We studied the effect of Cu addition on the hardness of ultra-low carbon steels heat treated with different cooling rates using thermal simulation techniques. The microstructural evolution, Cu precipitation behaviors, variations of Vickers hardness and nano-hardness are comparatively studied for Cu-free and Cu-bearing steels. The microstructure transforms from ferritic structure to ferritic + bainitic structure as a function of cooling rate for the two steels. Interphase precipitation occurs in association with the formation of ferritic structure at slower cooling rates of 0.05 and 0.2 °C/s. Coarsening of Cu precipitates occurs at 0.05 °C/s, leading to lower precipitation strengthening. As the cooling rate increases to 0.2 °C/s, the interphase and dispersive precipitation strengthening effects are increased by 63.9 and 50.0 MPa, respectively. Cu precipitation is partially constrained at cooling rate of 5 °C/s, resulting in poor nano-hardness and Young’s Modulus. In comparison with Cu-free steel, the peak Vickers hardness, nano-hardness and Young’s Modulus are increased by 56 HV, 0.61 GPa and 55.5 GPa at a cooling rate of 0.2 °C/s, respectively. These values are apparently higher than those of Cu-free steel, indicating that Cu addition in steels can effectively strengthen the matrix.

In steel wire processing it is difficult to reach a homogenous structure throughout the cross-section of the wire particularly in greater diameters. One alternative for producing a homogenous structure is to find a cooling path with a wide transformation temperature range. Fully austenite steel wire rolled at high temperatures can be decomposed into ferritic-martensitic dual phase structure using relatively slow cooling rates. Test materials were low alloyed low carbon steels with variations in alloying elements. Gleeble-1500 thermomechanical simulator was utilised to study the effect of cooling rate on decomposition of austenite after deformation. The microstructures were studied with an optical microscope. In certain low alloyed steels slow cooling rates eliminate the bainite transformation and instead martensite is formed. The final microstructure depends mainly on the carbon content but also on the amount of other alloying elements and their effects on the austenite phase.

We investigated the dendrite structures and the as-cast textures of low-carbon steel strips cast at different cooling rates in order to relate the δ-ferrite dendrite structure with the ferrite phase texture. Observations revealed that the orientation intensity of the texture component {111}<uvw> was stronger than the texture component {001}<uv0> in the as-cast steel strips obtained at different solidification cooling rates. These two texture components show a roof-shaped variation with the gradual decrease of the solidification cooling rate, reaching a maximum intensity at a cooling rate of about 2.0 K/s. This suggests that the solidification rate strongly influences the as-cast texture of low-carbon steel strips through changing the δ-ferrite dendrite structure.

A grain is surrounded by grains with different crystal orientations in polycrystalline plain low-carbon steel. The grain is constrained by its adjacent grains in the tension process. The interaction of the grain with the adjacent grains was investigated within the elastic deformation region. The following results have been obtained: (1) the Young’s modulus of a grain without consideration of grain-to-grain interaction is denoted as the inherent Young’s modulus; when the inherent Young’s modulus of a grain is equal to the Young’s modulus of the bulk material, there is almost no interaction between the grain and its adjacent grains; when a grain has a great difference between its inherent Young’s modulus and the Young’s modulus of the bulk material, its grain-to-grain interactions increase significantly; (2) the grain-to-grain interaction is mainly caused by the difference in the inherent Young’s modulus between the grain and its adjacent grains; the misorientation angle between the grain and its adjacent grains has almost no effect on the grain-to-grain interaction.

The promising direction in improving the strength properties of low-carbon steels is the use of controlled rolling providing formation of structures with prevalence of a bainite component. Analysis of the references has shown that now there are no detailed researches which allow to approve what morphological type of bainite provides the most optimal properties. In this regard in the present work the influence of cooling rate on the structure, properties, and structuralphase transformations of low-carbon complex-alloyed pipe steel containing 0.062 % C; 1.80 % Mn; 0.12 % Mo; 0.032 % Cr, 0.90 % Ni and other elements (Al, Cu, V, Nb, Ti) was studied. The dilatometric method was used to construct the CCT diagram of the decay of supercooled austenite of low-carbon complex-alloyed pipe steel. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of microstructure was carried out and hardness after various speeds of cooling was determined. There were identified the cooling rates providing bainite structures and increase in the strength properties of steel with specified composition. At a cooling rate since 0.05 to 6 °C/s, along with ferrite, a globular bainite is formed in the microstructure, consisting of bainitic α-phase and “islands” of martensite-austenite component ranging in size from 1 – 6 μm. At a cooling rate of 6 °C/s, conversion to reed bainite is observed, along with the borders of which the carbides and residual austenite are located. At cooling rates of more than 16 °C/s, bainite becomes bag-rack. With an increase in cooling rate from 50 to 150 °C/s, the average width of the bainite α-phase rails decreases from 2.22 to 1.32 μm.

In order to provide important guidance for controlling and obtaining the optimal microstructures and mechanical properties of a welded joint, the continuous cooling transformation diagram of a new low-carbon Nb-microalloyed bainite E550 steel in a simulated coarse-grain heat-affected zone (CGHAZ) has been constructed by thermal dilatation method in this paper. The welding thermal simulation experiments were conducted on a Gleeble-3800 thermo-mechanical simulator. The corresponding microstructure was observed by a LEICA DM2700M. The Vickers hardness (HV) and the impact toughness at −40 °C were measured according to the ASTM E384 standard and the ASTM E2298 standard, respectively. The experimental results may indicate that the intermediate temperature phase transformation of the whole bainite can occur in a wide range of cooling rates of 2–20 °C/s. In the scope of cooling rates 2–20 °C/s, the microstructure of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) mainly consists of lath bainite and granular bainite. Moreover, the proportion of lath bainite increased and granular bainite decreased as the cooling rate increasing. There is a spot of lath martensite in the microstructure of HAZ when the cooling rate is above 20 °C/s. The Vickers hardness increases gradually with the increasing of the cooling rate, and the maximum hardness is 323 HV10. When the cooling time from 800 °C to 500 °C (t8/5) is 5–15 s, it presents excellent −40 °C impact toughness (273–286 J) of the CGHAZ beyond the base material (163 J).

AbstractIn this paper we report a method to determine tensile strengths and Young’s modulus of cubic biaxial textured metal tapes used as substrate materials for coated conductors (CC). Simplicity, rapidity and reproducibility of the procedure are important for the evaluation of continuous in-house productions. Our approach is based on the EN 10002-1 B tensile test method. A key role for satisfactory results is the sample preparation of 100–250 μm thick tapes, which will be described in detail. Copper (E-Cu57) can be successfully transformed to cubic biaxial textured substrates. Best results were achieved by annealing between 750°C and 850°C in reducing atmosphere. Best FWHM values for the ψ scan are 5.51° and for the ϕ scan are 4.5°. Pole figure analysis verified the sharp {001} texture of the tape. Vickers hardness measurements (HV 0.1) for the cold worked material yielded values of 135 and for the annealed tape, values of 37. The ultimate tensile yield strength Rm of the textured substrate is 150 MPa and thus significantly lower than that for the cold worked material (413 MPa). Cubic biaxial substrates could be manufactured from Isotan CuNi44 (WM49) bars. Best results were achieved by annealing at 1200°C in reducing atmosphere. Pole figure analysis verified the {001} texture with other low intensity texture components. Vickers hardness measurements (HV 0.1) for the cold worked material yielded values of 236 and for the annealed tape values of 92. The ultimate tensile yield strength R m of the textured substrate is 300 MPa and thus significantly lower than that for the cold worked material (723 MPa).

Increase of soaking time contributed to the effectiveness of case depth formation, hardness properties and carbon content of carburized steel. This paper investigates the effect of different soaking time (7-9 hours) using powder and paste compound to the carburized steel. Low carbon steels were carburized using powder and paste compound for 7, 8 and 9 hours at temperature 1000°C. The transformation of microstructure and formation carbon rich layer was observed under microscope. The microhardness profiles were analyzed to investigate the length of case depth produced after the carburizing process. The increment of carbon content was considered to find the correlation between types of carburizing compound with time. Results shows that the longer carburized steel was soaked, the higher potential in formation of carbon rich layer, case depth and carbon content, which led to better hardness properties for carburized low carbon steel. Longer soaking time, 9 hours has a higher dispersion of carbon up to 41%-51% compare to 8 hours and 7 hours. By using paste carburizing, it has more potential of carbon atom to merge the microstructure to transform into cementite (1.53 wt% C) compare to powder (0.97 wt% C), which increases the hardness of carburized steel (13% higher).

Experiments show that the cold working of low carbon steel work materials can improve their machinability by reducing cutting forces and improving surface finish and tool life. The somewhat paradoxical result of reducing cutting forces by cold working a material so that its hardness is increased is explained in this paper by using a machining theory which takes account of the flow stress properties of the work material and can thus allow for the effects of cold working.

The corrosion behaviors of Al-Si-Cr-Cu bearing low carbon steel and a reference steel Q235 were tested in a cyclic dry/wet environment containing 0.01mol/L NaHSO3 in laboratory. Rust layers were observed by optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and XRD. The electrochemical behaviors of the steels were studied on the polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results indicate that after 120h corrosion test, the annual corrosion rates of the designed steels reduce 42 % than Q235 at least. The corrosion products are generally iron oxyhydroxides and oxides such as FeOOH, γ-FeOOH, α-FeOOH, γ-Fe2O3, Fe3O4. The α-FeOOH possesses good stabilization mainly exits and can improve the corrosion resistance. There are the enrichments of Cu, Cr, Si and Al in the rust layer close to the matrix, which make the rust layer be more compact and protected. The corrosion currents of the two designed steels are lower than that of Q235, the corrosion potentials are higher than that of Q235 after Tafel fitting. The rust layer impedances of the designed steels are higher than that of Q235.
