Measurement of electrical conductivity of conductive thin film deposited on a conductive substrate is important and challenging. An effective conductivity model was constructed for a bilayer structure to extract thin film conductivity from the measured Q-factor of a quasi-optical resonator. As a demonstration, aluminium films with thickness of 100 nm were evaporated on four silicon wafers whose conductivity ranges from ~101 to ~105 S/m (thus, the proposed method can be verified for a substrate with a wide range of conductivity). Measurement results at ~180 GHz show that average conductivities are 1.66 × 107 S/m (which agrees well with direct current measurements) with 6% standard deviation. The proposed method provides a contactless conductivity evaluation method for conductive thin film deposited on conductive substrate which cannot be achieved by the existing microwave resonant method.

The effective conductivity constant of crude oil different moisture content is different, the paper presents a weak signal of µV level detection method in crude oil moisture detection outside pipeline with electromagnetic conductance method. The paper describes the measurement principles, system structure, working process and theoretical analysis exactly. Electromagnetic conductivity measurement method has important practical value for mastering the crude oil amount in wells and subsequent processing of crude oil. Utilizing the detection circuit for crude oil moisture measurement has advantages of high measurement accuracy, high measurement speed, intuitive display and easy operation, which has good measurement results.

Abstract We compared results for total bilirubin as measured on a coated thin film and by the Evelyn-Malloy and Jendrassik-Gróf methods. We examined serum samples from patients and studied the effects of protein, hemoglobin, and lipids on bilirubin measurement. Results from the thin-film assay compared favorably with those of the other methods. Total and within-day precision (CV), assessed over a one-year period, were better than 6% and 3%, respectively, at all concentrations. Analytical recovery was 99 +/- 3%. Samples from individuals having a wide range of liver diseases demonstrated, by linear regression, good correlation between the thin-film method and the two wet-chemistry methods (correlation coefficients of 0.990 and 0.994). We conclude that the thin-film method offers a valid alternative assay for total bilirubin.

AbstractPalladium nanowires have been electrodeposited into mesoporous silica thin film templates. Palladium continually grows and fills silica mesopores starting from a bottom conductive substrate, providing a ready and efficient route to fabricate a macroscopic palladium nanowire thin films for potentially use in fuel cells, electrodes, sensors, and other applications. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicate it is possible to create different nanowire morphology such as bundles and swirling mesostructure based on the template pore structure.

AbstractProcess-based integrated assessment models (IAMs) project long-term transformation pathways in energy and land-use systems under what-if assumptions. IAM evaluation is necessary to improve the models’ usefulness as scientific tools applicable in the complex and contested domain of climate change mitigation. We contribute the first comprehensive synthesis of process-based IAM evaluation research, drawing on a wide range of examples across six different evaluation methods including historical simulations, stylised facts, and model diagnostics. For each evaluation method, we identify progress and milestones to date, and draw out lessons learnt as well as challenges remaining. We find that each evaluation method has distinctive strengths, as well as constraints on its application. We use these insights to propose a systematic evaluation framework combining multiple methods to establish the appropriateness, interpretability, credibility, and relevance of process-based IAMs as useful scientific tools for informing climate policy. We also set out a programme of evaluation research to be mainstreamed both within and outside the IAM community.

Based on the traditional theory of transient plane source for thermal conductivity measurement, this paper designed and developed a new pattern of heating and temperature sensing probe, presented the study of transient heat conduction of half-infinite plane while being heated, established a modified mathematical model of transient plane source method, and achieved the measurement of thermal conductivity of automotive interior material sample by the data processing method of mathematical iteration and liner regression using the modified transient plane source probe. According to the data of experiments, the instrument which this paper designed has a high precision of 5% and a wide range of 0.003-1W/(mK).This paper provides a practicable way for heat capacity determination of automotive interior materials.

The effects of plasticity in thin copper layers on the interface fracture resistance in thin-film interconnect structures were explored using experiments and multiscale simulations. Particular attention was given to the relationship between the intrinsic work of adhesion, Go, and the measured macroscopic fracture energy, Gc. Specifically, the TaN/SiO2 interface fracture energy was measured in thin-film Cu/TaN/SiO2 structures in which the Cu layer was varied over a wide range of thickness. A continuum/FEM model with cohesive surface elements was employed to calculate the macroscopic fracture energy of the layered structure. Published yield properties together with a plastic flow model for the metal layers were used to predict the plasticity contribution to interface fracture resistance where the film thickness (0.25–2.5 μm) dominated deformation behavior. For thicker metal layers, a transition region was identified in which the plastic deformation and associated plastic energy contributions to Gc were no longer dominated by the film thickness. The effects of other salient interface parameters including peak cohesive stress and Go are explored.

DNA aptamers have the ability to bind to target molecules with high selectivity and therefore have a wide range of clinical applications. Herein, a graphene substrate functionalized with a DNA aptamer is used to sense immunoglobulin E. The graphene serves as the conductive substrate in this field-effect-transistor-like (FET-like) structure. A voltage probe in an electrolyte is used to sense the presence of IgE as a result of the changes in the charge distribution that occur when an IgE molecule binds to the IgE DNA-based aptamer. Because IgE is an antibody associated with allergic reactions and immune deficiency-related diseases, its detection is of utmost importance for biomedical applications.
