Phellinus linteus is a popular medicinal mushroom that is widely used in China, Korea, Japan, and other Asian countries. P. linteus comprises various bioactive components, such as polysaccharides, triterpenoids, phenylpropanoids, and furans, and has proven to be an effective therapeutic agent in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment and the prevention of various diseases. A number of studies have reported that P. linteus possesses many biological activities useful for pharmacological applications, including anticancer, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antioxidative, and antifungal activities, as well as antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, and neuroprotective effects. This review article briefly presents the recent progress made in understanding the bioactive components, biological activities, pharmacological applications, safety, and prospects of P. linteus, and provides helpful references and promising directions for further studies of P. linteus.

Steroidal pyrazolines constitute an interesting and promising scaffold for drug discovery as they display diverse chemical reactivity and a wide range of biological activities. Literature reports indicate potent anticancer potential of steroidal pyrazolines along with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activities. Strong neuroprotective effects with steroids possessing pyrazoline moiety have also been observed. Among all the therapeutically active steroidal pyrazolines, D-ring-substituted derivatives are highly potent and the least toxic. The current and futuristic research approaches in this area are focused towards the exploration of this promising scaffold to develop molecules with widespread pharmacological activities. This review article mainly covers the synthetic and pharmacological aspects of steroidal pyrazolines, which will assist the medicinal chemists working in this area in their scientific endeavors.

Gedunin is an important limonoid present in several genera of the Meliaceae family, mainly in seeds. Several biological activities have been attributed to gedunin, including antibacterial, insecticidal, antimalarial, antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and neuroprotective effects. The discovery of gedunin as a heat shock protein (Hsp) inhibitor represented a very important landmark for its application as a biological therapeutic agent. The current study is a critical literature review based on the several biological activities so far described for gedunin, its therapeutic effect on some human diseases, and future directions of research for this natural compound.

AbstractThe aldo-keto reductase (AKR) superfamily consists of over 150 protein members sharing similar structure and enzymatic activities. To date, 13 human AKRs have been identified, and they participate in xenobiotic detoxification, biosynthesis and metabolism. Increasing evidence suggests the involvement of human AKR proteins in cancer development, progression and treatment. Some proteins demonstrate multiple functional features in addition to being a reductase for carbonyl groups. This review article discusses the most recent progress made in the study of humans AKRs.

Phellinus linteus is known to be a medicinal mushroom which is very good to human health. They are used as medicinal mushroom in many Asian countries such as Japan, Korea, China, Thailand and Vietnam. Because of long time growth and over-havest by humans in natural conditions, they are artificially cultured in these countries. There were advances of liquid culture of mushroom such as time saving and scaleable in culture in comparison with culturing of mushroom in decaying wood. In this study, Phellinus linteus is cultured in optimum liquid medium, lyophilized, ground into fine powder and evaluated for microbiological and total of Asen and Lead to ensure the biomass product will meet safety standards for users. Results are as follows: Total of anaerobic bacteria 2,2 × 10­4 CFU/g, Coliforms< 1,0 × 101 CFU/g, Coagulase positive with Staphylococci <1,0×101 CFU/g, total amount of yeast-mold < 1,0 × 101 CFU/g, not detected of E.coli, Clostridium perfringens and Salmonella spp.. Furthermore, we did not find any Asen and Lead which are supposed to remain in our sample.

Abstract Protein ubiquitylation plays important roles in many biological activities. Protein ubiquitylation is a unique process that is mainly controlled by ubiquitin ligases. The ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) is the main process to degrade short-lived and unwanted proteins in eukaryotes. Many components in the UPS are attractive drug targets. Recent studies indicated that ubiquitin ligases can be employed as tools in proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs) for drug discovery. In this review article, we will discuss the recent progress of the application of ubiquitin ligases in the PROTAC drug design. We will also discuss advantages and existing problems of PROTACs. Moreover, we will propose a few principles for selecting ubiquitin ligases in PROTAC applications.

Pyrimidine heterocycles are proven to be biologically active heterocycles, found in many biological systems, displaying a broad spectrum of biological activities including anticancer, anxiolytic, antioxidant, antiviral, antifungal, anticonvulsant, antidepressant and antibacterial activities. Recently, various synthetic approaches, synthetic strategy, the variation of substrates and study devoted towards the evaluation of biological activities for the pyrimidine heterocycles have been reported in the literature. This review article describes the synthesis of various biologically interesting pyrimidine heterocyclic ring systems using various nitrogen building blocks.

Ginseng is one of the most popular traditional Chinese medicines that have been widely used in China and other Asian countries for thousands of years. Ginsenosides are the unique bioactive saponins occurring in ginseng, and their biological activities have been extensively investigated. A large amount of ginseng residue is produced as waste product due to its applications in manufacturing functional food products, even though it may still contain bioactive components. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the hypoglycemic activities of American ginseng extraction residue (AmR) via fermentation with Ganoderma lucidum. Our results showed that the total phenolic contents and β-glucosidase activity of AmR profoundly increased after fermentation with G. lucidum. In 3T3-L1 adipocytes, stimulation of glucose uptake by treatment with AmR was not significant, while fermented AmR (FAmR) exhibited insulin-like glucose-uptake-stimulatory effects. Importantly, the hypoglycemic effects of FAmR were positively associated with the amount of the deglycosylated minor ginsenosides Rg1, Rg3, and compound K. Taken together, our current findings suggest that bioconversion of AmR by fermentation with G. lucidum may be a feasible and eco-friendly approach to developing a functional ingredient for the management of diabetes, while also resolving the problem of ginseng waste.

World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that 80% of the population of developing countries use traditional medicines, mostly natural plant products, for their primary health care needs. In the past few decades, the medicinal value of plants has been assumed more important dimension owing largely to the discovery that extracts from plants contain not only primary metabolites but also a diverse array of secondary metabolites with antioxidant potential. Medicinal plants are potential sources of natural compounds with biological activities and therefore attract the attention of researchers worldwide. Antioxidants are vital substances which possess ability to protect the body from damage due to free radical-induced oxidative stress. The purpose of current study was to determine the antioxidant activities and bioactive components of Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) (Samonsabar) seeds by using UV Visible Spectrophotometer (UV-Vis) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Aqueous extract of fennel seeds showed more antioxidant activity (IC50: 0.28 ug/ml) than ethanolic extract (IC50: 0.83 ug/ml) and comparable to standard antioxidant, ascorbic acid (IC50: 0.59 ug/ml). GC-MS analysis was fruitful in identification of compounds based on peak area, retention time, molecular formula, molecular weight, MS Fragmentions and pharmacological actions. Ten bioactive phytochemical compounds from aqueous extracts and 11 from ethanolic extract of fennel seeds were identified. These findings indicated that fennel seeds are potential to provide preventive properties against oxidative damage. These results will give scientific information for quality control of indigenous drug to herbal medicine users and local practitioners using fennel for different types of ailments
