There is an increasing number of metabolic syndrome (MetS) patients worldwide, and there is no exception in South Korea. The risk complications of metabolic syndrome have been investigated by many previous research studies, while no data on any current trends of MetS are available. Therefore, the present study investigates the recent prevalence of MetS and its associated risk complications in Korean adults by using the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). The Survey respondents (n = 4744) were adults over the age of 30, and they had participated in KNHANES 2016, which is a health survey of a national representative sample of non-institutionalized civilian South Koreans. The cross-tabulation analysis was applied to figure out the general characteristics impacting on the prevalence of MetS; furthermore, the odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using multivariate logistic regression analysis were presented for the risk complications of MetS. Findings from this study indicated that subjective health status, family structure, age, income level, use of nutrition labelling and gender showed significant connections with the prevalence of MetS. The risk diseases, stroke (OR = 2.174, 95% CI = 1.377–3.433, p < 0.01), myocardial infarction (MI) (OR = 2.667, 95% CI = 1.474–4.824, p < 0.01) and diabetes (OR = 6.533, 95% CI = 4.963, p < 0.001) were explored and verified attributable to the prevalence of MetS. The findings in this study suggest that sociodemographic characteristics-concentrated strategies are vital to prevent the prevalence of MetS in South Korea, and relative risk complications ought to be cautiously dealt with as well.

Background—Dyslipidemia is one of the prominent risk factors for cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of death worldwide. Dyslipidemia has various causes, including metabolic capacity, genetic problems, physical inactivity, and dietary habits. This study aimed to determine the association between dyslipidemia and exposure to heavy metals in adults. Methods—Using data from the seventh Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016–2017), 5345 participants aged ≥20 years who were tested for heavy metal levels were analyzed in this study. Multiple logistic regression was conducted to assess the factors affecting the prevalence of dyslipidemia. Results—The risks of dyslipidemia among all and male participants with mercury (Hg) levels of ≥2.75 μg/L (corresponding to the Korean average level) were 1.273 and 1.699 times higher than in those with levels of <2.75 μg/L, respectively. The factors that significantly affected the dyslipidemia risk were age, household income, body mass index, and subjective health status in both males and females. Conclusions—In adult males, exposure to Hg at higher-than-average levels was positively associated with dyslipidemia. These results provide a basis for targeted prevention strategies for dyslipidemia using lifestyle guidelines for reducing Hg exposure and healthy behavioral interventions.

This study explores the association between soft-drink intake and obesity, depression, and subjective health status in male and female adults. Soft-drink consumption has become a serious public health issue worldwide. Participants of this study were selected (n = 3086) from the respondents in the Seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016 and divided into the non-soft-drink group (men, 502; women, 1117) and the soft-drink group (men, 684; women, 783). Soft-drink intake data were obtained, using a validated quantitative food frequency questionnaire and the 24 h dietary recall. Total energy intake and fat density were significantly higher, but the nutrient densities of carbohydrate, total dietary fiber, and micronutrients were significantly lower in the soft-drink group than in the non-soft-drink group. In men, soft-drink intake was found to be significantly associated with a lower risk of depression. Conversely, in women, soft-drink intake was found to be significantly associated with the higher risks of depression, obesity, and poor subjective health status. Therefore, less frequent soft-drink intake may prevent obesity and depression in Korean women.

Purpose: Here we aimed to examine the association of breastfeeding (BF) with the metabolic syndrome (Mets) and its components among premenopausal parous Korean women.Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study on 7,116 Korean women by using nationally representative data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, between 2010 and 2016. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed for examining the association of BF with Mets and its components.Results: A total 7,116 women were selected for this study. Mets was present in 12.9% of the study participants. The prevalence of Mets in the BF group (12.38%) was lower than that of the non-BF group (14.69 %) (p<0.05). The prevalence of hypertension and hypertriglyceridemia was significantly higher in the non-BF group compared to that of the BF group. For each of Mets components, the total cholestrol level and systolic blood pressure were significantly higher in the non-BF group, compared to those of the BF group (p<0.05). The BF group was associated with a decreased risk of Mets (odds ratio [OR], 0.82; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.68–0.99). and lower risks of hypo-high-density lipoprotein-cholesterolemia (OR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.62–0.68), compared to those of the non-BF group.Conclusion: BF is an important factor in reducing the risks of Mets. These results provide fundamental evidence for the establishment of policies for promoting BF.

While metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with frailty, the correlation of serum lactate dehydrogenase (sLDH) and frailty with MetS remain uncertain. To investigate the relationship between sLDH and frail components in the US with MetS. A total of 4,066 participants aged 40–90 years were assessed from the database of the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1988–1994. The participants were classified into MetS and non-MetS groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis with four models were performed to assess the odds ratio (OR) of the divided tertiles of sLDH levels with frailty, and frail components including slow walking (SW), weakness, exhaustion, low physical activity (LPA), and low body weight (LBW). Higher sLDH levels were positively associated with frailty in the MetS group (p = 0.024) but not in non-MetS group (p = 0.102). After covariate adjustments, the OR of frailty in the upper two tertiles compared to the lowest tertile and revealed statistical significance (p < 0.05). Frail components of SW, weakness, exhaustion, and LPA were associated with higher sLDH (p < 0.05) except for LBW in MetS and non-MetS groups. The results demonstrated the strong association of higher sLDH levels and frailty among US individuals with MetS.

Abstract Context Little is known about the physical health of individuals with 46,XY disorders of sex development (DSD). Objective To assess physical and reported subjective health of individuals with XY DSD. Design and methods As part of the dsd-LIFE study, patients with an XY DSD condition were analyzed in different diagnosis groups for metabolic parameters, comorbidities, metabolic syndrome, bone outcomes, and reported subjective health. Findings were evaluated by descriptive statistics. Results A total of 222 patients with XY DSD were included with a mean age of 28.8±12.2 years, mean height of 175.3±7.7 cm, mean weight of 74.3±20.0 kg and mean BMI of 24.1±6.0 kg/m 2. Obesity rate was not increased when descriptively compared to Eurostat data. Fourteen patients had metabolic syndrome (14/175; 8.0%). In descriptive comparison to data from the DECODE study and WHO, subjects fared better in the categories waist circumference, glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein. Of participants with available bone health data, 19/122 (15.6%) patients had a Z-score ≤ - 2.0 at lumbar spine indicating lowered bone mineral density (BMD). Mostly gonadectomized individuals with complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS) and no estrogen therapy had lowered BMD at lumbar spine. Individuals with XY DSD performed poorly in the category subjective health in descriptive comparison to Eurostat data. Conclusion Participants reported a lower subjective health status compared to Eurostat data but their overall metabolic health status was good. Decreased BMD at lumbar spine was especially present in gonadectomized individuals with CAIS and no estrogen therapy.

Background/Objectives: This study developed a prediction model with taking into account various factors that could affect the life satisfaction of the elderly in South Korea by using data mining techniques.Methods/Statistical analysis: This study analyzed the data of 2,111 elderly (879 males and 1, 232 females) who were equal to or older than 60 among 7,761 people completed the Seoul Welfare Pane Study 2010. The life satisfaction, a result variable, was classified as ‘satisfactory’, ‘normal’, and ‘dissatisfactory’ based on the question of ‘how are you satisfied with your current life?’The latent factors of the life satisfaction of the elderly were explored by using the neural network. The decision tree model was constructed by using the classification and regression tree (CART) algorithm.Findings: Subjective friendship, subjective health status, subjective family relationship, and the highest level of education were significant classification variables. The most predominant predictive variable was subjective friendship. Moreover, it was predicted that ‘the elderly with good subjective friendship and subjective health’ and ‘the elderly with good subjective friendship, subjective health, and family relationship and whose highest level of education was higher than middle school graduate’ would be groups with high life satisfaction.Improvements/Applications: It is necessary to expand the perceived social network support for promoting the family relationship and friendship as well as the health enhancement in order to improve the life satisfaction of the elderly
