The paper aims to investigate the behavior of Arboblend V2 Nature biopolymer samples covered with three ceramic powders, Amdry 6420 (Cr2O3), Metco 143 (ZrO2 18TiO2 10Y2O3) and Metco 136F (Cr2O3-xSiO2-yTiO2). The coated samples were obtained by injection molding, and the micropowder deposition was achieved by using the Atmospheric Plasma Spray (APS) method, with varied thickness layers. The present study will only describe the results for nine-layer deposition because, as the number of layers’ increases, the surface quality and mechanical/thermal characteristics such as wear, hardness and thermal resistance are also increased. The followed determinations were conducted: the adhesion strength, hardness on a microscopic scale by micro-indentation, thermal analysis and structural and morphological analysis. The structural analysis has highlighted a uniform deposition for the ZrO2 18TiO2 10Y2O3 layer, but for the layers that contained Cr2O3 ceramic microparticles, the deposition was not completely uniform. The thermal analysis revealed structural stability up to a temperature of 230 °C, the major degradation of the biopolymer matrix taking place at a temperature around 344 °C. The samples’ crystalline structure as well as the presence of the Cr2O3 compound significantly influenced the micro-indentation and scratch analysis responses. The novelty of this study is given by itself the coating of the Arboblend V2 Nature biopolymer (as base material), with ceramic microparticles as the micropowder coating material. Following the undertaken study, the increase in the mechanical, tribological and thermal characteristics of the samples recommend all three coated biopolymer samples as suitable for operating in harsh conditions, such as the automotive industry, in order to replace plastic materials.

Electromagnetic linear actuators (ELAs) may be confronted with unsatisfactory performance when subjected to overheating. Therefore, it is significant to clarify its thermal characteristics and design the thermal performance requirements. A thermal analysis method based on multiphysics coupling model was presented, which uses the non-simplified loss distribution as the heat source to calculate the temperature field, adjusts the material properties by temperature, and considers the interaction between motion (including impact) and loss. More importantly, an improved universal equivalent winding to satisfy the condition of real compact concentrated winding was developed. Finally, the validity of this approach was verified through the experiment, and the regularity of temperature was summarized. The results show that the error of simulation and experiment is less than 6% and the permissible continuous operation frequency is no more than 30 Hz. The approach proposed in this paper can be employed not only to the ELA, but also to the design and analysis a wide range of electromagnetic machines.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the unbalanced magnetic pull (UMP) of the rotor of traction motor and the influence of the UMP on thermal characteristics of traction motor bearing. Design/methodology/approach The unbalanced magnetic pull on the rotor with different eccentricity was calculated by Fourier series expansion method. A bearing thermal analysis finite element model considering both the vibration of high-speed train caused by track irregularity and the UMP of traction motor rotor was established. The validity of the model is verified by experimental data obtained from a service high-speed train. Findings The results show that thermal failure of bearing subassemblies most likely occurs at contact area between the inner ring and rollers. The UMP of rotor of traction motor has a significant effect on the temperature of the inner ring and roller of the bearing. When the eccentricity is 10%, the temperature can even be increased by about 12°C. Therefore, the UMP of rotor of traction motor must be considered in thermal analysis of traction motor bearing. Originality/value In the thermal analysis of the bearing of the traction motor of high-speed train, the UMP of the rotor of the traction motor is considered for the first time

Abstract This paper presents the problem of thermal degradation of thermoplastic materials processed using the injection method. Attention was paid to the issue of the optimal selection of a dye for modifying the base materials. For the selected materials and dyes, derivatograph tests were performed in order to assess their thermal characteristics and breakdown kinetics. Additionally, tribological tests and microscope observations of selected samples were performed. The obtained test results suggest a diverse level of thermal processes in the analyzed materials. This is crucial for the appropriate selection of dyes for plastic materials. As it turned out, the tribological properties of materials can also influence the technological quality of the injected alloy.

Composite materials are gaining increasing industrial applications worldwide. Composites based on polymers with conductive fillers have been recently in the focus of extensive research primarily because of their growing importance from the point of view of application. Natural polymers based on renewable materials with selected fillers can be used directly as contemporary materials in: electronics, medicine, industry, as contact conductive materials, electromagnetic and radio wave shields, photothermal optical recorders, electronic noses sensitive to certain chemicals, as well as economically acceptable catalysts. In this paper the results of experimental studies of the properties of composite materials based on lignocellulosic matrix (LC) filled with electrolytic copper powder and chemically obtained silver powder are presented. Volume fractions of metal fillers in the composite materials in tested samples were varied in the range of 1.6-30% (v/v), and the samples were prepared by compression – cold pressing. Characterization included examination of the influence of particle size and morphology on the conductivity and percolation threshold of the composites using a variety of testing techniques: SEM, TGA, DSC, particle size distribution and conductivity measurements. The thermal analysis of the prepared composites showed the improvement of the thermal characteristics of the composites. This was due to the presence of the metallic fillers which are very good thermal conductors, hence accumulating the emitted heat during TGA measurements primary to lignocellulosic matrix. On the other hand, there is no difference in the response with different metallic fillers and particles with different morphologies. Glass transition temperature is improved by 20 ºC for all the composites.

The use of plastic materials as food packaging materials has caused environmental problems, namely the accumulation of plastic waste. The presence of innovation in making food packaging with organic materials in the form of edible films can minimize plastic waste because organic materials can be degraded by decomposing microbes in a relatively short time. This review examines the production and characteristics of composite edible films based on polysaccharides and proteins. Several characteristics of the material that this film must meet, such as resistance to water and evaporation, are the standards that must be met for edible films. Starch-based materials are still too brittle to be the base material for making films because the hydrophilic nature of starch makes it easy to dissolve in water. The functional properties of starch need to be improved, including mixing it with other ingredients such as proteins, plasticizers, and essential oils in formulations. The mixing of these ingredients can form a formulation that forms an edible film with characteristics suitable for various food products.

In this work, the presence of biodegradable polymers in recycled plastic materials was characterized using readily available techniques. Recycled polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were studied. The contamination of these plastics with polylactic acid (PLA), polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and thermoplastic starch (TPS) was simulated using 10 wt.% of the contaminant. Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used as characterization techniques. In addition, the effect of aging on recycled products from PET blends contaminated with TPS and PHB was studied. The results show changes in the intensity of the FTIR spectra bands of the PS and PP blends contaminated with biodegradable polymers. By DSC, changes in the cold crystallization peak of recycled PET are observed when mixed with TPS and PHB. When the contaminant is PLA, the changes are masked due to the thermal characteristics of both materials. In PS, changes in the calorimetric curves are identified by the presence of PLA and PHB. Contamination with PLA, PHB and TPS hinders the processing of recycled PET after one year of storage due to the aging of the material.

This paper presents the electromagnetic and thermal characteristics of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) in a joint actuator which is used for articulated robot application. In an attempt to design a compact PMSM for the articulated robot, robot link should be taken into consideration during the motor design process as it can reduce the temperature distribution on motor, thus reducing the volume of the motor. A lumped-parameter thermal model of PMSM with and without a link is proposed considering the core loss, copper loss, and mechanical loss as heat sources. The electromagnetic and thermal analysis results are well confirmed by the experiment in a 400 W 20-pole/24-slot PMSM. The experiment results show that the robot link helps to reduce the motor end-winding temperature by about 40%, and this leads to an increase in power density of the motor.
