Apatite is the main source of phosphorous for the making of chemical fertilizers. While apatite is usually recovered from phosphate orebodies as the primary product of a mining exploitation, this paper documents the approach taken to produce a phosphate concentrate as a secondary product from the tailings of a niobium ore concentrator. The conventional desliming/flotation scheme used to process phosphate ores was tested and adapted to process one of the reject streams of a niobium concentrator in order to produce a salable phosphate concentrate. For that particular material, it was found that the reverse flotation of apatite yielded better results than the commonly used direct flotation of apatite. The recommended approach to produce the phosphate concentrate is desliming followed by reverse flotation of apatite and an acid leaching of the apatite concentrate to lower the MgO content below the specification for a phosphate concentrate. The obtained phosphate concentrate assays more than 32% P2O5 at a P2O5 recovery of 41%, which although low is found to be economic for the case of processing plant reject tailings.

A technology route of “Reverse flotation of acid-consuming gangue minerals–Acid leaching for copper–Extracting–Electrodepositing” is proposed for recovery copper from tailings with high content of calcium oxide and high content of combined copper oxide. The effect of the main factors involving regulator dosage, collector type and dosage was investigated. On this regard, a open-circuit flotation test scheme was proceeded, by which a concentrate was obtained with 3.84% of CaO grade, 71.57% of CaO recovery, 0.82% of Cu grade and 79.76% of Cu recovery. This concentrate can be directly used for the production of sulfuric acid leaching and preparation of electrolytic copper. This technology can be used to fully utilize Cu from tailings, which will help to extend raw material sourcing for Chinese Cu industry.

A phosphate rock containing MgO 7.95% and SiO29.64% has fine dissemination size, which is from Yichang city in Hubei province, China. Technical conditions of the ore were investigated by performing the desilication process of double reverse flotation, which adopted GE-609 to flotate silicon. The results showed that under defoamer DE-1 36g/t, phosphate concentrate with P2O531.91%, MgO 0.97%, SiO29.46% and recovery of 88.71% were obtained by employing the process of close-circuit reverse flotation.

Phosphate is a typical oxide ore characterizing that generating abundant froth during flotation. In this research a new flotation machine was employed in the flotation of phosphate. Comparing to regular flotation machine, in the reverse flotation of dolomite the recovery and grade of MgO has no significance improvement. While, in the case of reverse flotation of silicon dioxide, the new flotation machine has significance advantage. In 5 minutes of flotation time, the yield of froth is 20.66% with new machine, which equals to yield using regular machine under 8 minutes. The flotation time has been shorten by new machine. In addition, the recovery of silicon dioxide improved by 6% and the grade of silicon dioxide in phosphate concentrate decreased by 1.3% comparing the regular flotation machine. The results demonstrate that new flotation machine is more suitable and efficient for phosphate flotation

Technical conditions of the ore were investigated by performing reverse flotation, which adopted anion collector to flotate magnesium. The results showed that under H2SO43500g/t, H3PO42500g/t, MG-2 3200g/t, phosphate concentrate with P2O531.91%, MgO 0.97% and recovery of 88.71% were obtained by employing the process of close-circuit reverse flotation.

Phosphate ore is an important raw material for manufacturing fertilizers and phosphorous chemical products. While most of the phosphate resources cannot be directly treated as feed stock due to the low grade of P2O5 and high content of impurities. In order to obtain a qualified phosphate concentrate, the beneficiation of the low-grade phosphate ore is, hence, of great necessity. Many beneficiation techniques can be employed to upgrade the P2O5 grade of phosphate ores based on their characteristics in chemical composition and texture. The flotation process is most widely applied to balance the P2O5 recovery ratio and cost. In this review, the dominant techniques for the beneficiation of phosphate ores are introduced. Moreover, the factors that affect the flotation of phosphate ore, including the properties of mineralogy, flotation reagents (depressants and collectors) and flotation medium, were systematically analyzed.

On the basis of the contrastive research into the flotation performance of several vegetable oil fatty acids, the rapeseed oil fatty acid with better performance was screened out from many fatty acids, and its linolenic acid C18:3content is15.81%, then through modifying and compounding, new magnesium removal collector EM-LS-01was obtained. With the use of this agent in certain low-grade high-Mg phosphorite, the phosphate concentrate indexes of single reverse flotation are grade of 30.25% P2O5, recovery of 90.63% and content of 0.99% MgO.

According to the properties of a medium-and-low grade collophanite, a contrast testing study was conducted on the basis of three kinds of flotation process. The result suggests that it is difficult to obtain high-quality phosphate concentrate from removing carbonate minerals only by the use of reverse flotation process. In contrast, with the use of direct-reverse flotation process and double reverse flotation process, the separation of phosphorus minerals and gangue minerals in the ore can be realized effectively, as the result, the P2O5 grades of phosphorus concentrate are 32.29% and 31.26%, respectively. Considering the above factors, we recommend direct-reverse flotation process as the method to deal with the medium-and-low grade refractory collophanite.
