Let Z(s)=(Z1(s),…,Zp(s))t be an isotropic second-order stationary multivariate spatial process. We measure the statistical association between the p random components of Z with the correlation coefficients and measure the spatial dependence with variograms. If two of the Z components are correlated, the spatial information provided by one of them can improve the information of the other. To capture this association, both within components of Z(s) and across s, we use a cross-variogram. Only two robust cross-variogram estimators have been proposed in the literature, both by Lark, and their sample distributions were not obtained. In this paper, we propose new robust cross-variogram estimators, following the location estimation method instead of the scale estimation one considered by Lark, thus extending the results obtained by García-Pérez to the multivariate case. We also obtain accurate approximations for their sample distributions using saddlepoint techniques and assuming a multivariate-scale contaminated normal model. The question of the independence of the transformed variables to avoid the usual dependence of spatial observations is also considered in the paper, linking it with the acceptance of linear variograms and cross-variograms.

Background: Effective 3D-localization in mobile underwater sensor networks is still an active research topic. Due to the sparse characteristic of underwater sensor networks, AUVs (Autonomous Underwater Vehicles) with precise positioning abilities will benefit cooperative localization. It has important significance to study accurate localization methods. Methods: In this paper, a cooperative and distributed 3D-localization algorithm for sparse underwater sensor networks is proposed. The proposed algorithm combines with the advantages of both recursive location estimation of reference nodes and the outstanding self-positioning ability of mobile AUV. Moreover, our design utilizes MMSE (Minimum Mean Squared Error) based recursive location estimation method in 2D horizontal plane projected from 3D region and then revises positions of un-localized sensor nodes through multiple measurements of Time of Arrival (ToA) with mobile AUVs. Results: Simulation results verify that the proposed cooperative 3D-localization scheme can improve performance in terms of localization coverage ratio, average localization error and localization confidence level. Conclusion: The research can improve localization accuracy and coverage ratio for whole underwater sensor networks.

The objective of this work was the investigation of cross - variance between soil moisture and apparent soil electrical conductivity (CEa), under different land uses in an alluvial valley of Pernambuco. The study was developed at the Advanced Research Unit of Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (UFRPE), located at  Brígida River Basin, municipality of Panamirim-PE. Soil samples were collected in a regular mesh of 20 x 10 m, for soil moisture by gravimetric method and, following a regular 10 x 10 m mesh, CEa measurements were performed using EM38® device. Cross-semivariograms were assessed and spatial dependence was verified by geostatistical procedures. It was verified in geostatistical procedures  low variation for soil moisture and intermediate variation for CEa. The use of geostatistics allowed identification of covariance between soil moisture and ECa, as well as spatial dependence for both variables, for agricultural areas. It was verified that soil moisture, even at levels close to residual, constitutes a relevant secondary component for increasing soil salinity maps precision, and hence to precision agriculture.   Keywords: geostatistics, semi-arid, precision agriculture     LOPES, I. O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar a variância cruzada entre a umidade do solo e a condutividade elétrica aparente do solo (CEa), sob diferentes usos do solo em um vale aluvial de Pernambuco. O estudo foi desenvolvido na Unidade de Pesquisa Avançada da Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (UFRPE), localizada na bacia do rio Brígida, município de Panamirim-PE. As amostras de solo foram coletadas em uma malha regular de 20 x 10 m, para a umidade do solo pelo método gravimétrico e, seguindo uma malha regular de 10 x 10 m, as medidas de CEa foram realizadas usando o dispositivo EM38®. Os semivariogramas cruzados foram avaliados e a dependência espacial foi verificada por procedimentos geoestatísticos. Verificou-se procedimentos geoestatísticos, uma baixa variação da umidade do solo e variação intermediária para CEa. O uso da geoestatística permitiu identificar a covariância entre a umidade do solo e o CEa, bem como a dependência espacial para ambas as variáveis, para as áreas agrícolas. Verificou-se que a umidade do solo, mesmo em níveis próximos ao residual, constitui um componente secundário relevante para o aumento da precisão do mapeamento da salinidade do solo e, consequentemente, para a agricultura de precisão.   Palavras-chave: geoestatística, semiárido, agricultura de precisão

The current study investigated a systematic bias in spatial memory in which people, following a perspective shift from encoding to recall, indicated the location of an object further to the direction of the shit. In Experiment 1, we documented this bias by asking participants to encode the position of an object in a virtual room and then indicate it from memory following a perspective shift induced by camera translation and rotation. In Experiment 2, we decoupled the influence of camera translations and camera rotations and examined also whether adding more information in the scene would reduce the bias. We also investigated the presence of age-related differences in the precision of object location estimates and the tendency to display the bias related to perspective shift. Overall, our results showed that camera translations led to greater systematic bias than camera rotations. Furthermore, the use of additional spatial information improved the precision with which object locations were estimated and reduced the bias associated with camera translation. Finally, we found that although older adults were as precise as younger participants when estimating object locations, they benefited less from additional spatial information and their responses were more biased in the direction of camera translations. We propose that accurate representation of camera translations requires more demanding mental computations than camera rotations, leading to greater uncertainty about the position of an object in memory. This uncertainty causes people to rely on an egocentric anchor thereby giving rise to the systematic bias in the direction of camera translation.
