This study reports the effect of natural dolomite addition to fly ash and the mechanical activation of this blend on the geopolymerization process. Dolomite was replaced with fly ash at 1, 3, 5, and 10 wt.%. Geopolymers were synthesized at ambient temperature using NaOH solution as an alkaline agent. The geopolymerization process, reactivity of the raw material, compressive strength, and microstructure were studied using X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. It was shown that blending fly ash with dolomite and mechanical activation improved the geopolymer strength, especially during the early age of curing. For geopolymers prepared using a 90% fly ash + 10% dolomite blend cured for 7 d, the strengths were 8.2-, 2.3-, and 1.4-fold higher than those for geopolymers prepared using 100% FA for 30 s, 180 s, and 400 s milling times, respectively. A simple method for evaluating the increments of mechanical activation, carbonate additives, and the synergistic effect in the increase in the compressive strength of the composite geopolymer is proposed.

This study presents the development of geopolymer bricks synthetized from industrial waste, including fly ash mixed with concrete residue containing aluminosilicate compound. The above two ingredients are mixed according to five ratios: 100:0, 95:5, 90:10, 85:15, and 80:20. The mixture's physico-mechanical properties, in terms of water absorption and the compressive strength of the geopolymer bricks, are investigated according to the TIS 168-2546 standard. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses are used to investigate the microstructure and the elemental and phase composition of the brick specimens. The results indicate that the combination of fly ash and concrete residue represents a suitable approach to brick production, as required by the TIS 168–2546 standard.

In this study, the geopolymer mortars were synthesized with fly ash (FA) and silica powder as aluminosilicate sources and a combination of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution, sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) solution and distilled water as alkaline activator. Commercial sago was used as a pore former in the mortars. The percentage of sago used were 10, 20 and 30 wt% of FA. The amount of added water used in each mixture was 5% by weight of FA, NaOH solution and Na2SiO3 solution. The formed geopolymer mortars were cured for 1, 3 and 7 days and sintered at 1000 °C. X-ray fluoresence (XRF) shown that FA contains higher amount of silica (SiO2) and alumina (Al2O3) which is important as aluminosilicate sources. The properties of the geopolymer mortars before and after sintered at 1000 °C have been investigated. The results show that geopolymer mortars with 10% of sago content with curing time of 7 days and sintered at 1000 °C give the highest compressive strength of 13.5 MPa.

The accumulation of fly ash leads to severe problems in ecological environments. Various ways to excite the activity of fly ash in Portland cement based cementitious materials have been carried out for many years. In the present study, effect of large volume of fly ash in phosphate cement was studied. Dead burned magnesia, two phosphates (monoammonium phosphate and monosodium phosphate), and fly ash were used. The fabricated cement mortar specimens with different fly ash dosages were cured for 28 days in the lab air. Compressive strength was determined in 1d, 3d, 7d and 28d respectively. It is showed the compressive strength reduced with increase of fly ash content and increased with the curing time. After cured 28 days, the compressive strength of cement mortar developed to14MPa, when 80% fly ash was used. The reaction product, Na2HPO4•17H2O was found by X-ray diffraction analysis in sodium phosphate based cement. No ammonia gas was emitted and large volume of fly ash can be used in cement prepared from sodium phosphate. It is a new environmentally friendly cement material.

The sulfur concrete samples were prepared by the optimized process, which were mixed with cement, fly ash and slag, respectively. The influence of the type and content of filler on the compressive strength of sulfur concrete was studied. The phase and micromorphology of filler and sulfur mixture were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope, and the bonding mode was studied. The results show: the cement filler has the best effect on the compressive performance of sulfur concrete,and the compressive strength is 87.2 MPa by adding cement filler with the same quality as sulfur; there is no chemical reaction between filler and sulfur, and the filler is physically bonded to sulfur matrix.

Abstract The effect of alkali concentration and curing temperature regime on fly ash-based geopolymer pastes was investigated in this study by using NaOH solutions. Prismatic specimens were molded, cured at 65 °C and 85 °C and submitted to flexural and compressive strength tests. Unreacted fly ash and geopolymers were characterized by X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. In general, the mechanical strength was enhanced by increasing the molar concentration and the curing temperature. This trend was confirmed by thermogravimetric data. However, for a lower amount of NaOH there were no significant differences between the strength results. The mixture with the highest strength was obtained with the 16 M NaOH solution and curing temperature of 85 °C, which resulted in flexural strength of 4.20 MPa, compressive strength of 21.35 MPa and also the highest weight loss of 9.89%.

The effective utilization of fly ash (FA) as a raw material for ceramics production is performed on the FA-kaolin mixtures containing kaolins 10% by mass. The mixtures in comparison with FA and three raw kaolins were annealed to mullite ceramics at temperatures of 1000, 1100, 1200 and 1300 °C. The main aims were to contribute to the discussion on the effect of impurity of Na,K-feldspars in kaolins and Fe2O3 in FA on sintering procedure, porous ceramics properties and mullite structural properties. The phases were characterized using X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry DTA/TGA methods. Mercury intrusion porosimetry was used for characterization of porosity of ceramic samples. Results evidenced the influence of feldspars in kaolins and Fe2O3 in FA on the sintering temperatures and properties of mullite ceramics. The fully FA-based ceramic sintered at 1100 °C exhibited post-sintering properties of bulk density 2.1 g/cm3; compressive strength 77.5 MPa; and porosity, 2% in comparison with the FA/kaolin-based ceramics properties of bulk density 2.2 g/cm3; compressive strength, 60–65 MPa; and porosity from 9.3 to 16.4% influenced by Na,K-feldspars. The best structural and mechanical characteristics were found for the FAK3 sample, supported by the high content of kaolinite and orthoclase in the kaolin K3 additive. The FAK3 annealed at 1100 °C exhibited good compressive strength of 87.6 MPa at a porosity of 10.6% and density of 2.24 g/cm3 and annealed at 1300 °C the compressive strength of 41.3 MPa at a porosity of 19.2% and density of 1.93 g/cm3.

Abstract: This study was designed to examine the mineral, microstructural, and mechanical strength properties of fly ash and its feasibility as a raw material for geopolymer cement. The study used an experimental method by examining the characteristics of fly ash by X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (XRF), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), hydrometer method, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and compressive strength testing. For creating the geopolymer cement paste, a concentration of NaOH 10M was used, with a ratio of water/solid = 0.4 and a ratio of Na2SiO3/NaOH = 1 using curring at room temperature. The results showed the geopolymer pastes have a compressive strength of 18.1 MPa and 21.5 MPa after 7 days and 28 days. The XRD results showed a decrease in the peak of 2θ at 26.54° because the amorphous part had transformed into a C-S-H solution in geopolymer cement. This finding was supported by the FTIR spectra results showing Si-O-Si bending vibration and the functional group of AlO2. It showed that Nagan Raya fly ash-based geopolymer is a potential construction material.Abstrak: Penelitian ini dirancang untuk mendapatkan sifat mineral, mikrostruktural, dan kekuatan mekanis dari fly ash serta kesesuaiannya sebagai material dasar pada semen geopolimer. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode eksperimen dengan cara  menguji karakteristik dari fly ash dengan pengujian X-ray Fluorescense Spectrometer (XRF), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectoscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), hydrometer method, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) dan kuat tekan.  Untuk pembuatan pasta semen geopolimer digunakan konsentrasi NaOH 10 M, rasio water/solid 0,4 dan rasio Na2SiO3/NaOH = 1 dengan perawatan pada suhu kamar. Hasil menunjukkan setelah 7 hari pasta geopolimer memiliki kuat tekan 18,1 MPa dan 21,5 MPa pada 28 hari. Hasil XRD menunjukkan adanya penurunan puncak 2θ pada 26,54° ini disebabkan karena bagian amorf dari fly ash telah menjadi larutan C-S-H pada semen geopolimer. Hasil ini diperkuat dengan analisis FTIR spectra yang menunjukkan adanya Si-O-Si bending vibration dan gugus fungsi dari AlO2. Hasil menunjukkan fly ash dari Nagan Raya potensial sebagai bahan material konstruksi berbasis geopolimer.

Coal fly ash from coal power plants is a potential raw material for the production of alumina. An objective aluminothermic reduction method for the preparation of Al-Si master alloy and alumina from coal fly ash was investigated. The kinetic analysis using non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry indicated that the reduction of Al6Si2O13, Fe2O3, and TiO2 by aluminum in coal fly ash occurs at 1618 K, 1681 K, and 1754 K, respectively. Moreover, the influence of reaction temperature on product composition was studied. The phases and morphologies of the products obtained by the aluminothermic reduction of coal fly ash at 1373-1773 K were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy, respectively. The results from X-ray diffraction show that no oxide reduction has taken place at 1373 K and 1473K, the compositions of the product obtained by aluminothermic reduction of fly ash at 1573K- 1673 K are Al2O3, mullite, Al and Si, while the compositions of the product at 1773 K are Al2O3, Al, and Si. In addition, the chemical compositions of Al-Si alloy obtained at 1773 K are 86.81 wt% Al and 13.19 wt% Si.

The silica leached from coal fly ash using alkali, via the hydrothermal method, can be used as the raw material for the synthesis of xonotlite fibers through the hydrothermal synthesis method. This investigation was made to examine how the fly ash desilicated liquid influences the crystal growth and microstructure of xonotlite fibers. The obtained samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope techniques to investigate their mineralogical composition and morphological characteristics. The results indicated that the pure desilication liquid leached from coal fly ash could be used to prepare xonotlite fibers. Xonotlite fibers with single crystal characteristics and large aspect ratio of 100–400 were successfully fabricated from fly ash desilication liquid, which is used as the silica material, at 240°C for 6 h.

ABSTRACTThis paper focus on evaluating the ability to use Mexican fly ash (FA) and copper slag (CS) to produce alkali cements (0% OPC) or hybrid cements (20% OPC + 80% fly ash). The alkali activators used were two: 8 M NaOH solution for alkali cements and NaCl with sodium silicate for hybrid cement (HYC). Results of mechanical testing and characterization of the reaction products formed after 2 and 28 days are presented and discussed. Mechanical strength in some cases exceeded 20 MPa, at 2 days curing. The chemical characterization techniques used were X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
