Toothpastes containing biomimetic hydroxyapatite have been investigated in recent years; the behavior of this material in the oral environment has been evaluated directly on dental enamel showing a marked remineralizing activity. To propose microRepair®-based toothpastes (Zn-carbonate hydroxyapatite) for the domiciliary oral hygiene in patients with dental composite restorations, the aim of this study was to evaluate the deposition of Zn-carbonate hydroxyapatite on a polymeric composite resin with Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (SEM/EDS) analysis. Twenty healthy volunteers underwent the bonding of 3 orthodontic buttons on the vestibular surfaces of upper right premolars and first molar. On the surface of the buttons, a ball-shaped mass of composite resin was applied and light-cured. Then, the volunteers were randomly divided into two groups according to the toothpaste used for domiciliary oral hygiene: the Control toothpaste containing stannous fluoride and the Trial toothpaste containing microRepair®. The buttons were debonded after 7 days (T1—first premolar), after 15 days (T2—second premolar), and after 30 days (T3—first molar) to undergo the SEM/EDS analysis. The deposition of calcium, phosphorus, and silicon was assessed through EDS analysis and data were submitted to statistical analysis (p < 0.05). SEM morphologic evaluation showed a marked deposition of the two toothpastes on the surfaces of the buttons. EDS quantitative analysis showed an increase of calcium, phosphorus, and silicon in both the groups, with a statistically significant difference of calcium deposition at T3 for the Trial group. Therefore, the use of toothpaste containing Zn-carbonate hydroxyapatite could be proposed as a device for domiciliary oral hygiene because the deposition of hydroxyapatite on polymeric composite resin could prevent secondary caries on the margins of restorations.

AbstractOur aim was to test the hypothesis that the use of mouthwashes, consumption of soft drinks, as well as the type of light curing unit (LCU), would change the surface roughness (Ra) and morphology of a nanofilled composite resin (Z350® 3M ESPE). Samples (80) were divided into eight groups: Halogen LCU, group 1, saliva (control); group 2, Pepsi Twist®; group 3, Listerine®; group 4, Colgate Plax®; LED LCU, group 5, saliva; group 6, Pepsi Twist®; group 7, Listerine®; group 8, Colgate Plax®. Ra values were measured at baseline, and after 7 and 14 days. One specimen of each group was prepared for scanning electron microscopy analysis after 14 days. The data were subjected to multifactor analysis of variance at a 95% confidence followed by Tukey's honestly significant difference post-hoc test. All the treatments resulted in morphological changes in composite resin surface, and the most significant change was in Pepsi Twist® groups. The samples of G6 had the greatest increase in Ra. The immersion of nanofilled resin in mouthwashes with alcohol and soft drink increases the surface roughness. Polymerization by halogen LCU (reduced light intensity) associated with alcohol contained mouthwash resulted in significant roughness on the composite.

AbstractThis article reviews the development, composition, chemistry, recent technological advances, and extent of use of composite resin restorative materials, adhesives, and pit and fissure sealants. The problems related to the clinical behavior of these materials in the oral environment are dealt with, and methods of minimizing their present deficiencies are suggested. Future directions that might be taken to improve these materials and solve some of the inadequacies that these materials exhibit are also discussed.

This study investigated the influences of acidity, ethanol, and pigment on the optical properties, microhardness, and surface roughness (Ra) of a nanohybrid dental composite resin. A total of 108 disc-shaped specimens were fabricated using a nanohybrid dental composite and allocated into 36 different storage solutions according to the levels of pH (2.0, 3.0, 4.0, and 5.5), ethanol (0%, 20%, and 40%), and anthocyanin pigment (0%, 2.5%, and 12.5%). Measurements of the colorimetric parameter and the amount of color change (ΔE), translucency parameter (TP), microhardness, and surface roughness (Ra) were performed at 24 h (baseline), 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-weeks. Repeated measures of analysis of variance (ANOVA) with a Tukey honestly significant difference test and Pearson correlation analysis were carried out (α = 0.05). Pigment of 12.5% or 40% ethanol significantly increased the ΔE (P < 0.001, P = 0.048, respectively). Pigment of 2.5% or 12.5% significantly decreased the TP (P = 0.001, P < 0.001, respectively). Microhardness of composite resin stored in pH 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 solution was lower than that for pH 5.5 (P < 0.001). Pigment, ethanol, and pH did not influence the Ra. TP change and ΔE, and Ra and ΔE had a significant positive correlation (P < 0.05). In conclusion, pigment and ethanol levels influenced the optical properties and acidity affected the microhardness of composite resin.

Introdução: A osteoporose é considerada um grave problema de saúde pública em todo o mundo. No Brasil ainda não há dados estatísticos sobre a real incidência desta doença. Os glicocorticóides representam uma classe de drogas muito usada, sendo que podem influenciar significativamente a massa óssea. Entretanto, após tratamento com glicocorticóides em ratos, esses podem ou não apresentar alterações na massa óssea. Objetivo: Avaliar a eficácia da administração de dexametasona ou metilprednisolona em produzir osteoporose em ratas. Métodos: Vinte e quatro ratas, oriundas do biotério da Faculdade de Medicina de Itajubá, foram utilizadas e divididas em três grupos: controle, metilprednisolona e dexametasona. Foram avaliados íons e proteínas totais sanguíneos e feita a análise histopatológica de tecido ósseo. Resultados e conclusão: Pela análise histológica da espessura trabecular óssea, houve redução da massa óssea dos grupos tratados com glicocorticóides em comparação com o grupo controle, evidenciando o sucesso da indução de osteoporose. Além disso, houve uma maior redução da massa óssea no grupo tratado com dexametasona, em comparação com o grupo tratado com metilprednisolona. A análise bioquímica de cálcio, fósforo, magnésio e proteínas totais não sofreram diferença significativa entres os grupos, não sendo um bom marcador para remodelamento ósseo e para diagnóstico de osteoporose.Evaluating the Effectiveness of Dexamethasone or Methylprednisolone to Produce Osteoporosis in RatsIntroduction: Osteoporosis is considered a serious public health problem in worldwide. In Brazil we do not have statistics on the real disease incidence. Glucocorticoids are a class of drugs widely used, and can significantly influence bone mass. However, after treatment with glucocorticoids in rats, these may or may not show changes in bone mass. Objective: Evaluating the effectiveness of dexamethasone or methylprednisolone to produce osteoporosis in rats. Methods: Twenty-four rats, originated from the vivarium of the Faculty of Medicine Itajubá were used and divided into three groups: control, methylprednisolone and dexamethasone. Ions was evaluated blood and histopathology of bone tissue. Results and conclusion: by histologic analysis of trabecular bone thickness, a reduction of the mass bone in the groups treated with glucocorticoids compared with the group control, demonstrating the successful induction of osteoporosis. Furthermore, there was a greater reduction in bone mass in the group treated with dexamethasone compared with the group treated with methylprednisolone. The analysis biochemistry of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and total protein did not undergo significant difference among the groups, there is a good marker for bone remodeling and osteoporosis diagnosis.

Objective: To determine the differences of self-perception of halitosis and oral hygiene practices among the medical and dental undergraduate students. Methodology: A cross-sectional study conducted over duration of 9 months amongst the medical and dental undergraduate students of Bahria University Medical and Dental College. The questionnaires were distributed to 298 students. Questionnaire employed for this study was adopted and modified from the study conducted by Khalid Almas et al. Descriptive statistics were checked by means of percentages and frequency for all variables. Chi-square test was applied to check significant difference among the responses given by the medical and dental undergraduate students. Results: The response rate for the survey was about 85%. 55% of dental and 17 % of medical students were able to smell their breath. About having examination by dentist about 73% of medical students agreed as compared to 53% of dental students. Both medical and dental students preferred having examination done by the dentist. For management of halitosis, dentist was preferred by 62% of the dental students, while 97% of the medical students did not agree. 62% of the dental students preferred using traditional medications, while 82% of the medical students preferred using self-medications for treatment. Conclusion: The results suggest that there is not a high level of agreement among dental and medical students concerning the detection and management of halitosis. Although large percent of the respondents claimed to be aware of dentistry, our findings revealed low level of knowledge and attitude to Dentistry by the medical undergraduate students. Efforts should be made towards closing this knowledge gap to attain effective oral health.

A study of oral hygiene condition in primary school children based on Fedorov-Volodkina index has revealed that children do not clean their teeth properly enough and the average indicator of the studied group is unsatisfactory. The study based on children’s age indicates that the best oral hygiene condition is found in children aged 9 (satisfactory), whereas the worst – in children aged 8 (unsatisfactory). This, in our opinion, is due to the period of frontal teeth eruption and the discomfort associated with such process. Children clean the frontal area not properly. As children grow older, their personal hygiene skills improve as evidenced by the findings of comparing 6- and 9-year-olds’ indices (р<0.05). It was determined that each child’s index by Green-Vermillion and obtained results allows assessing the condition of oral cavity and cleaning skills. It has been identified significant differences in the oral hygiene condition in children who suffer from caries and in children with healthy teeth. Thus, before teeth brushing 6-year-old children without caries had unsatisfactory oral hygiene condition, children with caries –poor oral hygiene condition, 7-year old children – unsatisfactory one, 8-year-old children – unsatisfactory and poor, 9-year-old children – satisfactory and unsatisfactory respectively. The poorest oral hygiene condition was observed with 6-year-olds with caries. It has been assessed that dental tartar based on the studied indices. The study has revealed insufficient oral hygiene of the frontal and lateral jaw areas in children of primary school. This phenomenon creates cariogenic situation in the oral cavity. Having studied oral hygiene condition in children, it was offered by us to brush teeth with the toothbrush and toothpaste which they use at home. They brushed their teeth under the supervision, but without dentist’s management. Observed results were described in this paper. After brushing, oral hygiene condition has been studied again. When assessing Fedorov-Volodkina index, it was not observed any improvement of the index after teeth brushing in children without caries. In 6-, 7-, and 8-year-old children oral hygiene was unsatisfactory, whereas in 9-year-old children it was satisfactory. Oral hygiene improvement was observed in children who have caries. In 6-year-old children – from poor to unsatisfactory, in 7-, 8-, and 9-year-old children it remained at the same unsatisfactory level, but hygiene index indicators probably decreased (р<0.05). The findings indicate that children with caries do not pay attention to oral hygiene, whereas teeth brushing improve the studied index. Green-Vermillion index enables to determine oral hygiene condition in frontal and lateral jaw areas. After individual teeth brushing this hygiene index values slightly improve compared to original values, however, no significant difference in hygiene level was identified. Findings from studying various hygiene indices indicate that children with caries pay attention to brushing frontal jaw area and absolutely no attention to brushing lateral jaw areas with first permanent molars that have recently erupted, and they are not enough mineralized, and are prone to caries at this age. This encourages a study of teeth brushing skills of children of primary school using the suggested form of child oral hygiene skills followed by development of oral hygiene recommendations for the children of this age group with parental involvement.

Objective:to evaluate the prevalence of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) in Dentistry students froma private college in Northern Minas Gerais. Materials and Methods:a questionnaire on nutritional habits and oral hygiene was applied, followed by a clinical evaluation of those who had NCCLs with previously calibrated evaluators. The sample consisted of348 students, from the 4th to the 9th semesters;175 students answered the questionnaire and 17 presented NCCLs. The present work was approved by the Research Ethics Committee under number2.000.236. Results:there was no significant difference regarding the sex of the interviewees, with a higher concentration of NCCLsinthe students of the 9th semester, approximately72.73% of the total number of individuals evaluated. There was a higher concentration of injuries in individuals between 18 and 25 years old, approximately81.82% of the total sample. Conclusion:the studyreinforces that NCCLs are multifactorial. Hence, both diet and parafunctional habits can influence the involvement/worsening of injuries,which are present among studentswho are the object of this study.
