damage index simply based on the amplitude of the first side bands in the spectral domain often leads to controversial results about the severity of the damage. In this work, the nonlinear characteristics of the vibro-modulation were systematically investigated by employing time-frequency analysis based on the Zhao-Atlas-Marks (ZAM) distribution. The results of the analysis show that the amplitude of the sideband components is modulated by the low frequency vibration and the modulation amplitude depends on the size of the crack. Based on the obtained results, a new damage index was defined in relation to the strength of the modulation. The new damage index is more sensitive and robust and correlates better with crack size compared to the index based on the amplitude of the sidebands.

In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of the human body were investigated by developing a 3-D finite element model based on 50th percentile anthropometric data for a 54 kg Indian male subject in standing position by considering human body segments as an ellipsoid. The finite element modal analysis is carried out to extract several low-frequency vibration modes and its vibration mode shapes were presented in this paper. The results show that the lowest natural frequency of the standing passenger model occurs in the fore-and-aft direction. The second natural frequency occurs in the lateral direction and the first order natural frequency of the standing passenger model in the vertical direction occurs at 5.379 Hz. The model will be helpful to predict the vibration response of human body under various vibration environment encounters in the railway vehicle.

Because of wrong setting or long-term running of rotating machinery, the looseness may ouur in the bearing seats or bases. And also bring impact and rubbing of rotor-stator, That is the looseness and rub-impact coupling fault. In the paper,a mechanics model and a finite element model of a vertical dual-disk cantilever rotor- bearing system with coupling faults of looseness and rub-impact are set up. Based on the nonlinear finite element method and contact theory, the dynamical characteristices of the system under the influence of the looseness rigidity and impact-rub clearance is studied. The results show that the impact-rub of rotor-stator can reduce the low frequency vibration caused by looseness, and the impact-rub caused by looseness has obvious orientation. Also, the conclusion of diagnosing the looseness and rub-impact coupling faults is given in the end of the paper.
