In this paper, a method of using the second phase to control the grain growth in Fe–Al–Cr alloys was proposed, in order to obtain better mechanical properties. In Fe–Al–Cr alloys, austenitic transformation occurs by adding austenitizing elements, leading to the formation of the second phase and segregation at the grain boundaries, which hinders grain growth. FeCr(σ) phase was obtained in the Fe–Al–Cr alloys, which had grains of several microns and was coherent and coplanar with the matrix (Fe2AlCr). The nucleation of σ phase in Fe–Al–Cr alloy was controlled by the ratio of nickel to chromium. When the Ni/Cr (eq) ratio of alloys was more than 0.19, σ phase could nucleate in Fe–Al–Cr alloy. The relationship between austenitizing and nucleation of FeCr(σ) phase was given by thermodynamic calculation.

Grain growth is a thermally activated process in which the average grain size increases as temperature and time increases. The driving force for grain growth results from the decrease in the free energy associated with the reduction in total grain boundary energy. There are several known factors that influence the migration of grain boundaries such as second phase particles precipitated in the matrix and the solute elements segregated at grain boundaries. The austenite grain boundaries are revealed using the thermal etching method. Carbon extraction replicas were prepared to determine the composition and size of precipitates present in the matrix. In this work, the evolution of the average prior austenite grain size (PAGS) of a low carbon steel microalloyed with niobium is studied as a function of temperature and heating rate. Austenite grains show a two-stage growth. It has been found that as heating rate increases, the grain coarsening temperature (TGC) increases and the grain size at that temperature decreases. TGC temperature lies around 40-60°C below the temperature for complete dissolution of carbonitrides (TDISS).

Dense, polycrystalline MgO was infiltrated with monticellite (CaMgSiO4) liquid to study the penetration of liquid along the grain boundaries of MgO. Grain growth was found to be restricted with increasing amounts of liquid. The inter-granular regions were generally found to be comprised of a two-phase mixture: crystalline monticellite and a glassy phase rich in the impurities present in the starting MgO material. MgO grains act as seeding agents for the crystallization of monticellite. The location and composition of the glassy phase with respect to the MgO grains emphasizes the role of intergranular liquid during the devitrification process in “snowplowing” impurities present in the matrix.

In the present research, the influences of different extrusion ratios (15, 30, 45, 60, and 75) and extrusion temperature (300°C, 330°C, 360°C, 390°C, 420°C) on the mechanical properties and microstructure changes of AZ80 magnesium alloy have been investigated through tensile test and via ZEISS digital metallographic microscope observation. Research indicates that the alloy’s plasticity gradually decreases as the temperature increases, and that the alloy’s tensile strength varies with the extrusion ratio. At 330°C, the alloy’s particle grain is small and a small amount of black hard and brittle second-phase β (Mg17Al12) are precipitated uniformly along the grain boundary causing the gradual increase of the alloy’s tensile strength. When the extrusion temperature is up to 390°C, the grain size increases significantly, but the second phase precipitation along grain boundaries transforms into continuous and uniform-distribution precipitation within the grain. In this case, when the extrusion ratio is 60, the alloy’s tensile strength reaches its peak 390 Mpa. As the extrusion temperature increases, inhomogeneous precipitation of the second-phase along grain boundaries increases, causing the decrease of the alloy’s strength. At the same temperature, both the tensile strength and plasticity increases firstly and then decreases as extrusion ratio increases. With the gradual increase of the refinement grain, the dispersed precipitates increase and the alloy’s tensile strength and plasticity reach their peaks when the extrusion temperature is 390°C. As the grain grows, the second phase becomes inhomogeneous distribution, and the alloy’s strength and plasticity gradually decrease.

Magnesium alloys attract attention as degradable implant materials due to their adjustable corrosion properties and biocompatibility. In the last few decades, especially wrought magnesium alloys with enhanced mechanical properties have been developed, with the main aim of increasing ductility and formability. Alloying and processing studies allowed demonstrating the relationship between the processing and the microstructure development for many new magnesium alloys. Based on this experience, magnesium alloy compositions need adjustment to elements improving mechanical properties while being suitable for biomaterial applications. In this work, magnesium alloys from two Mg-Zn series with Ce (ZE) or Ca (ZX) as additional elements and a series of alloys with Ag and Ca (QX) as alloying elements are suggested. The microstructure development was studied after the extrusion of round bars with varied processing parameters and was related to the mechanical properties and the degradation behavior of the alloys. Grain refinement and texture weakening mechanisms could be improved based on the alloy composition for enhancing the mechanical properties. Degradation rates largely depended on the nature of second phase particles rather than on the grain size, but remained suitable for biological applications. Furthermore, all alloy compositions exhibited promising cytocompatibility.

Cast irons were produced with variations in the quantity and shape of the free graphite inclusions and in the matrix structure to investigate the relationship between the shear, compressive and tensile mechanical properties. Differences were observed which may have a significant effect on design criteria for cast irons. For example, the ratio of shear to tensile strengths decreased from about 1·25 to 0·577 and the ratio of 0·1 per cent proof stress in compression to that in tension decreased from approximately 2 to 11 as the tensile strength (and ductility) were increased.

In situ orientation mapping using TEM and calorimetric measurements were carried out to investigate the annealing behavior of cold-rolled 6013 aluminum alloy. The recrystallization of the material can be considered to be a number of processes that correspond to two separate stored energy release peaks. In the temperature range of the peak 1, the deformation zones around the large second-phase particles acted as sites for particle-stimulated nucleation. In the matrix, at the same time, some elongation of grains occurred. The elongated matrix grains appeared because of the reduction of the dislocation density and the annihilation of some low-angle grain boundaries between chains of subgrains lying in layers parallel to the sheet plane. The matrix processes in this temperatures range can be considered forms of continuous recrystallization. The matrix high-angle grain boundaries started to migrate at the temperature range of the peak 2. They moved mostly in the direction normal to the sheet plane. Heating of the sample for an appropriate time at those temperatures resulted in the complete discontinuous recrystallization of the material. The recrystallized microstructure was dominated now by elongated grains, which were a few times thicker than those obtained by annealing at the temperatures of the peak 1.

Anti-H2S X70 pipeline steel was developed. The microstructure of X70 pipeline steel was studied by the analysis of OM, SEM and TEM. The precipitation behavior was discussed. The comprehensive mechanical properties, HIC and SCC performance were systematically studied. The results indicated that the microstructure of the experimental steel was mainly acicular ferrite and granular bainite. The second phase precipitates dispersedly distributed in the matrix. The experimental steel possessed excellent strength, plasticity, low temperature toughness and low yield ratio. And therefore, the X70 pipeline steel in the study is suitable for sour service with the high strength, excellent toughness and low HIC&SSC susceptibility.

Abstract HRB500E seismic steel bars are mainly used in high-rise buildings near the seismic zone. The influence of different niobium contents (0–0.023%) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of HRB500E seismic reinforcement was studied. Results showed that the grain size of ferrite was between 3.6 and 8.3 μm when only V was added. Meanwhile, as the niobium content increases, the ferrite particles are further refined. After adding niobium, the grain contribution increased by 9%. The addition of niobium significantly refined the grain size of HRB500E seismic reinforcement. The second-phase nano-elliptic precipitate is NbC. The precipitated phase is dispersed on the grain boundary and the matrix, and the dislocation density on the matrix promotes the precipitation of NbC particles along the dislocation line. The second-phase precipitation of niobium can form an effective pinning effect and then refine the pearlite spacing. The microhardness and the tensile strength also significantly improved. The yield strength increased from 509 to 570 MPa.

The corrosion fatigue short crack propagation (CFSCP) behavior of A7N01P-T4 Al alloy welded joints in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution has been investigated. The test results indicate that the CFSCP followed a cyclical type of growth. Microscopic study shows that almost all second-phase particles are distributed along the grain boundary areas. These particles were easily dissolved during the corrosion fatigue test, resulting in weak grain boundaries. Therefore, the fatigue short crack will grow along the winding grain boundaries. While the second-phase particles on the grain boundaries were the main factor to cause the intergranular crack. Transgranular cracking may occur to the coarse grains in the matrix, which indicate that grain size also has a strong influence on the CFSCP behavior of A7N01P-T4 Al alloy.
