With a higher theoretical specific capacity (1675 mAh g−1) and energy density (2600 Wh kg−1), the lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is considered as a promising candidate for a next-generation energy storage device. However, the shuttle effect of polysulfides as well as the large interfacial impedance between brittle solid electrolyte and electrodes lead to the capacity of the Li-S battery decaying rapidly, which limits the practical commercial applications of the Li-S battery. Herein, we reported a facile in situ ultraviolet (UV) curing method to prepare a flexible quasi-solid-state composite electrolyte (QSSCE) of poly(propylene glycol)-co-pentaerythritol triacrylate/Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 (PPG-co-PETA/LAGP). By combining the high Li-ion conductivity and mechanical strength of inorganic NASICON-structure LAGP and good flexibility of the crosslinked PPG-co-PETA with nanopore structure, the flexible QSSCE with 66.85 wt% LAGP exhibited high Li-ion conductivity of 5.95 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 25 °C, Li-ion transference number of 0.83 and wide electrochemical window of ~5.0 V (vs. Li/Li+). In addition, the application of QSSCE in the Li-S battery could suppress the shuttle effect of polysulfides effectively, thus the Li-S battery possessed the excellent electrochemical cyclic performance, showing the first-cycle discharge-specific capacity of 1508.1 mAh g−1, the capacity retention of 73.6% after 200 cycles with 0.25 C at 25 °C and good rate performance.

Solid electrolytes with high Li-ion conductivity and electrochemical stability are very important for developing high-performance all-solid-state batteries. In this work, Li2(BH4)(NH2) is nanoconfined in the mesoporous silica molecule sieve (SBA-15) using a melting–infiltration approach. This electrolyte exhibits excellent Li-ion conduction properties, achieving a Li-ion conductivity of 5.0 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 55 °C, an electrochemical stability window of 0 to 3.2 V and a Li-ion transference number of 0.97. In addition, this electrolyte can enable the stable cycling of Li|Li2(BH4)(NH2)@SBA-15|TiS2 cells, which exhibit a reversible specific capacity of 150 mAh g−1 with a Coulombic efficiency of 96% after 55 cycles.

Flexible and low-cost poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based electrolytes are promising for all-solid-state Li-metal batteries because of their compatibility with a metallic lithium anode. However, the low room-temperature Li-ion conductivity of PEO solid electrolytes and severe lithium-dendrite growth limit their application in high-energy Li-metal batteries. Here we prepared a PEO/perovskite Li3/8Sr7/16Ta3/4Zr1/4O3 composite electrolyte with a Li-ion conductivity of 5.4 × 10−5 and 3.5 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 25 and 45 °C, respectively; the strong interaction between the F− of TFSI− (bis-trifluoromethanesulfonimide) and the surface Ta5+ of the perovskite improves the Li-ion transport at the PEO/perovskite interface. A symmetric Li/composite electrolyte/Li cell shows an excellent cyclability at a high current density up to 0.6 mA cm−2. A solid electrolyte interphase layer formed in situ between the metallic lithium anode and the composite electrolyte suppresses lithium-dendrite formation and growth. All-solid-state Li|LiFePO4 and high-voltage Li|LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 batteries with the composite electrolyte have an impressive performance with high Coulombic efficiencies, small overpotentials, and good cycling stability.

Abstract Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have been considered to be one of the most promising energy storage devices in the next generation. However, the insulating properties of sulfur and the shuttle effect of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) seriously hinder the practical application of Li-S batteries. In this paper, a novel porous organic polymer (HUT3) was prepared based on the polycondensation between melamine and 1,4-phenylene diisocyanate. The micro morphology of HUT3 was improved by in-situ growth on different mass fractions of rGO (5%, 10%, 15%), and the obtained HUT3-rGO composites were employed as sulfur carriers in Li-S batteries with promoted the sulfur loading ratio and lithium ion mobility. Attributed to the synergistic effect of the chemisorption of polar groups and the physical constraints of HUT3 structure, HUT3-rGO/S electrodes exhibits excellent capacity and cyclability performance. For instance, HUT3-10rGO/S electrode exhibits a high initial specific capacity of 950 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C and retains a high capacity of 707 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 1 C. This work emphasizes the importance of the rational design of the chemical structure and opens up a simple way for the development of cathode materials suitable for high-performance Li-S batteries.

Lithium-sulfur batteries are very promising next-generation energy storage batteries due to their high theoretical specific capacity. However, the shuttle effect of lithium-sulfur batteries is one of the important bottlenecks that limits its rapid development. Herein, physical and chemical dual adsorption of lithium polysulfides are achieved by designing a novel framework structure consisting of MnO2, reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The framework-structure composite of MnO2/rGO/CNTs is prepared by a simple hydrothermal method. The framework exhibits a uniform and abundant mesoporous structure (concentrating in ~12 nm). MnO2 is an α phase structure and the α-MnO2 also has a significant effect on the adsorption of lithium polysulfides. The rGO and CNTs provide a good physical adsorption interaction and good electronic conductivity for the dissolved polysulfides. As a result, the MnO2/rGO/CNTs/S cathode delivered a high initial capacity of 1201 mAh g−1 at 0.2 C. The average capacities were 916 mAh g−1, 736 mAh g−1, and 547 mAh g−1 at the current densities of 0.5 C, 1 C, and 2 C, respectively. In addition, when tested at 0.5 C, the MnO2/rGO/CNTs/S exhibited a high initial capacity of 1010 mAh g−1 and achieved 780 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles, with a low capacity decay rate of 0.11% per cycle. This framework-structure composite provides a simple way to improve the electrochemical performance of Li-S batteries.
