A method for obtaining highly porous materials in the form of film, based on the butyric-acetic chitin co-polyesters, containing 90% of butyryl and 10% of acetyl groups, was developed. The highly porous films, with thickness up to 0.11 mm, were obtained by two methods: (a) pouring 5% BAC 90/10 solution in ethanol on the layer of solid salts (porophor agent) which after solidification was eluted with water; (b) application of the suspension of porophor agent in BAC 90/10 solution in the solvent mixture with density similar to bulk porophor agent. In the final stage, the materials were obtained with porosity up to 95–99% and tensile strength 5 cN, which can be used as an active layer of medical dressings. The optimised procedure was used in the production of porous medical dressings (Medisorb) on an industrial scale. In the industrial method, NaCl was used as a porophor agent in the solid form and as a 3% solution in polymer. The final materials were characterised by porosity and other functional parameters at the level recommended for medical dressings. Medisorb series materials do not show in vitro cytotoxic activity.

The safest way to store hydrogen is in solid form, physically entrapped in molecular form in highly porous materials, or chemically bound in atomic form in hydrides. Among the different families of these compounds, alkaline and alkaline earth metals alumino-hydrides (alanates) have been regarded as promising storing media and have been extensively studied since 1997, when Bogdanovic and Schwickardi reported that Ti-doped sodium alanate could be reversibly dehydrogenated under moderate conditions. In this review, the preparative methods; the crystal structure; the physico-chemical and hydrogen absorption-desorption properties of the alanates of Li, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Y, Eu, and Sr; and of some of the most interesting multi-cation alanates will be summarized and discussed. The most promising alanate-based reactive hydride composite (RHC) systems developed in the last few years will also be described and commented on concerning their hydrogen absorption and desorption performance.

In this present work, chitosan (CS) crosslink with polyaniline (PANI) with montmorilonite (MMT) called as (CSPANI/MMT) and CS crosslink with PANI without MMT called as (CS-PANI) were prepared by employing the solution casting method. Further the formation of nanocomposites CS-PANI/MMT and CS-PANI were investigated using XRD, FTIR, SEM and tensile strength. Water uptake and swelling ratio of the CS-PANI and CS-PANI/MMT were found to decrease with increase in concentration of clay. Mechanical properties of the CS-PANI and CS-PANI/MMT were assessed in terms of tensile strength and extensibility using texture analyzer. Increase in tensile strength and reduction in extensibility was reported with increase in the nanoclay content. In vitro drug release study on CS-PANI and CS-PANI/MMT indicated pronounced sustained release of doxorubicin by the incorporation of clay particles in the CS polymer matrix. Overall CSPANI/MMT nanocomposite films exhibited improved mechanical and sustained drug release properties than CS-PANI.

Biodiesel is a promising candidate for sustainable and renewable energy and extensive research is being conducted worldwide to optimize its production process. The employed catalyst is an important parameter in biodiesel production. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), which are a set of highly porous materials comprising coordinated bonds between metals and organic ligands, have recently been proposed as catalysts. MOFs exhibit high tunability, possess high crystallinity and surface area, and their order can vary from the atomic to the microscale level. However, their catalytic sites are confined inside their porous structure, limiting their accessibility for biodiesel production. Modification of MOF structure by immobilizing enzymes or ionic liquids (ILs) could be a solution to this challenge and can lead to better performance and provide catalytic systems with higher activities. This review compiles the recent advances in catalytic transesterification for biodiesel production using enzymes or ILs. The available literature clearly indicates that MOFs are the most suitable immobilization supports, leading to higher biodiesel production without affecting the catalytic activity while increasing the catalyst stability and reusability in several cycles.

More suitable and efficient methods to protect gametes from external harmful effects during in vitro handling can be achieved by adding preovulatory porcine oviductal fluid (pOF) to in vitro culture media. The objective of this study was to assess the swim-up procedure’s suitability as a sperm selection method using a medium supplemented with 1mg/mL BSA, 1% preovulatory pOF (v/v), 1% v/v pOF plus 1mg/mL BSA, and 5mg/mL BSA. After selection, various sperm parameters were studied, such as sperm recovery rate, sperm morphology, motility (by CASA), vitality, acrosome status and intracellular calcium (by flow cytometry) and ability to penetrate oocytes in vitro. Around 2% of sperm were recovered after swim-up, and the replacement of BSA by pOF showed a beneficial reduction of motility parameters calcium concentration, resulting in an increased penetration rate. The combination of albumin and oviductal fluid in the medium did not improve the sperm parameters results, whereas a high concentration of BSA increased sperm morphological abnormalities, motility, and acrosome damage, with a reduction of calcium concentration and penetration rate. In conclusion, the replacement of albumin by preovulatory oviductal fluid in the swim-up sperm preparation method modifies boar sperm parameters and improves the in vitro penetration of oocytes.

Objective: The aim of the current research is optimization, preparation and evaluation of starch tartrate (novel super disintegrant) and preparation of fast dissolving oral films of cetirizine dihydrochloride by employing starch tartrate. Methods: To check the drug excipient compatibility studies of the selected drug (Cetrizine dihydrochloride) and the prepared excipient i. e starch tartrate, different studies like FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy), DSC (Differential scanning calorimetry) and thin-layer chromatography (TLC) were carried out to find out whether there is any interaction between cetirizine dihydrochloride and starch tartrate. The solvent casting method was used for the preparation of fast dissolving films. The prepared films were then evaluated for thickness, folding endurance, content uniformity, tensile strength, percent elongation, in vitro disintegration time and in-vitro dissolution studies. Response surface plots and contour plots were also plotted to know the individual and combined effect of starch tartrate (A), croscarmellose sodium (B) and crospovidone (C) on disintegration time and drug dissolution efficiency in 10 min (dependent variables). Results: Films of all the formulations are of good quality, smooth and elegant by appearance. Drug content (100±5%), thickness (0.059 mm to 0.061 mm), the weight of films varies from 51.33 to 58.06 mg, folding endurance (52 to 67 times), tensile strength (10.25 to 12.08 N/mm2). Fast dissolving films were found to disintegrate between 34 to 69 sec. Percent dissolved in 5 min were found to be more in F1 formulation which confirms that starch tartrate was effective at 1%. Conclusion: From the research conducted, it was proved that starch tartrate can be used in the formulation of fast dissolving films of cetirizine dihydrochloride. The disintegration time of the films was increased with increase in concentration of super disintegrant.

The objective of this study was to investigate sericin-polyurethane nanofiber cover (SUC) for wound dressing materials in a rat skin. Sericin-polyurethane blended nanofibers were fabricated by using electrospinning. The composition of 3%w/v polyurethane in ethanol and 19% w/v sericin were blended and electrospun at 15 kV, 20 cm from tip to collector with a feed rate of 6.2 ml/hr. The mats, approximately 1.5 mm thick, were sterile by gamma irradiation with a radiation dose of 15 kGy. The samples of in vitro and in vivo testing were separated into three groups; gauze, polyurethane nanofiber cover (UC), and SUC. In vitro cultured L929 cell lines were investigated with inverted microscope. It was found that cells migrated to SCU. For in vivo tests, the remaining wound in rats was measured on day 2-14 after excision. Compared to original size of wound samples, the size of the wound remained 24% for SUC, 33% for gauze, and 34% for UC at day 8. The sericin, an active agent, contained in SUC mats was about 5 µl at 1.5 ×1.5 cm. It can be concluded that sericin is non-toxic to cells and can promote wound healing process in rats.

The objective of this investigation is to study the applicability of gum karaya, the natural gum for the preparation and in vitro evaluation of losartan potassium, as Chronotherapeutic Drug Delivery System (ChDDS). The compression-coated timed-release tablets (CCT) containing losartan potassium in the core tablet were prepared by dry coating technique with different ratios of gum karaya as the outer coat. The parameters investigated were tensile strength, friability, in vitro dissolution studies and drug concentration. The optimized formulation was further characterized by powder XRD and FTIR to investigate interactions and no interactions observed. The tensile strength and friability of all the CCT were between 1.06-1.23 MN/m2 and < 0.3% respectively.  All the CCT showed a clear lag time before a burst release of drug. However, the lag time of drug release increased as the amount of gum karaya in the outer layer increased. For instance, the lag time of LGK1, LGK2, LGK3, LGK4, LGK5, LGK6 and LGK7 were 16, 10.5, 5.5, 3, 2, 1.5 and 0.5 hrs respectively.  The drug content of all the CCT was >98%. Formulation LGK3 was taken as an optimized formulation which can be exploited to achieve ChDDS of losartan potassium for the treatment of hypertension.
