A detailed chemical investigation of two South China Sea nudibranchs Phyllidiella pustulosa and Phyllidia coelestis, as well as their possible sponge-prey Acanthella cavernosa, led to the isolation of one new nitrogenous cadinane-type sesquiterpenoid xidaoisocyanate A (1), one new naturally occurring nitrogen-containing kalihinane-type diterpenoid bisformamidokalihinol A (16), along with 17 known nitrogenous terpenoids (2–15, 17–19). The structures of all the isolates were elucidated by detailed spectroscopic analysis and by the comparison of their spectroscopic data with those reported in the literature. In addition, the absolute stereochemistry of the previously reported axiriabiline A (5) was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. In a bioassay, the bisabolane-type sesquiterpenoids 8, 10, and 11 exhibited cytotoxicity against several human cancer cell lines.

From the South China sea gorgonian Subergorgia suberosa, two new steroids, (22E)-14α-hydroxy-cholesta-1,4,22-trien-3-one (1) and 3-(1′,2′-ethandiol)-cholest-3β,5α,6α, 11α-tetraol (2) were obtained, in addition to six known steroids. The structures of compounds 1 and 2 were determined by spectroscopic methods. Cytotoxicity of the six known steroids against human cancer cell lines A549, HONE1, and HeLa was evaluated by MTT methods, and their anti-larval activity was evaluated in settlement inhibition assays with laboratory-reared Balanus amphitrite and Bugular neritina larvae.

In the northern South China Sea, pockmarks are widely distributed on the seabed offshore on the southwestern Xisha Uplift. The mineralogy and geochemistry of the clay minerals and surface sediments from the pockmark field were identified using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis to trace the provenance, weathering, and sediment transportation system in the area. The clay minerals are primarily comprised of illite, smectite, kaolinite, and chlorite, showing a distribution of average weight percentages of 35%, 35%, 18%, and 13%, respectively. Based on the surrounding fluvial drainage basins and various transport mechanisms (current or monsoon), illite and chlorite primarily originate from rivers in Taiwan and the Mekong and Red Rivers. Kaolinite primarily originates from the Pearl River, and smectite derived from the Luzon arc system is primarily transported by surface currents with significant influence from the Kuroshio intrusion.

A detailed chemical investigation of the South China Sea soft corals Clavularia viridis and Lemnalia flava yielded four new halogenated laurane-type sesquiterpenoids, namely, isobromolaurenisol (1), clalaurenol A (2), ent-laurenisol (3), clalaurenol B (4), and the new aromadendrane-type sesquiterpenoid claaromadendrene (6), together with three known sesquiterpenoids (5, 7, and 8). Their structures were determined by extensive spectroscopic analysis and by comparison with the previously reported analogues. In a bioassay, compounds 1, 2 and 4 exhibited interesting inhibitory activities in vitro against PTP1B and NF-κB.
