In order to enhance the corrosion resistance of concrete to chloride salt, 5% NaCl solution was used to corrode ordinary concrete (OC) and rubber concrete (RC) with 5%, 10%, and 15% rubber content, respectively. By testing the compressive strength, mass, chloride ion concentration at different depths and relative dynamic elastic modulus, the erosion mechanism was analyzed by means of SEM scanning and EDS patterns, and the mechanical properties and deterioration degree of ordinary concrete (OC) and rubber concrete (RC) under the corrosion environment of chloride salt were studied. The results show that: the quality of rubber mixed into concrete increases first and then decreases, and rubber can increase the compressive strength of concrete, improve its internal structure. At the same time, the mechanical properties of concrete in the corrosion environment of chloride salt are improved to a certain extent, and the deterioration degree is reduced. Considering the comprehensive performance of OC and RC in the dry–wet alternation mechanism under chloride salt corrosion, the best content of rubber is 10%.

Considering large number production of the abandoned tyres and the question of the concrete with mixture of crumb rubber, the mainly task of this paper is to study the mechanical properties of different mixing ratio concrete with vary volume of crumb rubber. The results showed that the workability, apparent density, compressive strength, flexural strength and brittleness index decrease as the increase of crumb rubber. While the anti-crack performance and anti-fatigue performance can be improved. The wear-resistance properties are a little lower than common concrete.

Concrete durability is a key aspect for forecasting the expected life time of concrete structures. In this paper, the effect of compressive strength and durability of concrete containing metakaolin developed from a local natural material (Soorh of Thatta Distict of Sindh, Pakistan) is investigated. Soorh is calcined by an electric furnace at 8000C for 2 hours to produce metakaolin. One mix of ordinary concrete and five mixes of metakaolin concrete were prepared, where cement is replaced by developed metakaolin from 5% to 25% by weight, with 5% increment step. The concrete durability was tested for water penetration, carbonation depth and corrosion resistance. The obtained outcomes demonstrated that, 15% replacement level of local developed metakaolin presents considerable improvements in concrete properties. Moreover, a considerable linear relationship was established between compressive strength and concrete durability indicators like water penetration, carbonation depth and corrosion resistance.

This paper, from the point of view of improving compactness of density and crystal water content of radiation-proof concrete, using magnesite with high crystal water content as aggregate and alkaline potential water as mixing water, prepared ordinary density radiation-proof concrete and studied its mechanical properties, resistivity and pore structure. The results show that, compared to base ordinary concrete, the prepared concrete has better 28d compressive strength and resistivity, overall porosity decreases by 17%, and pore gradation at all ages improves significantly. It is indicated that the prepared magnesite aggregate radiation concrete has good density and durability, improves concrete radiation protection performance.

The mechanical properties of concrete with composition of scrapped rubber tyre crumb replacing part of the fine aggregates were investigated. The testing method of the mechanical properties was executed according to . Many groups of crumb rubber concrete specimens are manufactured in different kinds of size and amount of rubber chips. The powder rubber and crumb rubber were mixed into C35 plain concrete, by the volume rations of 0%, 20%, 40 %, 60%, 80% and 100% of the fine aggregates, to investigate the influence of size and amount of rubber chips on the mechanical properties. The results of test indicate: the cubic compression strength, the tensile splitting strength and the strength of rupture decreased with the increase of rubber admixture. But there are some remarkable properties which is difficult to attain on ordinary concrete, such as better cracking resistance, better deformation property, minor density and so on.

Due to many different characteristics such as irregular polygon particle with pointed edges, rough surface and larger content of stone powder, machine-made sand has ignorable effects on the properties of concrete. As the basis for the design of concrete structures, the relations among the basic mechanical properties of concrete such as compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength and elastic modulus should be clearly understood. This paper summarizes the test data from the published references, and discusses the relations among these properties by statistical analyses compared with those of ordinary concrete. The results show that the axial compressive strength and the tensile strength can be prospected by the same formulas of ordinary concrete specified in current Chinese design code, but the prospected tensile strength should multiply a reducing coefficient when the strength grade of concrete is lower than C30. The elastic modulus of concrete with machine-made sand is larger than that of ordinary concrete, which should be prospect by the formula in this paper. Meanwhile, the formula of flexural strength is suggested.

Abstract. The compressive strength and elastic modulus of early-age shotcrete have important influence on the safety of tunnel during construction period. In order to investigate the laws of the mechanical properties of early-age shotcrete, experiments on the compressive strength and elastic modulus of early-age shotcrete with two different mixes used frequently on construction sites were carried out. The results show that the compressive strength and elastic modulus of shotcrete develop fairly rapidly and especially the development of elastic modulus of shotcrete is faster than that of ordinary concrete. There is an exponential relationship between the compressive strength and time as well as the elastic modulus development and time. Simultaneously their formulas were derived. The research results of this paper are not only helpful to understand the laws of the mechanical properties of early-age shotcrete, but also provide some reference for the reliability analysis of tunnel under construction.

Recent studies indicate that biodegradable magnesium alloys and composites are attracting a great deal of attention in orthopedic applications. In this study, magnesium–hydroxyapatite (Mg–HAP) composites with different compositions and grain size were fabricated by a spark plasma sintering (SPS) method. Their mechanical properties and corrosion behavior in a pseudo-physiological environment were investigated by pH measurements and inductivity coupled plasma (ICP) elemental analysis after an immersion test using Hanks’ solution. The results clearly showed that the addition of HAP improved both the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The results also indicated that the finer grain size improved most of the properties that are needed in a material for an orthopedic implant. Furthermore, the authors reveal that there is a strong correlation between the compressive strength and the porosity. In order to achieve the same compressive strength as human bone using these fabrication conditions, it is revealed that the porosity should be lower than 1.9%.

The article discusses the results of examining the impact of aggressive solutions on specimens of mortars with a slag-ash binder. Bar specimens were exposed to unidirectional diffusion of sodium chloride and sodium sulphate for 90 days. Next, the specimens were subjected to flexural and compressive strength tests, ion content tests, XRD phase composition tests, and microstructural SEM-EDS tests. The test results indicated that aggressive solution action resulted in decreased flexural strength, however, it did not impact the compressive strength of mortars. A minor impact of chloride ions on the pH of the pore liquid was recorded, while the tests did not show any influence of sulphate ions. Furthermore, aggressive ion concentration decreased in deeper specimen slices. Specimen phase composition testing after chloride ion action indicated the presence of a small amount of Friedel’s salt, while regular sodium chloride crystals were identified in the microscopic image. The performance properties of mortars exposed to the action of aggressive solutions were maintained.

The influence of inclusion on pitting corrosion of X80 pipeline steel was investigated by using electrochemical test and atomic force microscope. The results indicated that corrosion potential of X80 pipeline steel sample with higher grade inclusion was lower, and decreased significantly with chloride ion concentration increasing. Inclusion was not conducive to corrosion resistance of X80 pipeline steel. The way of X80 pipeline steel pitting corrosion was that pit formed at the inclusion dissolution, and grew to pitting. There were less corrosion products near the pit hole, forming a cathode ring.
