Current prognostic classification of rhabdomyosarcoma in children requires precise measurements of the tumor. The purpose of the study was to compare the standard three-dimensional (3D) measurements with semi-automatic tumor volume measurement method concerning assessment of the primary tumor size and the degree of response to treatment for rhabdomyosarcoma in children. Magnetic Resonance Imaging data on 31 children with treated rhabdomyosarcoma based on the Cooperative Weichteilsarkom Studiengruppe (CWS) guidance was evaluated. Tumor sizes were measured by two methods: 3D standard measurements and semi-automatic tumor volume measurement (VOI) at diagnosis, and after 9 and 17/18 weeks of the induction chemotherapy. Response to treatment and prediction values were assessed. The tumor volume medians calculated using VOI were significantly higher in comparison with those calculated using the 3D method both during the diagnosis as well as after 9 weeks of the chemotherapy and during the 17–18th week of the treatment. The volume measurements based on the generalized estimating equations on the VOI method were significantly better than the 3D method (p = 0.037). The volumetric measurements alone can hardly be considered an unequivocal marker used to make decisions on modification of the therapy in patients with rhabdomyosarcoma.

BACKGROUND: In a previous study undertaken to quantify capsular volume in rotator cuff interval or axillary pouch, significant differences were found between controls and patients with instability. However, the results obtained were derived from two-dimensional cross sectional areas. In our study, we sought correlation between three-dimensional (3D) capsular volumes, as measured by magnetic resonance arthrography (MRA), and multidirectional instability (MDI) of the shoulder.METHODS: The MRAs of 21 patients with MDI of the shoulder and 16 control cases with no instability were retrospectively reviewed. Capsular areas determined by MRA were translated into 3D volumes using 3D software Mimics ver. 16 (Materilise, Leuven, Belgium), and glenoid surface area was measured in axial and coronal MRA views. Then, the ratio between capsular volume and glenoid surface area was calculated, and evaluated with control group.RESULTS: The ratio between 3D capsular volume and glenoid surface area was significantly increased in the MDI group (3.59 ± 0.83 cm³/cm²) compared to the control group (2.53 ± 0.62 cm³/cm²) (p < 0.01).CONCLUSIONS: From these results, we could support that capsular volume enlargement play an important role in MDI of the shoulder using volume measurement.

Introduction: New radiological tools can accurately provide preoperative three-dimensional spatial assessment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) We aimed to determine whether the distribution, volume, shape, and fraction of RCC resected in a cytoreductive nephrectomy associates with survival. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 560 patients undergoing cytoreductive nephrectomy performing a comprehensive volumetric analysis in eligible patients of all detectable primary and metastatic RCC prior to surgery. We used Cox regression analysis to determine the association between the volume, shape, fraction resected, and distribution of RCC and overall survival (OS). Results: There were 62 patients eligible for volumetric analysis, with similar baseline characteristics to the entire cohort, and median survivor followup was 34 months. Larger primary tumors were less spherical, but not associated with different metastatic patterns. Increased primary tumor volume and tumor size, but not the fraction of tumor resected, were associated with inferior survival. The rank of tumors based on unidimensional size did not completely correspond to the rank by primary tumor volume, however, both measurements yielded similar concordance for predicted OS. Larger tumor volume was not associated with a longer postoperative time off treatment. Conclusions: Primary tumor volume was significant for predicting OS, while the fraction of disease resected did not appear to impact upon patient outcomes. Although rich in detail, our study is potentially limited by selection bias. Future temporal studies may help elucidate whether the primary tumor shape is associated with tumor growth kinetics.
