The pathogenesis of fungal and bacterial microbes is a complex process involving distinct parameters, including virulence factors, nutrient sensing and availability, microbial signals, as well as host status and defense responses. Defining pathogenesis improves our understanding of how an organism causes diseases and provides insight into novel prospects to combat infection. The effects of pathogenic microbes have significant impact on diverse sectors, including health, agriculture, and economics, underscoring their immense importance in society. Articles in this Special Issue address unique aspects of microbial pathogenesis by exploring interactions between host and pathogen during infection, defining inflammatory immune responses, profiling the importance of essential microbial structures associated with virulence, and outlining critical considerations driving complex diseases.

The faunal assemblage from the early Maastrichtian portion of the Horseshoe Canyon Formation is described on the basis of four new vertebrate microfossil localities and remains from the Albertosaurus bonebed. All of the localities sampled were deposited during a cool, dry climate at a palaeolatitude of ∼58°N. Thus, these assemblages provide insight into a northern cool-climate assemblage in the early Maastrichtian of western North America. This fauna is characterized by the presence of taxa with more northern affinities, such as Holostean A, champsosaurs, Troodon , and toothed birds. Warm-climate taxa, such as crocodylians, large and diverse turtles, and albanerpetontids are notable in their absence. The Albertosaurus bonebed locality at the top of unit 4 of the Horseshoe Canyon Formation was deposited during the initial stages of a trend to a warmer and wetter climate that is represented in unit 5. The bonebed shares many taxa with the underlying vertebrate microfossil localities. However, a notable difference is the presence of Atrociraptor marshalli from the Albertosaurus bonebed but not the other localities in the upper Horseshoe Canyon Formation. The presence of Atrociraptor may be attributable to this change in climate rather than local ecological conditions. Also, the assemblages are different in the paucity of fish remains in the bonebed, and the relative rarity of shed hadrosaur teeth. The low abundance of aquatic taxa and rarity of shed teeth of hadrosaurs indicate that the locality is largely autochthonous, with little material being transported into the site.

A nation's economy is a complex nonlinear dynamical system with links to other national economies. Classical macroeconomic models typically incorporate linear approximations to the nonlinear world and add simple dynamics to capture adjustments over time. Most of these simplifications offer little insight into the nonlinear structure of economic relationships that exist. Nor do they provide useful predictions beyond the short-term predictions of the autoregressive linear models from which they are derived.

In a comment on the special issue of the European Journal of Personality on Factor V from the Five‐Factor Model, I argue that attempts to arrive at a definitive interpretation are premature in view of the limitations of the item pools that have been used, arbitrariness in choosing criteria for item selection, and limitations of sample sizes. At present, the best tentative interpretation of V is Creativity/Imagination. However, the relation of this concept to the domain of measured intelligence should be reconsidered. The joint study of temperament (Factors I and IV), character (II and HI), and intelligence factors should provide insight into the fascinating blends that arise between these dimensions. Such blends are captured by the Abridged Big‐Five Dimensional Circumplex approach to personality structure in a parsimonious manner.
