Synthesis, single-crystal X-ray determination diffraction and FT-IR, NMR (1H, 13C, 19F and 205Tl), UV–vis, and luminescence spectra characteristics were described for series of thallium(I) compounds: thallium(I) triflate (Tl(OTf)), 1:1 co-crystals of thallium(I) triflate and tropolone (Htrop), Tl(OTf)·Htrop, as well as simple thallium(I) chelates: Tl(trop) (1), Tl(5-metrop) (2), Tl(hino) (3), with Htrop, 5-methyltropolone (5-meHtrop), 4-isopropyltropolone (hinokitiol, Hhino), respectively, and additionally more complex {Tl@[Tl(hino)]6}(OTf) (4) compound. Comparison of their antimicrobial activity with selected lead(II) and bismuth(III) analogs and free ligands showed that only bismuth(III) complexes demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity, from two- to fivefold larger than the free ligands.

Four cationic Ir(III) complexes, [Ir(dpq)2(bpy)]PF6 (1), [Ir(dpq)2(phen)]PF6 (2), [Ir(tfapq)2- (bpy)]PF6 (3), and [Ir(tfapq)2(phen)]PF6 (4) (dpqH = 2,4-diphenylquinoline, tfapqH = 2-(4ʹ-trifluoroacetylphenyl)- 4-phenylquinoline, bpy = 2,2ʹ-bipyridine, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) have been synthesized and fully characterized. The structure of 4 was also confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The electron-acceptor character of the trifluoroacetyl unit leads to a reduced HOMO-LUMO gap and consequently a red-shift of the UV/Vis absorption and luminescence spectra. The solvophobic character of the trifluoroacetyl unit gives rise to a molecule assembly in solution.

Three new copper(II) complexes, [Cu(LH)2]Br2 (1), [Cu(LH)2]NCS2 (2), and [Cu(LH)2](NO3)2 (3), where LH is the zwitterionic form of 2-bromo-6-((2-(isopropylamino)ethylimino)methyl)phenol (HL), were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR and UV-vis spectroscopy. The structures of the complexes were further confirmed by single crystal X-ray structure determination. All compounds are mononuclear copper(II) complexes. The Cu atoms in the complexes are coordinated by two imino N and two phenolate O atoms from two LH ligands, forming square planar coordination. The compounds were assayed for their antimicrobial activities.

The influence of ionising radiation on the physicochemical properties of meropenem trihydrate in solid state was studied for doses of e-beam radiation: 25 kGy and 400 kGy. In the first part of our studies, we evaluated the possibility of applying radiosterilization to obtain sterile meropenem. No changes for meropenem irradiated with a dose of 25 kGy, the dose required to attain sterility, was confirmed in the results of spectroscopic (FT-IR), thermal (DSC, TGA) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) studies. The radiation dose of 25 kGy produces no more than about 1500 ppm of radical defects. The chromatographic studies of irradiated meropenem in solutions did not show any chemical degradation. Moreover, the antimicrobial activity of meropenem irradiated with the dose of 25 kGy was unchanged. Based on the received results, we can conclude that radiostelization is a promising, alternative method for obtaining sterile meropenem. In the second part of the research, meropenem was exposed to e-beam radiation at the 400 kGy dose rate. It was confirmed, that reducing of antimicrobial activity could be connected with the degradation of β-lactam ring and changes in the trans-hydroxyethyl group. Apart from chemical changes, changes in the physical stability of irradiated meropenem (400 kGy) was also observed.

AbstractAlthough thienopyridines attract attention because of their biological activities, they have not been used as ligands in coordination compounds. Thieno[2,3-b]pyridine was prepared by known procedures; by reduction of 2-nitrothiophene, and reaction of the resulting 2-thienyl ammonium salt with malondialdehyde tetramethylacetal in the presence of zinc chloride. The same procedure was used for the preparation of a new derivative, 2-methylthieno[2,3-b]pyridine, starting from 2-methyl-5-nitrothiophene. The thienopyridines were used in the synthesis of coordination compounds. Chlorides, isothiocyanates, acetates, and chloroacetates of copper(II), nickel(II), or cobalt(II) were used as starting salts. The prepared complexes were characterized by elemental analysis and FT IR. Structures of the four complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

rac-Bis{μ-trans-2,2′-[pentane-1,5-diylbis(azanediyl)]ditroponato}dipalladium(II), [Pd2(C19H20N2O2)2], has been synthesized and fully characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction,1H NMR, FT–IR and mass spectroscopy. Thetranscoordination, vaulted structure andanticonformation have been unequivocally established from the X-ray diffraction studies. This is the first example of a bis(aminotroponato)palladium complex. In the crystalline state, the molecule has twofold symmetry and each molecular unit undergoes intermolecular offset π-stacking of the tropone rings to afford heterochiral interpenetrating dimers that are aligned in a lamellar manner with a herringbone packing motif.

In this paper, nanocrystalline YVO4:Eu3+ powders have been successfully synthesized via high-temperature solution-phase synthesis process. The nanocrystalline YVO4:Eu3+ particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV/Vis absorption spectra and luminescence spectra, luminescence decay curve and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) respectively. The as-prepared nanocrystalline YVO4:Eu3+ particles are well crystallized with ellipsoidal morphology. The emission of YVO4:Eu3+ particles show emission originating from the 5D0 level, with 5D0–7F2 at 616 nm as the most prominent group. The excitation spectrumfits basically with the absorption spectrumfromthe vanadate ions. FT-IR and XPS spectra indicate that the surface ligands of nanocrystalline particles were oleic acid and oleylamine. The lifetime for the luminescence of Eu3+ in the as-prepared YVO4:Eu3+ samples are shorter than that of the bulk material due to the absorption of organic ligands on the nanoparticle surface.

AbstractL-cysteine hydrogen fluoride (LCHF) single crystals were grown from aqueous solution. Single crystal X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, UV-Vis-NIR, and TG-DTA were used to test the grown crystals. The specimen dielectric and mechanical behaviors were also studied. Powder X-ray diffraction of the grown crystal was recorded and indexed. The optical properties of the LCHF crystal were determined using UV-Vis spectroscopy. It was found that the optical band gap of LCHF was 4.8 eV. The crystal functional groups were identified using FT-IR. Second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency of the LCHF was three times higher than that of KDP. The dielectric constant, dielectric loss and AC conductivity were measured at different frequencies and temperatures.

A mixed ligand Cd(II) complex [Cd(IsoPht)(TEA)H2O]·3H2O was synthesized for the first time by using isophthalic acid (H2IsoPht) and tetradentate triethanolamine (TEA) and characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction, FT-IR, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). This novel complex crystallizes in the triclinic system with P-1 space group and distorted monocapped trigonal prismatic geometry. The Cd(II) has seven coordinates with bidentate IsoPht, a TEA in the tetradentate mode, and an aqua ligand. The fluorescence properties of the Cd(II) complex and TEA ligand were investigated at room temperature. The present Cd(II) complex was also tested for its antimicrobial activity by in vitro agar diffusion method against some Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and a fungus.
