The effective utilization of fly ash (FA) as a raw material for ceramics production is performed on the FA-kaolin mixtures containing kaolins 10% by mass. The mixtures in comparison with FA and three raw kaolins were annealed to mullite ceramics at temperatures of 1000, 1100, 1200 and 1300 °C. The main aims were to contribute to the discussion on the effect of impurity of Na,K-feldspars in kaolins and Fe2O3 in FA on sintering procedure, porous ceramics properties and mullite structural properties. The phases were characterized using X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry DTA/TGA methods. Mercury intrusion porosimetry was used for characterization of porosity of ceramic samples. Results evidenced the influence of feldspars in kaolins and Fe2O3 in FA on the sintering temperatures and properties of mullite ceramics. The fully FA-based ceramic sintered at 1100 °C exhibited post-sintering properties of bulk density 2.1 g/cm3; compressive strength 77.5 MPa; and porosity, 2% in comparison with the FA/kaolin-based ceramics properties of bulk density 2.2 g/cm3; compressive strength, 60–65 MPa; and porosity from 9.3 to 16.4% influenced by Na,K-feldspars. The best structural and mechanical characteristics were found for the FAK3 sample, supported by the high content of kaolinite and orthoclase in the kaolin K3 additive. The FAK3 annealed at 1100 °C exhibited good compressive strength of 87.6 MPa at a porosity of 10.6% and density of 2.24 g/cm3 and annealed at 1300 °C the compressive strength of 41.3 MPa at a porosity of 19.2% and density of 1.93 g/cm3.

This paper is focused on the effect of treatment of fly ash after selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) with tannin on autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) production in order to reduce or stop ammonia leakage from the fresh mixture due to its alkalinity. A pure form of tannin and a tannin-based product „Farmatan“ were used as a treatment in dosage ranging from 0,5 g – 3 g of agent per 1 kg of fly ash. Efficient dosage was determined at 2 wt.% of fly ash by the speed of an indicator change due to gaseous ammonia diluted in water. The rheological properties of fresh mixtures were observed by consistency test in Viskomat showing that Farmatan causes delay of hydration. The results of bulk density and compressive strength testing revealed that Farmatan causes an increase of bulk density and at higher amount decreases the compressive strength because of thermal crack formation due to combined effect of delayed hydration and thixotropy. Using x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis there were no differences in phase composition observed.

AbstractCordierite (Mg2Al4Si5O18), Mullite (Al4+2xSi2-2xO10-x) and Cordierite-Mullite ceramic materials were obtained from a stoichiometric mixture of coal fly ash (CFA) as a source of SiO2 and Al2O3, plus high-purity MgO and Al2O3. The starting stoichiometric mixtures were homogenized, and then uniaxially pressed, cold isostatically pressed, and sintered at 1200-1600 °C for 2-5 h. The sintered materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Vickers microhardness, density and four-point flexural strength. In general, the desired phases tended to form in the composites at temperatures of 1350 or 1400 °C, with a considerable amount of glassy phase developing from 3 h onwards at one of those two temperatures, depending on the composite composition. The microstructure of the composites consisted of a matrix of Cordierite and interwoven needles of Mullite. The bulk density decreased, while the flexural strength and the Vickers microhardness increased with increasing nominal content of Mullite in the composites. A synergistic effect taking place between Cordierite and Mullite enhances the mechanical properties of the composites.

This study reports the effect of natural dolomite addition to fly ash and the mechanical activation of this blend on the geopolymerization process. Dolomite was replaced with fly ash at 1, 3, 5, and 10 wt.%. Geopolymers were synthesized at ambient temperature using NaOH solution as an alkaline agent. The geopolymerization process, reactivity of the raw material, compressive strength, and microstructure were studied using X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. It was shown that blending fly ash with dolomite and mechanical activation improved the geopolymer strength, especially during the early age of curing. For geopolymers prepared using a 90% fly ash + 10% dolomite blend cured for 7 d, the strengths were 8.2-, 2.3-, and 1.4-fold higher than those for geopolymers prepared using 100% FA for 30 s, 180 s, and 400 s milling times, respectively. A simple method for evaluating the increments of mechanical activation, carbonate additives, and the synergistic effect in the increase in the compressive strength of the composite geopolymer is proposed.

Acicular mullite porous ceramics were synthesis by high-temperature sintering technique. In the present work, Kaolin and industrial aluminum hydroxide were selected as raw materials, AlF3 used as catalyst. XRD and SEM were used to detect the crystal type and microstructure of prepared mullite ceramics, respectively. The influences of sintering temperature on the growth of crystal, the apparent porosity and compressive strength of the resulting porous ceramics were investigated. The results indicate when sintering temperature ranges from 1250 ~ 1400°C, much acicular mullite crystal appeared in the resulting ceramics. The apparent porosity, the compressive strength and the morphology of the mullite whisker changed obviously with the sintering temperature. When sintering temperature is 1400°C, the porous ceramics showed the maximum compressive strength of ~28 MPa and the maximum apparent porosity of ~63%.

Abstract Demand for water and energy supply has dramatically increased the amount of drinking water sludge (DW) and fly ash (FA) annually. These wastes should be properly managed and disposed to protect any potential contamination to surrounding ecosystem. Both by-products can be potentially recycled as raw material for brick development. This study aimed to examine the influence of fly ash content on mechanical properties of drinking water sludge brick at low firing temperature of 500°C. Different ratios of FA content were added to the DWS ranged between 0 and 45%. Brick sample was moulded in 215 mm x 102.5 mm x 65 mm dimension. Samples were air-dried prior to firing at 500°C for 3 hours in a furnace. Basic characterization of DW and FA showed pH of 5.76 and 10.1 with organic contents of 8.42% and 1.14%, respectively. Clay and silt fractions were dominant in DWS while silt more apparent than sand and clay in FA. The volume changes and water absorption of the brick samples decreased with increasing FA content. For the water absorption of the brick increased back as 40% of FA content. The density and compressive strength dropped with the increasing amount of FA. The compressive strength of brick experienced with sulphate attack also decreased with increasing FA content. The results suggested that further study are needed to improve the compressive strength of the studied bricks.

The purpose of this study is to characterize Lampung iron sand and to conduct preliminary experiments on the TiO2 synthesis which can be used for the manufacturing of functional food packaging. The iron sand from South Lampung Regency, Lampung Province that will be utilized as raw material. The experiment was initiated by sieving the iron sand on 80, 100, 150, 200 and 325 mesh sieves. Analysis using X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) to determine the element content and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) to observe the mineralization of the iron sand was conducted. The experiment was carried out through the stages of leaching, precipitation, and calcination. Roasting was applied firstly by putting the iron sand into the muffle furnace for 5 hours at a temperature of 700°C. Followed by leaching using HCl for 48 hours and heated at 105°C with a stirring speed of 300 rpm. The leaching solution was filtered with filtrate and solid residue as products. The solid residue was then leached using 10% H2O2 solution. The leached filtrate was heated at 105°C for 40 minutes resulting TiO2 precipitates (powder). Further, the powder was calcined and characterized. Characterization of raw material using XRF shows the major elements of Fe, Ti, Mg, Si, Al and Ca. The highest Ti content is found in mesh 200 with 9.6%, while iron content is about 80.7%. While from the XRD analysis, it shows five mineral types namely magnetite (Fe3O4), Rhodonite (Mn, Fe, Mg, Ca) SiO3, Quart (SiO2), Ilmenite (FeOTiO2) and Rutile (TiO2). The preliminary experiment showed that the Ti content in the synthesized TiO2 powder is 21.2%. The purity of TiO2 is low due to the presence of Fe metal which is dissolved during leaching, so that prior to precipitation purification is needed to remove impurities such as iron and other metals.

Hardwood is wood from angiosperm trees. The characteristic of hardwood include flowers, endosperm within seeds and the production of fruits that contain the seeds. This paper aims to discuss the preparation and characterization of cellulose obtained from hardwood. The hardwood Merbau (Intsia bijuga) was chosen as raw material in this study. Alkaline treatment and delignification methods were used for the preparation of cellulose. Acid hydrolysis was employed to produce cellulose nanocrystal (CNC). The treated and untreated samples were characterized using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The final product, from both trated and untreated samples were then compared.

Porous ceramics were produced by compaction method of Nigerian clay and cassava starch. The samples were prepared by adding an amount from 5 to 30%wt of cassava starch into the clay and sintered at temperature of 900-1300°C. The influence of cassava starch content on the bulk density and apparent porosity was studied. The result of XRD and DTA/TGA shows that the optimum sintering temperature was found to be 1300°C. The percentage porosity increased from 12.87 to 43.95% while bulk density decreased from 2.16 to 1.46g/cm3 with the increase of cassava starch from 5 to 30%wt. The effect of sintering temperature and cassava starch content improved the microstructure in terms of porosity and the thermal properties of porous clay for various applications which requires a specific porosity.

Abstract Using tetra-n-butyl titanate as raw material and fly ash cenospheres (FAC) as carrier, the photocatalysts of Ag-TON/FAC were successfully prepared by solvothermal and in-situ hydrolysis method. These visible light photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fluorescence spectroscopy (FL) and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). In this study, methyl orange and ciprofloxacin were used as wastewater degradation targets to investigate the effect of the amount of titanium dioxide and the amount of Ag doping on the activity of photocatalysts. On the basis of this, the optimal ratio of TiO2 to FAC was 2:1 and the optimum doping ratio of Ag was determined to be 15 wt.%. The composite photocatalysts dispersed uniformly and were easy to recycle and reuse, which were benefits in fully utilizing the solar energy. The degradation efficiency remained at more than 60% after being renewed five times for MO and ciprofloxacin. The photocatalysts of Ag-TON/FAC can reduce the environmental burden caused by FAC also.

Abstract This study discusses the use of fly ash waste from coal burning on the manufacture of PCC (Portland composite cement) at PT. XYZ Lampung. The purpose of this research is to look at the technical studies and the efficiency of raw materials in the use of fly ash in cement making, in this case PCC cement (Portland Composite Cement). The steps taken in analyzing the data in this study were viewed from a technical aspect by means of a physical test, namely the cement compressive strength test at the age of 3 days, 7 days, and 28 days using the Compression Testing Machine. This test was conducted to see the comparison of the compressive strength of PCC cement using limestone and fly ash as raw materials, then calculate the difference in raw material costs in the year before and after the replacement of limestone with fly ash. The results showed that cement with the addition of fly ash after 3 days, 7 days and 28 days had an increased compressive strength value, which increased 21.69%, 16.07% and 8.05% respectively of the compressive strength of cement using limestone. The use of fly ash as a substitute for limestone has an effect on the cost of raw materials, where the difference between the cost of raw materials in 2019 and the cost of raw materials in 2018 is Rp. 39,440,952,074.
