Tetraphenylethylene (TPE), a typical luminogen with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) features, has been widely used to prepare AIE fluorescent materials. In this study, TPE-functionalized polydimethylsiloxane (n-TPE-AP-PDMS) was successfully synthesized by attaching TPE to polydimethylsiloxane via aza-Michael addition. The introduction of polydimethylsiloxane to TPE had no obvious effect on photophysical properties. Intriguingly, n-TPE-AP-PDMS exhibited two opposite fluorescence emission behaviors in different systems: aggregation-induced quenching (ACQ) behavior in a tetrahydrofuran/water mixture and typical AIE phenomenon in a tetrahydrofuran/hexane mixture. This unexpected transition from ACQ to AIE can be attributed to a twisted intramolecular charge-transfer effect and flexible aminopropyl polydimethylsiloxane. n-TPE-AP-PDMS was further used as a fluorescent probe to detect nitrobenzene and it showed high quenching efficiency. Moreover, the n-TPE-AP-PDMS film showed high reversibility so that the quenching efficiency remained constant after five cycles. This work can provide a deeper understanding of AIE behavior and guidance to develop a new AIE polymer for chemosensors with high performance.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an innovative treatment of malignant or diseased tissues. The effectiveness of PDT depends on light dosimetry, oxygen availability, and properties of the photosensitizer (PS). Depending on the medium, photophysical properties of the PS can change leading to increase or decrease in fluorescence emission and formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) especially singlet oxygen (1O2). In this study, the influence of solvent polarity, viscosity, concentration, temperature, and pH medium on the photophysical properties of protoporphyrin IX, pyropheophorbide-a, and Photofrin® were investigated by UV-visible absorption, fluorescence emission, singlet oxygen emission, and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopies.

A series of O-chelated BODIPYs fused with aromatic rings such as benzene and acenaphthylene at β,β-positions was synthesized as a near-infrared dye. The photophysical properties were examined by UV-vis-NIR absorption and fluorescence measurement. Acenaphthylene-fused O-BODIPYs showed a intense absorption at 750–840 nm with the ε of 105 M-1.cm-1. and a fluorescence emission at 770–850 nm with the high Φ value of 0.06–0.43.

The graphene nanosheets (GNS)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite films with out-of-plane dielectric actuation behavior were prepared through a layer-by-layer spin coating process. The GNS-PDMS/PDMS composite films with 1~3 layers of GNS-PDMS films were spin coated on top of the PDMS film. The dielectric, mechanical, and electromechanical actuation properties of the composite films were investigated. The dielectric constant of the GNS-PDMS3/PDMS composite film at 1 kHz is 5.52, which is 1.7 times that of the GNS-PDMS1/PDMS composite film. The actuated displacement of the GNS-PDMS/PDMS composite films is greatly enhanced by increasing the number of GNS-PDMS layers. This study provides a novel alternative approach for fabricating high-performance actuators with out-of-plane actuation behavior.

High performance silicalite-1 membranes were successfully synthesized on silica tubes by seeding method after filling the tubes with water and glycerol mixtures. After seeding the silica tubes with 200 nm seeds, all the silicalite-1 membranes show acceptable separation performance towards ethanol/water mixture after 4-12 h hydrothermal synthesis, and the highest flux of membrane with 8 h hydrothermal synthesis reaches about 0.98 kg/m2.h and the separation factor reaches about 60 towards 3 wt.% ethanol/water mixture. This result shows that the as-synthesized silicalite-1 membrane can concentrate the ethanol from 3% to about 65%, and the ethanol can be obtained over 600 g/m2.h by using the silicalite-1 membrane, which shows that seeding method and suitable control of synthesis conditions is possible for preparing high-performance silicalite-1 membranes.
